I. Object of the game

We've just moved into our new house. To make it cozy, we are about to hang wallpapers, but unfortunately, my roommate and I have different tastes. We have no other choice but to go on a war, "Papering duel." Repaper your house with your favorite wallpapers. You are welcome to hang them on top of your roommate's. You will win the battle in two conditions: (1) make three styles in a turn, (2) make it impossible for your roommate to break your styles.

II. Contents

  • 1 3x3 game board
  • 1 claim board
  • 27 rectangular cards (18 basic, 9 special)
  • 27 diagonal cards (18 basic, 9 special)
  • 6 player markers (3 for each color)
  • 1 hourglass
  • 1 rule book

III. Setup

  1. Take all contents out of the box then place the game board on the inlay. Place the claim board next to the game board.
  2. Each player takes three markers of a color.
  3. Each player takes a whole deck of cards of a kind (either rectangular or diagonal). Shuffle it and put it face down in front of you.
  4. Take three cards from your deck. If they are all special cards, put those cards back into your deck, reshuffle, and draw new cards. You need to have at least one basic card to start with.
  5. Start the game from the starting player.

IV. Play

Initial Step

Each player will place a card on the game board before they start the game. Begin with the starting player; place a basic card on the game board anywhere he wishes to from his hands. Then, draw a card from the deck. The next player will do the same except for that he cannot cover up the space which has been papered by the starting player.

How to play

In your turn, you will 1. play cards, 2. claim styles, and 3. draw new cards.

  1. Play Cards: You may play 1 to 3 cards from your hands. Place each card one by one on 3x3 game board. You may freely rotate and flip your cards before you place them. It is possible to overlay on top of previous ones. Once you are done, let your roommate know.

  2. Claim Styles: Check for the styles that have been claimed by your roommate. If you were successful in getting rid of all the styles, remove all player markers from the claim board. If you find any styles left on the board, you lose immediately.

Check if you made any new styles. A style is made when there are three wallpapers in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line sharing a same element. The element can be either a color or a pattern. Then, claim each style you've made by placing your marker on the claim board. If you have not made a single style, you lose immediately.

Anytime during the game, if you can put three markers on the board, you win immediately.

The key to the game is to break the styles made by your roommate and to claim new styles for yourself.

  3. Draw New Cards: Draw a card per a style you've made this turn. There is a maximum hand limit of three. You cannot draw more once your hand is full. Then, pass your turn.

Player hands are opened for everyone. You can see the hands of your roommate at any time during the game.

Variant: If you wish to play more intensive game, use hourglass to set time limit for "Play Cards" phase.

Special Cards

Each deck has 9 special cards which give a little variation to the game. These cards have small icons which represent each player. The rectangular cards have rectangular icons and the diagonal cards have diagonal icons. These icons don't have any elements; they work differently. If there are special cards played on the board, you must cover all the icons up in your current turn. If you fail to do so, you lose immediately.

Variant: If it is your first game or if you wish to make the game easier, play without all the special cards.

V. End of the game

Players will win or lose in various conditions. When a condition is met, the game ends.

Win the duel

  • Successfully claimed three styles at a single turn.

Lose the duel

  • There is one or more player markers of your opponent remained on the board after your turn.
  • Could not claim a single style at your turn.
  • Failed to cover up special icons of your opponent and ended your turn.

If you had played all the cards and have not ended the duel? It's a tie! What a good rival you are.
