Goal
Close off your opponent's ability to place game blocks (see Figure 1).
Setup
Place the playing field on the table. Take the 8 blocks of one color and give the 8 blocks of the other color to your opponent.
Playing the Game
Decide who starts the game. The first player places any one of his blocks on the playing field (see Figure 2). Then the players take turns placing a block on the field, on top of the blocks already placed. The game continues until one of the players loses the ability to place his blocks within the 4×4×4 cube.
A block is within the cube if none of its parts:
- extends beyond the boundaries of the playing field;
- is higher than four cubes above the level of the field.
Important: a player may not change the position of blocks already placed in order to squeeze a new block in (see Figure 3).
Cube Boundary Diagram
A diagram of the boundary cube is shown in the top-right corner of the sheet. Its three visible edges are labeled "4 cubes" each, forming a 4×4×4 cube above the playing field. If part of a block does not fit within the boundaries of the 4×4×4 cube, that block cannot be placed.
Figure 1
Part of the white block sticks out beyond the boundaries of the cube, so it cannot be placed.
Figure 2
Examples of the first move. Place any block as you like, as long as it does not go beyond the boundaries of the 4×4×4 cube.
Figure 3
You may wedge a block under a pile of blocks that has grown on the field. You may not lift or slide blocks in order to make your block fit within the boundaries of the 4×4×4 cube.
Victory
The player who closes off his opponent's ability to place the remaining blocks within the 4×4×4 cube becomes the winner.
Bonus Puzzle
The sheet also offers a puzzle: try to arrange the blocks so that they form a cube with one of the patterns shown (three example patterns are illustrated on the sheet).
