Components

  • 5 "nest" boards.
  • 4 double-sided ash tokens (used to determine turn order).
  • 4 phoenix boards (one per player).
  • 42 lower feathers.
  • 42 upper feathers.
  • 2 feather bags (one for upper feathers and one for lower feathers).
  • Scoring notepad.

Objective

Collect feathers from the surrounding nests to give your baby phoenix the most beautiful plumage and score the most points!

Setup

  1. Separate the upper feathers and lower feathers and place each pile into separate bags.
  2. Give each player a phoenix board.
  3. Place the nest boards on the table:
    • For 3 or 4 players: each player places 1 nest board above their phoenix board.
    • For 2 players: each player places 2 nest boards above their phoenix board.
  4. Place an extra nest board in the center of the table.
  5. Randomly draw and place 2 lower feathers and 2 upper feathers on each nest board.
  6. Distribute the ash tokens randomly:
    • For 4 players: give one token to each player.
    • For 3 players: use tokens 1, 2, and 3, and leave token 4/5 in the box.
    • For 2 players: give one player tokens 1 and 4, the other 2 and 3.
    • For the first round, all ash tokens face white-side up.

Rules

Turn order is determined by the number on each player's ash token. The player with token 1 goes first, followed by the player with token 2, and so on, in ascending order.

A game of Phoenix always begins with the tokens showing their white ash side.

On your turn

Choose a nest that doesn't have a token on it. Place your ash token on that nest:

  • If it's your own nest, flip the ash token to the black ash side (values 5 to 8).
  • If it's not your own nest, leave the ash token white side up (values 1 to 4).

There can only be one token on each nest.

Take one feather from that nest and place it on your phoenix board.

A lower feather must be placed before an upper feather can be placed.

Once placed, feathers cannot be moved.

Players continue taking turns until all players have used their ash tokens.

At the end of each round

Each player retrieves the token(s) on the nest above their phoenix. Players cannot flip the tokens and must play them with whatever side (black or white) is facing up.

If there isn't a token on the nest above their phoenix, the player takes the token from the central nest.

Randomly refill the nests so that each one has 2 lower and 2 upper feathers.

For the next round, players continue to take turns in ascending order, always starting with the lowest ash token.

End of the game

The game ends when all players have completed the plumage of their phoenix.

  • 2 players: 8 rounds.
  • 3 or 4 players: 16 rounds.

Creating Your Phoenix's Plumage

To create the most beautiful plumage for your phoenix (which will earn the most points at the end), pay attention to 3 aspects:

  • Feather colors
  • Symbols on feathers
  • Color symmetry (mirrored feathers)

Each lower feather combined with an upper feather forms a complete feather.

There are 4 colors and 3 types of symbols across all feathers.

Scoring

Scoring is done in three phases:

1. Feather colors

  • A complete rainbow feather scores 12 points.
  • A complete feather matching your phoenix's color scores 4 points.
  • A complete feather of a different color scores 2 points.

Notes: A rainbow feather paired with another color counts as that color.

Attention: if the top and bottom feathers are different colors, the feather scores 0 points.

2. Feather symbols

  • Each "Flame" symbol scores 3 points.
  • Each "Moon" symbol scores 2 points.
  • Each "Diamond" symbol scores 1 point.

3. Color symmetry between two feathers (mirror feathers)

Each pair of identical-colored feathers facing each other earns a 5 points bonus.

For example:

  • A yellow lower and upper feather on one side, and the same on the opposite side = +5 points.
  • A yellow lower feather and a black upper feather on one side, and the same on the opposite side = +5 points.

Attention: feathers must be IDENTICAL in color patterns, including rainbow feathers (symbols can be different). Example: if one upper feather is rainbow on one side, the opposite upper feather must also be rainbow.

Victory

The player with the most points wins!

Tie breaker: The player with the most feathers matching their phoenix's color wins. Full rainbow feathers do not count as your phoenix's color. If the number of feathers is still tied, it's a draw.
