Components

  • 1 game board
  • 40 animal tiles
  • 5 special tiles
  • 3 blank tiles
  • 4 pawns

Setup

A. Place the board in the middle of the table. It shows the jungle at night (40 spaces on which the animal tiles will be placed). A track of points runs around the board and is interrupted in 3 places by lianas.

B. Each player takes 1 pawn and places it next to the starting space (the one with a dragonfly on a leaf). Return the remaining pawns to the box.

C. Shuffle all the animal tiles and special tiles face down, then place them below the board, face down.

Before the first game, return the blank tiles to the box. Before later games, you may prepare your own special tiles: draw on the blank tiles the actions you have invented, then add them to the other tiles before a new game.

Key: A = board, B = starting space, track of points, lianas; C = tiles.

Goal of the Game

The Amazon jungle, wrapped in darkness, wakes up to life. The sun's rays reach higher and higher, revealing more and more of the jungle's inhabitants.

During the game you place animal tiles on the board, from the bottom up. When the sun lights up a whole animal, that is, when a player has built a complete picture of an animal, they score points for it. The more tiles an animal is made of, the more points the player receives for it.

The player who has scored the most points at the end of the game wins.

The illustrations in the rulebook show example animals worth 1, 2, 3 and 4 points.

Rules for Placing Tiles on the Board

Before reading further, learn the basic rule for placing tiles on the board: from the bottom up.

A. At the start of the game, a tile that fits the lowest part of the jungle may be placed on the board. For example, the one with a piece of snail.

B. Later in the game, tiles may also be placed directly on top of tiles already on the board.

Key: A = lowest row; B = on top of tiles already placed.

Gameplay

The player who was most recently in a forest (or the youngest player) starts. Then the other players take their turns in clockwise order.

On your turn, flip over 1 tile and show it to all players:

  • If you flipped an animal tile that you can place on the board, place it. Then flip over another tile.
  • If you flipped an animal tile that you cannot place on the board, put it above the board, face down. Your turn ends.
  • If you flipped a special tile, carry out the action shown on it (if you are able to) and put it above the board, face down. The special tiles are described later in the rulebook.

Other rules:

  • On your turn you may flip over not only tiles lying below the board but also tiles lying above it. Try to remember what is on the tiles placed above the board.
  • Remember that a flipped tile, whether it lay below the board or above it, must go either:
    • onto the board (if it can be placed there), or
    • above the board (if it cannot be placed on the board, or if it is a special tile). A flipped tile is never put below the board.
  • If you flipped an animal tile above the board that cannot be placed on the board, you must put it back in the same place.
  • If you flipped a special tile above the board, you must put it in a different place (but still above the board).

Summary of the rules:

  1. If you flip a tile lying below the board, you must place it on the board (if it can be placed there) or put it above the board.
  2. The marker (icon not reproduced) shows the places where animal tiles can be placed.
  3. If you flip a tile lying above the board, you must place it on the board (if it can be placed there) or put it above the board:
    • an animal tile in the same place,
    • a special tile in a different place.

Completed Animals

After placing a tile that completes an entire animal, the player moves their pawn forward by as many spaces as there are tiles in that animal. The player's turn then ends.

Moving Pawns

When a pawn stops on a space where another pawn (or several pawns) already is, it jumps on top of them.

When you move a pawn that has other pawns on top of it, you move all of them together.

Lianas knock off all pawns that are being moved on top of another pawn! Knocked-off pawns stop in front of the liana. The pawn at the bottom continues its movement.

Special Tiles

Spider web (Pajęczyna) "Ugh! Time for a break. Your turn ends." Turn the Spider web tile face down and put it in a different place (above the board).

Jump (Skok) "Hop! If your pawn is last on the track of points (and has no other pawns on top of it), jump with it onto the nearest pawn in front of it! Your turn ends." Turn the Jump tile face down and put it in a different place (above the board).

Four-leaf clover (Czterolistna koniczyna) "You are lucky! Flip over another tile and continue your turn." Turn the Four-leaf clover tile face down and put it in a different place (above the board).

Slippery! (Poślizg!) "Watch out, it's slippery! Move your pawn back 1 space on the track of points (together with any other pawns on it). Your turn ends." Turn the Slippery! tile face down and put it in a different place (above the board).

End of the Game

The game ends when the whole board is filled with tiles. The player who has scored the most points wins (their pawn is furthest along the track of points). In the event of a tie, the players share the victory.

Shorter Variant (recommended for younger players)

To shorten the game and make it easier, before the game starts you may introduce one or more of the following changes:

A. Place on the board all the tiles in the leftmost column.

B. Place all the animals made of 1 tile on the board.

C. Remove some or all of the special tiles from the game.

More Jumpy Variant

In this variant the Jump special tile works differently. When you flip it, your pawn jumps onto the pawn in front of it. You do not need to be in last place on the track of points to make a jump.
