Object of the Game
Own 7 coasters by winning different games.
Ingredients
1 handful of friends, 35 coasters, 430 cards, 1 die, 1 sand timer, 1 pot of modelling clay, 5 plastic cups, 2 plastic balls, 2 paper pads, 4 pencils, a few touches of humour and a good dose of laughter!
Recipe
How to set up a successful evening with friends?
- Shuffle the 35 coasters and lay them face down (Partini side visible) in the middle of the table.
- Form 2 teams, with the same number of players if possible.
- Shuffle the 5 decks of cards well and lay them face down, within reach of all players.
How to Taste (How to Play)
- The team whose members are the oldest starts (because, as everyone knows, the best jams are made in the old pots!). A player on this team picks a coaster, turns it over and announces the game: Mime Fizz, Hum Punch, À la Tienne, À l'Envers, Shooters or Bloody Sculpt. If he draws a Joker coaster, he may choose which of the 6 games he wants to taste (all games are explained later in this leaflet).
- For Shooters or À la Tienne, all teams play, so the team that wins the game keeps the coaster. For all other games, only the team that drew the coaster plays. If this team wins, it keeps the coaster; if it loses, it must put the coaster back on the table, face down, and shuffle. It is then the next team's turn to choose a coaster (the team seated to the left).
- The team that wins 7 coasters wins the game!
Recipe Variants
When you become a chef, you may try to have the words guessed without giving the categories.
To shorten or lengthen the playing time, you may change the number of coasters needed to win.
You may also choose only one ingredient and play only the game you prefer, to personalise your parties and give a theme to your evening!
Mime Fizz
You have the time of one sand timer to have 2 words guessed by miming.
Rules of Play
-
A person from the team whose turn it is draws a coaster from those on the table and lands on the Mime Fizz challenge: he will be the Mime of his team.
-
The Mime draws a card from the Mime Fizz deck and chooses the 2 words he will try to have guessed. Then, to help his teammates, he reads aloud the category printed at the top of the card.
Note: if this card does not suit the Mime, he may draw another (one time only). If he finds the second card even less appealing, he may go back to the first.
-
When the Mime is ready, the opposing team turns the sand timer over and the challenge begins! As soon as he starts to have the first word guessed, the players of his team (and only them) may start calling out their answers.
-
Additional rules:
- Only the player who drew the coaster may have the 2 words guessed: no change of Mime in mid-course!
- NO word or noise is allowed! Stay silent! Any cheating ends the challenge!
- Since you choose the words to be guessed, you may not pass on a word.
-
Example: the word to be guessed is "Poil à gratter" (itching powder). The Mime then shows the hairs on his arm and scratches himself.
-
To win the coaster: the 2 words must be guessed before the end of the sand timer.
Hum Punch
You have the time of one sand timer to have 2 words guessed by humming.
Rules of Play
-
A person from the team whose turn it is draws a coaster from those on the table and lands on the Hum Punch challenge: he will be the Singer of his team.
-
The Singer draws a card from the Hum Punch deck and chooses from the 4 songs on the card the 2 he will try to have guessed by humming. Then, to help his teammates, he reads aloud the category printed at the top of the card.
Note: if this card does not suit the Singer, he may draw another (one time only). If he finds the second card even less appealing, he may go back to the first.
-
When the Singer is ready, the opposing team turns the sand timer over and the challenge begins! As soon as he starts to have the first word guessed, the players of his team (and only them) may start calling out their answers.
Note: only the Singer's teammates may play. They must give the title of the song. The artist's or group's name is printed on the card just to help the Singer.
-
Additional rules:
- You may not use any words from the song. You may, however, replace them with "la, la, la", "na, na, na" or something similar, rather than just humming with a closed mouth.
- You may also make gestures. For example, if you must have "Kiss" by Prince guessed, you may send a kiss with your hand.
-
To win the coaster: the 2 songs must be guessed before the end of the sand timer.
Tips & Tricks
Printed as a panel below the Mime Fizz and Hum Punch rules.
- For games where the category is printed on the card, don't hesitate to repeat that category to the players to help them.
- Be inventive! The best cocktails are always the most creative! For the Mime Fizz, Bloody Sculpt and À l'Envers challenges, you may cut the words to be guessed into syllables, or the expressions into words! You may also mime, sculpt or give clues word by word.
- Personalise your parties! You have invited only saucepans and touchy people? Play only the Hum Punch and À la Tienne challenges for guaranteed lively evenings!
Beware of Anyone Who Doesn't Follow the Rules!
- If a player breaks a rule, he must choose another word on the card to be guessed. If he breaks the rules a second time in the same turn, the challenge stops and it is the next team's turn to play.
À la Tienne!
You must write a truth or a funny thing about the designated person.
Rules of Play
-
No need for a sand timer for this challenge.
-
A person from the team whose turn it is draws a coaster from those on the table and lands on the À la Tienne! challenge: he will be the Star of the Evening, who will "go on the grill", and he will roll the die.
-
All players, except the Star of the Evening, take a sheet of paper and a pencil.
-
The Star of the Evening rolls the die and reads aloud what is printed on its face:
I AM I WANT I LIKE I DON'T I HAVE I... -
Each player, out of sight of the others, writes a truth or a funny thing about the Star of the Evening, beginning the sentence with what the die shows. You may write a short or long sentence, make a compliment or a criticism, try to make people believe an outlandish story or tell an embarrassing one: be inventive!
Example: the die lands on "I WANT" and the Star of the Evening is known for her lunatic side. You may write "I want coffee for my breakfast. Or no, rather tea... oh and then no: I want nothing."
-
Once all players have written their sentence on their sheet of paper, a player from the opposing team gathers all the sheets, shuffles them and reads them aloud. If the Star of the Evening's first name is Max, the reader must say: "my name is Max and I WANT..."
Note: in this challenge all teams play, so the team that wins keeps the coaster (see "How to Taste", point 2).
Bloody Sculpt
You have the time of one sand timer to have 2 words guessed by sculpting.
Rules of Play
-
A person from the team whose turn it is draws a coaster from those on the table and lands on the Bloody Sculpt challenge: he will be the Sculptor of his team.
-
The Sculptor draws a card from the Bloody Sculpt deck and chooses from the 3 objects on the card the 2 he will try to have guessed by sculpting them with the modelling clay. Then, to help his teammates, he reads aloud the category printed at the top of the card.
Note: if this card does not suit the Sculptor, he may draw another (one time only). If he finds the second card even less appealing, he may go back to the first.
-
When the Sculptor is ready, the opposing team turns the sand timer over and the challenge begins! As soon as he starts to sculpt the first word, the players of his team (and only them) may start calling out their answers.
-
Additional rules:
It is forbidden to speak or make noises, but you may use the object you sculpted to mime. For example, if you must have "Tennis racket" guessed, you may sculpt the racket and use it to mime a serve with an imaginary ball.
-
To win the coaster: the 2 words must be guessed before the end of the sand timer.
Modelling Clay
Modelling clay. Not intended to be eaten. If clay sticks to the playing surface, collect the crumbs, let the excess dry, then scrub or vacuum. Always put the modelling clay back in its pot after play. Store in a cool, dry place. If necessary, add water drop by drop to restore the clay's softness.
WARNING: CONTAINS WHEAT.
À l'Envers
You have the time of one sand timer to have 3 words guessed by giving clues.
Rules of Play
-
A person from the team whose turn it is draws a coaster from those on the table and lands on the À l'Envers challenge: he will be the Clue Giver of his team.
-
The Clue Giver draws a card from the À l'Envers deck and chooses from the 5 words on the card the 3 he will try to have guessed. Then, to help his teammates, he reads aloud the category printed at the top of the card.
Note: if this card does not suit the Clue Giver, he may draw another (one time only). If he finds the second card even less appealing, he may go back to the first.
-
This is not a simple clue game like Taboo. In this version, you must say what the word is NOT. For example, if you must have "Giraffe" guessed, you may say "It is NOT an animal with a short neck" (the French original reads "un petit coup", a pun on "petit cou", short neck). You may also give its inverse, its opposite. For example, if you must have "Boudin aux Pommes" (apple black pudding) guessed, you may say "Monica Bellucci aux Poires" (Monica Bellucci with pears), a French pun on the same words.
-
When the Clue Giver is ready, the opposing team turns the sand timer over and the challenge begins! As soon as he starts to have the first word guessed, the players of his team (and only them) may start calling out their answers.
-
Additional rules:
- Clues may be sentences or simple words, but they MUST ABSOLUTELY give the opposite.
- Adding a simple "ne" (not) is not allowed: you must give a word opposite to the one you want guessed. For example, if you must have "Omer Simpson" guessed, you may not say "He is a character who doesn't like beer" but you must say "He is not a character who likes water." (The French names are a play on "Homer Simpson".)
- You may not use as a clue a word contained in the one you must have guessed. For example, if you must have "Lave-vaisselle" (dishwasher) guessed, you may not say "It dirties the dishes" because the word "vaisselle" (dishes) is part of the answer.
- You may also draw a comparison with a similar object. For example, if you must have "Hot dog" guessed, you may say "It is not a hamburger."
Shooters
In pairs or in teams, you must be the most skilful with the ball and the cup within the time limit!
Rules of Play
-
A person from the team whose turn it is draws a coaster from those on the table and lands on the Shooters challenge: he will be the Shooter of his team. The other team chooses the Challenger.
Note: some challenges are played with several players per team.
-
The Shooter draws a card from the deck. This card explains how to set up and carry out the challenge with the balls and cups. (The printed text has a gap at this point, where a word is missing from the original leaflet.)
-
When everyone is ready, you may start!
-
To win the coaster: the first to complete the challenge (whether the Shooter's team or the Challenger's) wins the coaster.
