Card Anatomy

The cards of Peasant Buffet have symbols that mean stuff!

Peasant Cards: Labeled on the card as Peasant Name, Wants, Special Ability, and Card Name.

Village Cards: Labeled on the card as Card Color, Instructional Text, and Card Name.

Card Types

There are six types of cards in Peasant Buffet. Each type of card serves a different purpose in the game and is color coded for easy recognition.

Peasant Cards (Blue): You play as these puny mortals. Each Peasant has wants and a special ability. Wants are items that your peasant must collect for points!

Event Cards (Yellow): When an event is drawn, crap's going down! Resolve this card immediately, then discard it.

Doom Cards (Red): These cards spell DOOM for your friends! They can only be played from your inventory, but they can be played at any time. After the card is used, discard it.

Item Cards (Green): Items can be used to score points at the end of the game, or they can be discarded to fight monsters.

Monster Cards (Black Border): Ahhh crap, a monster! These cards end your turn. Unless you can defeat the monster, discard the loot and take the monster instead. Each monster has weaknesses on the top right of their card that can be discarded to defeat them.

Boss Monster Cards (Black and Gold Border): Follows the same rules as a monster, but is placed in the center of the table and counts as a monster toward every player in the game until defeated! Unless otherwise stated, Boss Monsters cannot be affected by specials, doom cards or Events.

Setting Up The Game

Separate the peasants from the Village cards. Shuffle the village! Each player takes a peasant at random to represent them. Set the village in the middle of the playing area. The first player to draw a card goes first.

The Playing Area

The Village: The deck of cards from which you draw.

Loot: When you draw a card, it goes in the center of the table. Cards in the loot cannot be played and are collected at the end of your turn, unless you draw a monster and cannot defeat it.

Inventory: The cards that you have collected throughout the game. Items and doom cards in your inventory can be used in the game.

Discard Pile: Where discarded cards go... TO DIE

How To Play

The Game: Players take their turns in a clockwise rotation.

Your Turn: On your turn, you may draw as many cards as you want, but you must draw at least one. Cards that are drawn during your turn are placed in the loot. You may end your turn at any time after the first draw. Once your turn has ended, move the loot to your inventory.

Monsters: When a monster is drawn, your turn ends. If you have the monster's weaknesses in your inventory, you may play them on the monster to defeat them. When all of the monster's weaknesses are met, the monster is discarded with them. If you can defeat the monster when it is drawn, collect the loot. Otherwise, discard the loot and move the monster to your inventory. If at any time you have five or more monsters and cannot eliminate one, you are devoured.

Boss Monsters: Resolved like a monster, except these cards are kept in the center of the playing area and count toward every living player's monster total. Anyone can contribute to defeating a boss monster.

Being Devoured

If, at any time, you have five or more monsters in your inventory (including the Boss monsters that affect everyone) and cannot eliminate any of them, you are devoured. Being devoured is permenant. Upon being devoured, your inventory is locked; you cannot take cards and cannot be affected by any other player for the remainder of the game. You are out, but you still score points at the end.

Ending The Game

The game ends when all peasants are devoured, the last remaining player completes one turn, or the village runs out of cards.

Each player tallies up their score by counting how many items they have in their inventory that match their peasant's wants. Surviving players score one additional point. In the event of a tie, the tied player who last drew a card wins.

Rule Clarifications

Order of Resolution: Cards are dealt with in the order that they are played. The exception to this is when a card can directly interrupt another card, or if a special ability can be used.

Recycle: Put the card face down on the bottom of the Village.

When Loot Becomes Inventory: Once you've announced that your turn is over, players have three seconds to act before you take your loot.

Zombie: A Zombie is a peasant-monster! That monster is controlled by the player. On the zombie's turn, it may move to any living peasant but may not take any other actions. Any peasant devoured with a zombie in their inventory also becomes a zombie. Zombies cannot be defeated or recycled.

Monster Fightin': You may fight monsters in your inventory at any time.

Getting Monsters: Your turn only ends if you draw a monster, not if one is added to your inventory by an event or doom card.

Rules Discrepancy: Specific rules trump general rules.
