Components
- 1 game board
- 6 turtle figures (in 6 colors) for the players
- 6 square owner tiles
- 6 round mole tokens
- 59 race cards
- 1 black turtle figure
- 1 raven figure
Setup
Set up the board, then place all the turtles in a single row next to each other on the start space. Regardless of the number of players, all the turtle figures take part in the game.
Place the six round mole tokens mole-side up, mix them, and distribute them at random on the mole-mound spaces on the board.
Place the owner tiles face down and mix them. Each player draws one tile and checks the color of their turtle. Players may not look at their opponents' tiles. If there are fewer than 6 players, return the unused turtle tiles to the box without revealing the colors on them.
Shuffle the cards and deal 5 to each player. Players hold their cards so that the others cannot see what is on them. Place the remaining cards face down next to the board as the starting draw pile.
Goal of the game
Each player's aim is to bring their own turtle to the lettuce first.
Gameplay
The player who most recently ate lettuce (or the youngest player) starts. Subsequent players take their turns in clockwise order.
On their turn, a player decides which of the 5 cards in hand to play face up on the table. All played cards go onto a single common discard pile. The player then moves a turtle shown on the card, following the markings on it.
At the end of the turn, the player draws a fifth card from the starting pile. If the starting pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile and form a new starting pile from it.
The player moves a turtle in the color shown on the card they played. Therefore, during the game a player moves not only their own turtle but also turtles of other colors. This way, the participants do not know which turtles belong to which opponents.
If the card shows a multicolored turtle, the player may move a turtle of any color they choose.
When a turtle moves onto a space occupied by another turtle, it climbs onto it. Any number of turtles may stand on one space, one on top of another.
NOTE: A turtle that moves takes with it all the turtles on its shell. Turtles that were beneath it stay on the previous space.
EXCEPTION: Apart from the start space and the two fox spaces, each stone may hold only one turtle stack.
Special spaces
Hungry foxes
Two hungry foxes lurk on the stones overgrown with moss. Each turtle that lands there must hide in the grass. On this space, a turtle stack also falls apart and all the turtles stand individually.
Rapid river
Turtles can race, but they cannot swim! Each single turtle or turtle stack that ends its movement on a river space must immediately step back to the space in front of the river.
Mole mounds
The first time a single turtle or a turtle stack stands on a mole-mound space (whether it arrived by moving forward or by moving backward), the players turn over the mole token and immediately carry out the action shown on it. The action token remains face up until the end of the game and applies every time anyone stands on it. The player who moved the turtle onto the token's space carries out the action.
"Speed up!" The player moves the turtle (and the turtles on it) that was moved by the current card forward by two additional spaces. After this action the space is always empty. There are two such tokens in the game.
"Not so fast, my friend!" The player chooses one of the 6 turtles and moves it back by one space. Of course, the player moves it together with all the other turtles sitting on its back.
"Try again!" The player who stands on this space plays a card from their hand again. After carrying out the action, they must refill their hand to 5 cards.
"Take a risk" The player who stands on this space draws the top card of the draw pile and carries out the action shown on it. Then they discard the card to the discard pile.
"What bad luck!" All turtles that are on this space return to the "start" space. Attention! The action "What bad luck!" can happen only once! Immediately after carrying out the action, the token must be returned to the box. If anyone stands on this space again, nothing happens.
Cards
The turtle colors on the cards match the colors of the wooden turtle figures. Multicolored cards may apply to any turtle. Remember that you always move a turtle together with the turtles on its back.
"Move forward!" Move a turtle in the specified color (the example shows red) forward by 1, 2 or 3 spaces. Multicolored version: choose any turtle and move it forward by 1 or 2 spaces.
"Move back!" Move a turtle in the specified color (the example shows red) back by 1 space. Multicolored version: choose any turtle and move it back by 1 or 2 spaces.
Note: Turtles cannot be moved back beyond the "start" space.
"Catch up with the rest!" Move the turtle that is last in the race forward by 1, 2 or 3 spaces. (If several turtles occupy the last space, including the "start" space, you may choose any one of them.)
"Leader's curse" Move back the turtle that is at the beginning of the race by 1, 2 or 3 spaces.
End of the game
The game ends when one of the turtles reaches the space with the lettuce. Then all players reveal their owner tiles. The player whose turtle reached the goal wins.
Special cases:
- If a turtle stack reaches the goal, the race is won by the turtle at the bottom of the stack, that is, the one that bravely carried its companions.
- The remaining players take places according to their distance from the lettuce. (If turtles are in a stack, the turtles at the bottom finish ahead of those on top.)
- Turtles that were left on the fox space, and those that had no owners, are skipped in the results.
- If the turtles of all players are stuck on the fox space, and the winning turtle is in a color that does not belong to any player, there is no winner.
Add-on: Black turtle
Add the black turtle to the race and the cards with the black turtle to the deck. During play, treat it like any other turtle, but remember that:
- The black turtle has no owner. Therefore no player hides behind it.
- At the end of the game, every turtle that is on the same space as the black turtle is eliminated from the race classification! If all players finished the race on the fox space or on a space occupied by the black turtle (or on a space with the raven, see below), there is no winner in this game.
Add-on: Raven
Add the raven to the game. During setup, place the raven together with the turtles on the "start" space. Turtles are afraid of the raven: if it occupies the same space as they do, they cannot move. If a card with a turtle in a specified color is played, and the raven is on that turtle's space, the turtle stays motionless, while the raven moves according to the instructions on the card.
At the beginning of the game the raven always moves first, because all turtles start from the same space.
If the raven lands on a mole-mound space, nothing happens.
At the end of the game, every turtle that is on the same space as the raven is eliminated from the race classification! If all players finished the race on the fox space or on a space occupied by the raven (or the black turtle, see above), there is no winner in this game.
The add-ons may be combined or used separately.
Variant for younger players
When playing with small children, players may choose a favorite turtle color, and place their owner tile in front of them turtle-side up. In this situation the players know who owns which turtle.
