Preparation
Spread the game board out in the center of the table. Place the lucky charm on the compass and the airplane on its starting point. Each player receives a ranking counter and places it on the first square of the gold counting strip. Extra ranking counters are not needed and are returned to the game box. Get the die rods ready.
Diagram labels: compass, canister, starting point, gold counting strip, lines of latitude.
Please have a close look at the game board before starting to play. You will see a lot of small islands scattered in the sea between the airplane's starting point and the volcano island. There are different numbers of coins shown on each island. The closer an island lies to Habanabi, the more gold coins you can collect. The colored arrows between the islands represent the air routes you have to roll with the die in order to fly further on.
How to Play
Play in a clockwise direction. The player who has most recently been travelling by airplane starts and rolls the four die rods.
On the rods appear:
- At least one color of an air route leading to one of the adjacent islands. Great! Take the airplane and take the route indicated by the arrow to reach the next island. If, according to the colors on the rods, you can choose between various different routes, you decide which one to take. As you reach an island you have to decide if you want to stop or prefer to fly further on.
- Stopping the flight: Count the gold coins on the island you reached and move your ranking counter the corresponding number of squares on the gold counting strip. Hint for pilots: You can also refer to the numbers printed on the right-hand side of the game board to know the number of gold coins. The number between the fine white lines (lines of latitude) corresponds to the number of gold coins that can be collected on the island of this latitude.
- Continuing to fly: Roll the die rods again and try to reach one of the now adjacent islands. Hint for pilots: If you landed on an island showing a canister, you are short of fuel and have to fill up! Place one of the die rods on the canister. If you carry on rolling, you will have one less rod at your disposal.
- No color that matches an air route leading to one of the adjacent islands. Oh dear! You've crash-landed! Your turn is immediately over. You don't receive any gold and also cannot move your ranking counter.
In both cases, either stopping flying or crash-landing, you have to place the airplane back on its starting point. Then it's the turn of the next player.
The Lucky Charm
If you roll four matching colors or four different colors in one throw, you receive the lucky charm. You also receive it if you reach the volcano island.
Take it off the game board and place it in front of you. If the lucky charm is with another player, you receive it from this player.
How to employ the lucky charm: When you crash-land, you can roll the rods once again. After that, you have to return the lucky charm to the compass.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as a player has moved his ranking counter on or past the last square of the gold counting strip and wins the game as best co-pilot.
