Get Ready!
- Shuffle all the cards and deal five facedown to each player. You can look at your hand of cards but don't show other players.
- Place the remaining cards facedown in a draw pile. Leave room for a discard pile.
- Place the five pig figures in the center of the table.
Let's Play!
The game is played one turn at a time. The youngest player goes first.
On Your Turn
On your turn, do the following four steps in this order:
- Play cards!
- Steal pigs!
- Draw cards!
- Score points!
Your turn ends. Then, play moves to the left and the next player completes these steps, and so on.
1. Play Cards!
You can play one type of food card from your hand onto the table, plus any goat cards you have.
Food
- Pick one type of food card to play per turn. You must place all the cards of that type from your hand onto the table.
- Place those food cards in a stack faceup in front of you (or, if you have a stack of that food from a previous turn, add your new cards to it).
- The size of each food stack is determined by the total amount of food shown at the top of those cards. More food makes a bigger stack!
Example: You put down all of your donut cards = 5 donuts.
Goats
- Pick one food card from another player's stack. Discard that card and your goat card.
- You may play as many goat cards as you want during this "Play Cards" step of your turn, before or after you play food cards.
(See Goat Card FAQs.)
2. Steal Pigs!
If you have the biggest stack of any food type, take the matching pig and place it on your stack of cards.
- If you steal a pig from another player, they must discard their stack of matching food cards from the table.
- If there's a tie, you can't steal the pig.
Example: You have the biggest donut stack and take the blue pig.
You may not be able to steal a pig on every turn — that's ok! If you don't have enough food in your hand to take any pigs, you can still put cards down and add to those stacks on later turns.
3. Draw Cards!
Draw cards from the deck until you have five in your hand.
Example: You pick up one new donut card.
4. Score Points!
You can only score points if you have any pigs. If you don't, skip this step. Your turn now ends.
If you have any pigs in front of you, look at the cards you just drew. If any of those cards match any of your pigs, you have scored!
- Show everyone these cards, then place them facedown in front of you in a separate points pile.
- Each card is worth 1 point.
Example: You have the donut pig, so you score the donut card for 1 point.
Once you score a point it's yours for the rest of the game. Goats cannot discard point cards.
It's ok if you end your turn with fewer than five cards in your hand.
Your turn ends. Play moves to the left.
What do I do if I end my turn with no cards in my hand?
On your next turn, skip to step 3. Draw five new cards and score any cards you can as points. Do not place any food cards or use any goat cards.
The End of the Game
The game ends when any player scores 8 points. That player is the winner!
Goat Card FAQs
When I use a goat card, do I get to keep the other player's food card?
No, you must discard it and your goat card.
What cards can I discard with a goat?
Food cards from other players' faceup stacks. Goats cannot discard point cards.
Can I choose which of a player's cards to discard with my goat?
Yes!
When can I use a goat card?
Only during step one of your turn. (See Play Cards!)
Can I use multiple goats on one turn?
Yes! And you can use them on different kinds of food and on different players. This may help you steal multiple pigs in one turn!
If someone steals my pig using a goat, do I still have to discard all of my cards?
Yes — you always discard your cards if your pig is stolen.
What happens to my pig if someone uses a goat on my stack?
Do you still have cards in that stack?
- Yes — Do you still have the most of that food?
- Yes — You keep the pig.
- No — There's a tie!
- No — Does another player have a stack with the most of that food?
- Yes — They steal the pig! They get to add any matching cards from their hand to their stack (this doesn't count as playing food cards on your turn!)
- No — There's a tie! The pig returns to the middle.
Example First Turns
- On his first turn, Jack puts down two taco cards.
- Jack automatically has the most tacos on the table and steals the yellow pig.
- Jack draws back up to five.
- He has the yellow pig and picked up one taco card, so he scores one point. He places the card facedown.
Now it's Natalie's turn.
- Natalie puts down one ice cream card.
- Natalie automatically has the most ice cream on the table and steals the pink pig.
- She draws back up to five.
- Natalie has the pink pig but didn't pick up any ice cream cards, so she doesn't score any points this turn.
