Types of Cards

There are 5 types of cards in this game.

Captain

Each player chooses a Captain to be. All Captains currently have the same statistics. Captains are protected, as in they can never be stolen from a player or removed from the game. Your Captain has two statistics. Charisma in the bottom left and Strength in the bottom right. Charisma is the Captain's ability to lure Crew Members away from another Captain. Strength is how many strength points your Captain contributes to the total number of strength points needed to loot a pie.

Crew

Your Crew is comprised of crew members (CM for short). The CM have two statistics. Loyalty, in the bottom left and Strength in the bottom right. Loyalty is how well the CM sticks with their Captain. Strength is how many strength points your CM will contribute to the total number of points needed to loot a pie.

Charisma

These cards add charisma points to your Captain making them more charming and making it easier for him to lure CM away from an opposing Captain's crew. Charisma cards are offensive cards only. They may not be used to "block" another Captain from luring away one of your CM.

Action/Item

These cards allow a Captain to perform additional tasks during a turn, such as kidnapping a CM from another Captain, or sometimes blocking an action. For example, a Mirror card blocks a Charm card. ...more on that later.

Pie

These are the cards your Captain and crew are competing for. The pies have two statistics. Weight in the bottom left. In order to loot this pie the Captain and the entire crew must have a combined total strength equal to or greater than the weight. Points are in the bottom right. This is how many points you get for successfully looting the pie.

The Set-up

  1. Take all the Pie cards and shuffle them together. Deal 10 Pie cards face down. This is the draw pile for the Pie. Place the unused Pie cards to the side but don't look at them. These will not be used during game play. You can vary the length of the game by the number of pies you choose to have in your pie draw pile but the standard set up is 10 pies.

  2. Each player should select a Captain from the Captain cards. Place any unused Captains aside. They will not be used during game play.

  3. Shuffle all the Crew, Charisma, and Action/Item cards together. These are all the cards that say "Pie Rats of the Carob Bean Farm" on the backs. Deal a hand of 3 cards to each player. You may look at this hand of cards. The rest of these card are placed face down to form the draw pile. The discard pile will be next to the draw pile. All cards are discarded face up.

  4. Decide how you will play during Phase 6 looting a pie. Refer to page 12 for details.

Who Goes First?

If you can't decide who should go first then it is the person that most recently ate pie. If it is a tie then it's who ate the most pie. If it's still a tie then it's the person that helped the most to clean up the table. The player should take the Lead Player card and place it in front of them on the table.

Do not hide tabled cards (cards in play) at any time during the game. If another player asks to see your tabled cards you must show them.

Playing a Round

Each round is divided into 6 phases. The player with the Lead Player card goes first in phases 2-6. Play follows in a clockwise direction from the Lead Player.

Phase 1 - Reveal a Pie

Reveal a Pie card. Draw a card from the Pie deck and place it face up on the table. This is the card all the Captains are trying to loot. It is possible that Pies from previous turns are still "on the window sill" so that there are multiple Pies for the Captains to loot.

Phase 2 - Add Charisma

Place your Charisma cards next to your Captain. If you have a Charisma card in your hand and you do not play it during this phase then you will not get a chance to play it to the table until the next turn. You can only use Charisma cards you table in phase 2. You may not play Charisma cards out of phase.

Note: Players may save their cards for the next turn. They do not have to table playable cards. If for some reason you would like to save cards in your hand rather than have your opponents know what you have, you are very welcome to do so. Just remember, if you keep cards in your hand now, you will draw fewer cards later. In phase 6 you can draw up to a hand of 3 cards. If you have held 1 card back during a phase then you will only get to draw 2 cards later.

Phase 3 - Add Crew Members

You may now place Crew cards under your Captain. Again, you don't have to place all your crew on the table but any Crew left in your hand can not be used to loot a pie.

Phase 4 - Make Your Declaration (Protect or Lure)

In this phase you simply make a choice. You may choose to protect one of your CM by turning it sideways or declare that you are going to lure away a CM from another Captain. You cannot protect a CM and lure away a CM on the same turn. It's simply one or the other. (Unless you have a special card that says differently.) In this phase no cards are placed on the table and no Rats are lured away from other Captain's Crew.

If you protect a CM another player cannot lure it away from you. You may want to consider using this option if your CM has a high strength and a low loyalty.

In turning their CM sideways the Captain has protected it from being lured away to another Captain's crew. But they will not be able to lure a CM to their crew from another Captain in phase 5 because they can only perform one of the two options.

Phase 5 - Lure Crew Members to Your Crew

In this phase, Captains that did not choose to protect a CM in phase 4 attempt to lure CM away from another Captains' Crew. In order to do this there are two numbers you need to know. The first number is your Captain's total charisma points. This number is calculated by adding the Charisma from the Captain card (bottom left on the Captain card) to all the Charisma cards placed next to the Captain. In the example the Captain would have a total of 4 charisma points to use towards luring a CM away from another Captain's crew. (3 points for the Captain card +1 for the Hooked Hand.)

The second number you are going to need to know is the Loyalty value of the rat you are luring. Calculate the loyalty by adding the Captains Charisma to the Loyalty of the CM (bottom left on the Crew card). In the example the first CM would have a loyalty of 2 (3 for the Captain's Chrisma -1 for the CM's loyalty) and the second CM would have a loyalty of 4 (3+1).

To lure a CM away from another Captain you need at least 1 more charisma point than the total loyalty of the CM you are trying to lure. A Captain can only lure away 1 CM from 1 other Captain per turn. (The only exception to this is if you have cards, such as the Charm card, that specifically states you can lure away additional CM.) Discard any Charisma cards used after luring a CM from another captain.

Note: Charisma points can only be used offensively to lure CM to your Crew. They cannot be used defensively to stop someone from luring a CM away from you.

Using the illustrations, let's say that Captain Red Hook, with his Hooked Hand, wants to lure a CM away from Captain Petronella. Because Captain Petronella's first CM results with a loyalty of only 2, Captain Red Hook could lure that CM away and keep his Hooked Hand for a future turn. This is possible because Captain Red Hook has 3 Charisma on his own, without using his Hooked Hand.

The loyalty of Captain Petronella's second CM is 4. Because, even with his Hooked Hand, Captain Red Hook's total charisma points are 4, that's not enough to lure away the second CM to his crew. He needs at least 5 charisma point to lure away the second CM.

The loyalty of Captain Petronella's third CM is 3. Captain Red Hook can lure away this CM to his crew but only if he uses his Hooked Hand. If Captain Red Hook does decide to lure away Captain Petronella's third CM to his crew he will need to place the Hooked Hand card into the discard pile.

Any CM that have been lured away are turned sideways to note that they can not be "re-lured" away during this phase.

Phase 6 - Loot the Pies

Now it's time to loot the Pies! All you need to loot a Pie is a total strength (Captain + CM) equal to or greater than the weight of the pie. All CM involved in looting the Pie are placed in the discard pile as they have gone away to eat their share of the Pie. If you had any extra CM they'll stick around and help the Captain loot the next Pie. A Captain can only loot 1 Pie per turn.

Because there are some cards that can mess up a players ability to loot a pie at the last minute here are some options of how to handle the Phase 6 situation...

The primary rule for the looting of Pies is this... Once the turn to loot a Pie gets to a Captain that Captain can quickly yell, "I'm looting a Pie!" At that point he and his crew is frozen and protected from any harm or other cards. (Even cards that say "may be played at any time.") The Captain can now calmly figure out which CM he wants to use to help him loot which Pie away. If, however, the Captain is not able to loot a Pie he must discard his strongest CM. If cards are tied for strength then it must be the strongest strength with the highest loyalty. Remember, the Captain does not have to yell, "I'm looting a Pie!" but it does protect him from cards like the Carob Bean and Kidnapping. You cannot yell "I'm looting a pie!" if it is not yet your turn.

The "nice" alternative option: You can just choose to be nice to each other and never play mean cards against opposing Captains during the Loot a Pie phase.

The "aggressive" alterative option: Anything goes... any Captain can play any card that can legally be played anytime it can be played. Think you're looting a Pie? I hope no one kidnaps your strongest CM or feeds a Carob Bean to a strong CM. Just a note, this version of Phase 6 makes the game last longer.

You need to decide how phase 6 will be played BEFORE the game starts.

a) A Captain must call "looting a pie" to freeze the game. b) The game freezes on phase 6. c) The game can never be frozen.

If no option is chosen the default game play is option (a).

Getting Ready for the Next Round

After every Captain has had their chance at looting a Pie, players need to reset their hands. Any unused Charisma cards stay with their Captains. Any unused Crew also stay with their Captains. At this point, players may discard any unused cards from their hand if they want to. Any player that has less than 3 cards draw until they have 3 cards. Pass the Lead Player card to the left and start again with Phase 1.

If at any time the draw pile runs out of cards, shuffle the discard pile, turn it over and use it for the draw pile.

Winning the Game

The rounds continue until the last pie is looted. The player with the most points wins the game. In the event of a tie:

a) The player with the most points wins. b) The player with the highest total combined weight of all their pies wins. c) The player with the most pies wins.

If all 3 of the above criteria are met... it's a tie! If you're not happy with a tie then

d) The player that ate pie the most recent wins. e) The player that ate the most pie wins. f) The player that looted the first Pie (of the the players that are tied for first).

Special Cards

Here are a few cards that we think deem a little extra attention.

Carob Bean

Yup, the Rats still like to eat these. Place one of these on another Captains CM and they'll scamper off to eat the bean. Too bad for that Captain. Place the Carob Bean card and the CM into the discard pile.

May be used at any time* on any rat who, upon receiving the beans runs away in delight to eat them.

*Cannot be played once a player has called looting a pie.

Charm

Charm - Lures away more that one CM from other crews.

May be used to lure 2 crew members from other crews to your crew in the same turn. They can be from the same crew or 2 different crews.

to your crew. You can lure 2 away from the same Captain or 1 from 2 different Captains. As this card is a Charisma card you want to use it before someone steals it away with the Chrisma Theft card. You get the +2 charisma points AND can lure from two crew members to your crew.

Here is an example of how to use the Charm card:

When luring crew members to your crew add up the total amount of charisma points you have to use - including the charm card if you have it. Let's say you have the charm card and a cutlass. You have:

3 charisma points for the captain, 2 for the charm card and 2 for the cutlass for a total of 7 charisma points.

You could used these 7 points to lure 2 different crew members to your crew or to lure 1 crew member with a higher loyalty. The captains charisma is only added once to the total of all the charisma points used to lure crew members.

Using the above example of 7 points you could lure 1 crew member with a loyalty of (-1) using 3 of the charisma points and 1 crew member with a loyalty of (0) using the remaining 4 points.

Kidnapping

Not enough combined strength on your crew? Just kidnap a CM from another Captain - even if it's protected! Oh, and don't forget to turn the card sideways if you're still in phase 5, We wouldn't want you to lose your newly acquired CM. They're protected just as if you had lured them away.

May be used to kidnap any 1 crew member from any other Pirate, even if it is protected. May be played at any time.*

*Cannot be played once a player has called looting a pie.

Mirror

Mirror - This must be played directly from your hand.

May be used to block the Charm card or to redirect a Spell Card.* It May also be discarded at the end of phase 6 if a player does not wish to keep this card.

*See Rule book for complete details.

It blocks the Charm card. Here's how it works: Allow the player that is using the Charm card to explain all that he is going to do, who he is going to target and what cards he is going to use to make this happen. Then, when he thinks he is done, play the Mirror card on the Charm card. Not only will he not be able to lure CM away from other Captains but all the Charisma cards he was going to use, including the Charm card, are placed in the discard pile along with the Mirror card. (Spells are a reference to a future expansion.)

Spinach

Spinach - This is used to make one of your CM double his strength. Usually you want to use this right before you loot a Pie. Once this card is attached to a CM it can not be moved. If your CM is not used to loot a Pie then this simply stays on the table with the CM it was assigned to. If another Captain lures this CM away the Spinach card goes with him. Since a Captain is never discarded, the Spinach card CANNOT be used on a Captain card. It is for CM only.

May be used at any time on any one rat who, after eating the spinach, feels stronger and doubles his lift power.

Charisma Theft

Charisma Theft - This is used to steal any Charisma card from another Captain. It must be played during Phase 2 - however, it can be played out of turn during phase 2 meaning that you can wait until all players have placed their Charisma cards on the table before deciding to use it. After all, you do want to see what your options are in order to steal the best Charisma card!

May be used to steal 1 charisma card from any other captain. This card must be played during the charisma phase of a turn.

General Game Notes

Phase Cards - There are "Phase Cards" in the deck to be used by newer players to help keep track of the different phases. They help remind players what the 6 phases are and a brief description of what happened in each phase.

Discard a Card - If a card is discarded it is simply placed in the discard pile face up.

A Turn - 1 Turn is broken up into 6 phases. When each player has completed all 6 phases that is the end of a turn.

A Phase - All player must complete the phase they are on before moving to the next phase. Example: All players must have a chance to place their Charisma cards down in Phase 2 before moving on to Phase 3 and placing Crew cards down.

If you see a reference to something that doesn't make sence, such as MerRats or Spells, don't worry about it. It's a reference to cards in future expansion decks.
