Object of the Game
Strategically bid on plots of land in order to be the richest heir at the end of the game.
Setup
- Place the game board in the center of the table, then place the Locomotive on any of the railroad squares and the Boat on any of the river squares.
- Randomly place one Bonus token on each of the 19 plots of land. Plots of land are the 19 designated zones on the map which can be bought over the course of the game. There are 19 plots (7 Deserts, 6 Prairies, 6 Forests) including 3 Desert plots that contain a mine and 1 Prairie plot that contains the ranch. The saloon, river and rails are not plots of land.
- Shuffle the 5 Mine cards together and place these face-down on each "Mine" space on the board. The remaining unused cards are placed back in the box without being consulted.
- Shuffle the 3 Ranch cards together and place one face-down on the "Ranch" space on the board. The remaining unused cards are placed back in the box without being consulted.
- Place 1 banknote on the saloon.
- Place the 19 numbered Plot tokens face-down next to the board.
- Make 5 piles of banknotes on the edge of the board. The 5 piles should respectively be made up of 3 banknotes, 4 banknotes, 5 banknotes, 6 banknotes and 7 banknotes.
- Shuffle the 10 Shared Objective cards together and place one face-up on each of the 5 piles of banknotes. The remaining unused cards go back in the box.
- Place the 2 Pistol Duel cards to the side of the game board.
- Each player receives:
- 8 $1000 banknotes
- 10 Hat tokens in their chosen color
- 1 Duel token
- 2 Secret Objective cards which players consult privately. The remaining unused cards are placed back in the box without being consulted.
The remaining banknotes are put together to make the bank.
The last player to have watched a Western movie takes the First Player token and the game begins!
On your first game, assemble the Auction In Progress token, the Locomotive and the Boat by following the assembly instructions.
Turns
Each turn is carried out in 3 steps:
- Bidding
- Buying a plot
- Verifying shared objectives
1. Bidding
The player with the First Player token randomly chooses a Plot token and places the Auction In Progress token on the corresponding plot of land on the board. This allows all players to quickly identify the plot of land being auctioned.
Starting with the first player and moving clockwise, each player is free to choose one of the following actions:
- Bid: either by bidding first or by outbidding the previous player's bid by at least $1000.
- Pass: a player who passes can no longer participate in the current auction.
Bidding continues until all but one of the players have passed.
Example: In a four player game, Jeff picks up the token for Plot 17. He bids $3000. Monica bids $4000. Ronald passes and Ashley bids $5000. Jeff outbids her by offering $7000. Monica passes and Ashley also passes on her turn. Jeff wins the auction.
WARNING:
- You cannot bid an amount that you cannot pay with your banknotes!
- If no one wants to bid on this plot of land, the first player MUST purchase it for the minimum sum of $1000. If the first player does not have $1000 then they get the land for free.
2. Buying a plot
The player who made the best offer wins the plot but before that player can take possession of it, the other players must be paid (even if they did not participate in the auction). This is done by sharing out the value of the plot equally.
If the sum being paid cannot be equally shared in its entirety, the player leaves the amount that cannot be distributed as a tip for the saloon (to do this, place the banknotes on the board on the saloon space).
Example: Jeff has just won Plot 17 for $7000. He gives $2000 to Monica, then $2000 to Ronald and $2000 to Ashley. The remaining $1000 is placed on the saloon space.
Players who take possession of a plot must:
- Place a Hat token of their color on the purchased plot and pick up the Plot token.
- Collect the Bonus token and immediately apply its effects.
IMPORTANT: If the player who won the auction receives a Saloon token, that player does not collect any tips from the purchase of the current plot. Tips from the current plot remain in play in the saloon until the next Saloon token after this one.
If the plot contains a ranch or a mine, pick up and show the corresponding card and immediately collect the amount of money indicated on the card from the bank.
Take the First Player token and the Auction In Progress token.
3. Verifying shared objectives
The player then verifies if any shared objectives have been completed. If this is the case, the corresponding card is discarded and the player wins the banknotes underneath.
INFORMATION: It is possible to complete several shared objectives on one turn. All of these cards are then taken by the player.
If a player forgot to check the shared objective cards on a previous turn, and the objective is still available, then they may claim it out of sequence (as though they had completed it on a previous turn).
The turn ends. The player with the First Player token starts a new turn by turning over another Plot token.
Once all 19 plots have been bought, the game ends.
Pappy Winchester's Small Print
Sharing out an inheritance isn't always easy. Pappy Winchester knew that well but even so, he decided to complicate things a little.
MONEY: The money players possess remains secret throughout the game. Players can keep their money in their hands or hide it under the table. As a reminder, players cannot bid an amount of money if they cannot pay it!
DUELS: Each player starts the game with a Duel token. When there are only 2 players participating in an auction, one of them is allowed to use their Duel token against the other.
"Hey Clint! Bet I'm faster than you!"
When a Duel token is used it is discarded and put back in the box.
Once a duel is declared, the auction ends immediately.
The duel: The 2 Pistol Duel cards are shuffled face down by a player who is not taking part in the duel. Each dueling player randomly picks a card and the two players turn them over simultaneously.
- Bang!: The winning player pays the amount that was last bid in the auction (regardless of who did the bidding) and they take possession of the plot.
- Click!: Unlucky! Your pistol isn't loaded and you've just lost the duel.
Be warned, each player only has one single Duel token for the whole game! Use it at the right moment and make your choice wisely!
MINES: It's well known that Pappy often dug in these mines and that's where he made his fortune. But do the mines still contain gold or have they already been emptied?
When a player buys a plot of land containing a Mine card, the player reveals it and immediately wins the amount indicated on the card. The money is taken from the bank and the Mine card is returned to the box.
THE RANCH: Rumor has it that Pappy stashed away part of his fortune in his ranch but no one knows exactly where… More importantly, no one knows if any of it's left!
When a player buys the ranch, that player takes the ranch card and reveals it, immediately winning the amount indicated on the card. The money is taken from the bank and the Ranch card is returned to the box.
BONUS TOKENS: Each time a player purchases a plot of land, that player also wins the Bonus token found there and must immediately apply its effects, making sure to keep the token next to them. Keeping the tokens can allow certain objective cards to be completed.
3 kinds of token exist:
- Movement: this token allows the player to "activate" either the Boat or the Locomotive, which allows it to move forward or backward one or several spaces. The Locomotive must always stay on the rails, and the Boat on the river. The player may also choose to declare the Boat or Locomotive "activated" without moving its location. Each plot with a side adjacent to the activated vehicle brings $1000 to the corresponding landowner. This money is taken from the bank.
- The Saloon: this token allows players to collect all the tips found in the saloon!! Jackpot!! Or not… Reminder: You cannot collect the tips you have just deposited when purchasing the plot of land in play.
- Rumor: this token allows players to have a look at any card they want. It is therefore possible to look at an opponent's Objective card, the Ranch card or one of the Mine cards on the board.
SECRET OBJECTIVE CARDS: You already had your eye on Pappy Winchester's lands and knew how you would run them well before his death. Your secret objectives will help you strategize. These cards cannot be used while the game is being played and only earn players money at the end of the game.
End of the Game and Final Scoring
Once the 19th plot of land has been purchased and claimed, the game ends and players can start calculating their total fortunes.
Players add the following elements together:
- The sum indicated on their completed Secret Objective cards.
- The banknotes they possess.
- The player who has the most plots at the end of the game wins $5000. In the event of a tie, the player with the most continuous (touching) plots wins the $5000. If a tie persists, the players involved each receive $5000. This money is taken from the bank.
The richest player at the end of the game becomes the new head of the family!
In the event of a tie, the winner is decided according to the following elements, in order:
- The player with the most cash (not including that gained by Secret Objective cards).
- The player who still has a Duel token.
If not, the players must share the title of head of the family.
