Contents

  • 1 pirate (Pete)
  • 4 sailors
  • 4 treasure chests (with two compartments each)
  • 20 precious stones = treasure (5 stones of each colour)
  • 1 game board
  • 1 special die (dots and symbols of pirate)

Aim of the Game

Each sailor tries to get to the different hiding places as quickly as possible in order to collect the treasure of his or her color and take it safely to the ship.

Watch out: during the game the players have to change roles in a clever way:

  • If dots are shown on the die, the player is a sailor who tries to collect the precious stones of his or her color, hiding them away from the eyes of the pirate and taking them to his or her ship.
  • If the pirate is shown on the die, the player becomes the pirate who is chasing the sailors and trying to hinder them from collecting the treasure.

Preparation

Choose sailor, precious stones and chest: each player chooses a sailor, then takes the precious stones and the treasure chest of the corresponding color. Close the treasure chest with the corresponding sliding lid. If there are less than four players, the sailors, chests and treasure stones not needed remain in the game box.

Sliding open the lid of your chest you will see that there are two compartments. Thanks to these compartments you will later be able to smuggle the treasure stones past Pete the Pirate.

The game board shows: a square for treasure-chest; a square with turning arrow (see game variant for meaning); the starting square for Pete the Pirate; the sailor's bay; and hiding places for treasure.

  • Sailors into bay: the sailors' ship is anchored in the bay, put your sailors on it. The bay is their starting and finishing square.
  • Distribute precious stones between hiding places: each player places a precious stone on each of the five hiding places.
  • Place pirate on center square: place Pete the Pirate on the square in the center with the symbol of a pirate - this square is his starting square.
  • Place treasure chests: close your treasure chests and place each of them on one of the squares outlined in the corners of the game board. Each player chooses for his or her chest the square closest to where he or she is sitting.

Note: on some of the circuit squares you will notice turning arrows. These arrows are only used for a more difficult game variation, but not for the standard game.

Get the die ready.

How to Play

The game proceeds in a clockwise direction and each player throws the die once. The youngest player begins.

On the die either appears a number of dots (1, 2, 3, 4) or the symbol of the pirate and thus determines whether you move your sailor and collect treasure stones of your color (dots on the die), or you play the role of Pete the Pirate and hinder the other sailors from collecting precious stones (symbol of pirate).

If on the Die Appears a Number of Dots: Move Sailor

Move your sailor the corresponding number of squares in any direction. You can also decide not to use up the dots, for example in order to stop on a hiding place for the treasure and collect the precious stone of your color lying there.

The following applies:

  • On all squares there can be more than one sailor at the same time.
  • Watch out: you can not move onto or past the square where the pirate is! During the game it may happen that Pete stands on the square next to a hiding place on which you are at that moment. This means that you are confined to it until the symbol of the pirate appears again on the dice and the pirate moves on.
  • The sailors may also step on the center square (= starting square for Pete) - but only if Pete is not there at the moment.

Where does your sailor land?

  • On an ordinary square? Nothing happens - pass on the die to the next player.
  • On a hiding place for the treasure? Then you can pick up the precious stone of your color and pack it away in your treasure chest. Slide the lid just far enough to open one compartment of your chest. You may only open one compartment and put the treasure in there. If there are no more precious stones of your color on the hiding place you, of course, cannot collect any.

Be careful: always remember in which compartment you put your precious stone so that you can show an empty compartment when you meet Pete (see "If the die shows the symbol of the pirate").

Get treasure back to bay or keep on collecting? During the game you can decide to go back to the ship in the bay at any moment (once you reach the bay remaining dots of the dice cannot be used up). Once your sailor is there, you open both compartments of the chest, take out the precious stones and put them in front of you. In the next round you can start off again to gather more treasure stones.

Hint: if you have accidentally put precious stones in both compartments, you should walk back to the bay and get your stones to safety before Pete catches you.

If the Die Shows the Symbol of the Pirate: Pirate Moves 1, 2 or 3 Squares

Now you move Pete the Pirate. Decide whether you want to move him one, two or three squares in any direction.

The following applies:

  • Pete the Pirate can step on all squares except the bay of the sailors.
  • Each time he moves on a square with one or more sailors on it, he stops there.

If Pete meets a sailor of another player by the end of his move, you play the role of a pirate who wants to keep a close eye on his treasure:

  1. Turn treasure chest. You first turn the treasure chest of the player to whom this sailor belongs slowly a quarter of a turn in one direction (look at the indications on the game board: they show how the chest has to be placed and turned): one, two or three quarters of a circle. Watch out: when turning the chest you have to make sure the chest remains on the game board. It should not be lifted! Also make sure that the lid remains closed. By turning the chest you try to confuse its owner because he or she has to remember where the compartment with the treasure is!
  2. Ask player to open chest. Then you ask: "Hey, sailor, have you stolen my treasure?" The sailor in question has to open his or her treasure chest sliding the lid halfway open and showing you one compartment. He or she can decide which compartment to show.
    • If the compartment is empty, the player is lucky and keeps the well-hidden treasure.
    • If there are treasure stones in the compartment, the player has bad luck and Pete the Pirate takes away the treasure and distributes the precious stones back among the hiding places with no stones of this color. Note: there can be only one stone per color on each hiding place.

Pirate meets his own sailor: nothing happens - it's the next player's turn to throw the die.

Pirate meets other sailors: if Pete stops on a square with more than one sailor, including "his own", nothing will happen to your own sailor. But you can turn around the treasure chest(s) of the other player(s) and question them as described above.

End of the Game

The first player to collect all five precious stones and bring back his or her sailor to the bay, wins the game.

Game Variations

The search for treasure can be made more difficult for older players in the following way. Turning arrow:

  1. Turn chest: if a sailor lands on a square with a turning arrow, he or she may immediately turn the treasure chest of any other player (from one quarter up to three quarters of a circle following the indications of the game board),

or

  1. Turn chest and turn it upside down: he or she cannot only turn around but also turn the treasure chest of any other player upside down. The chest stays in this position until it has to be turned again and so has to be put right side up first, or until its player lands on a treasure hiding place and thus can put it right side up in order to place the collected precious stone in one of the compartments and put the chest back on its square on the game board.
