Components
- Game board with a rotating disc
- 4 ghost figures (3 disguised children and the castle ghost)
- 4 candles (black, red, blue, yellow)
- 1 die (faces 1, 2, 3 and ghost icons)
- 4 search cards
- 16 candle tokens
- 1 cogwheel
- 4 furniture pieces (fireplace, armchair, chest, knight's armour)
- 4 removable stands
- Plastic part with removable mirrors
Setup
Before playing for the first time, remove the protective film from the mirrors and carefully punch out all parts from the perforated cards.
- Place the cogwheel in the centre of the board and slowly turn it in the direction of the arrow until the mirrors above snap into place. Then remove the cogwheel.
- Insert the 4 furniture pieces with their removable stands into the rotating disc. Then place the disc in the centre of the board so that the knight's armour, chest, fireplace and armchair are hidden exactly behind the mirrors.
- Give each ghost figure one candle. Shuffle the ghost figures and place them on the spaces in front of the steps, without looking under them. Throughout the game, you must not look under them.
- Shuffle the candle tokens and place them face down on the marked spaces on the board.
- Each player takes one search card. Place the die beside the board.
Goal of the Game
You must find out who the real castle ghost is and which candle it is holding. The only way to recognise the ghost is with a mirror, because it does not reflect in mirrors!
To finally expose the castle ghost, you must first find and collect your own 4 candle tokens. You recognise them by the symbol on your search card.
Playing the Game
Players take turns. The player who most recently dressed up as a ghost rolls the die and starts the game.
If the die shows a number, move one of the ghost figures by the number of spaces shown on the die, in any direction, and try to take a candle token.
How to collect candle tokens: Turn over a candle token that lies next to your space and look at it. If you see a candle with your symbol on its background, you may take this token. Otherwise, it stays on the table face up.
If the space you want to move your figure to is occupied, you may move the figure standing there to another free space.
Then the turn passes to the next player.
If the die shows a ghost, carry out a mirror check and/or make a joker move.
Mirror check: Place any ghost figure in the centre of the rotating disc and slowly turn it in the direction of the arrow until it faces directly into a mirror.
If you see a ghost in the mirror, it is merely a disguised child! Clearly announce the colour of the candle you see in the ghost's hands in the mirror. Hint: the candles come in four different colours: blue, red, yellow and black. Knowing the colours of the candles held by the disguised children, you can deduce the colour of the candle held by the castle ghost.
If the mirrors have fallen, you have found the real ghost! But you can only expose it once you have collected your four candle tokens. Keep turning the ghost figure in the direction of the arrow until the mirrors are raised again.
Joker move: Then place a ghost figure on any space and try to take one of your candle tokens. You may also forgo the mirror check and make a joker move with any of the ghost figures! Then the turn passes to the next player.
Forgot to raise the mirrors? No problem! Use the cogwheel to return the mirrors to their starting position (see point 1 of the Setup section).
Unmasking the Castle Ghost
As soon as you have collected your last candle token, you immediately try to unmask the real castle ghost. To do this, take the figure you believe to be the real ghost and subject it to a mirror check!
If the mirrors have fallen, you have unmasked the real castle ghost! Now name the colour of its candle and look at the candle to make sure you were right.
If the mirrors remained up, or if you named the wrong candle colour, place the ghost figure back on any space and lay your collected candle tokens face up on the free spaces reserved for them on the board. Continue playing until the next player has collected their 4 candle tokens. Then a new attempt to unmask the castle ghost may be made.
End of the Game and Winner
The player who first unmasks the real castle ghost and correctly names the colour of its candle wins the game!
Variant for Ghost Experts
Want to keep playing? No problem! As memory experts, you surely know which candle colours the other ghosts are holding? Collect your candle tokens (including those lying on the board). Set aside the candle token of the castle ghost. Now try to match the remaining three tokens to the candles held by the other ghosts. Next to each ghost, place the candle token you believe belongs to it. Ready? Take a look.
For each correct guess you score one point. The player who unmasked the castle ghost and correctly named the colour of its candle receives two additional points. The player with the highest score wins! If the scores are tied, there are several winners.
