Description

This expansion adds new Unit and Building cards, along with a new type of card: legendary Artifacts. These cards are shuffled together with the Unit cards. Unlike Units, however, legendary Artifacts are not affected by aging.

Important. Always add all the cards of this expansion. This expansion may be used only with the base game or together with the Beyond the Gates expansion.

Contents

  • 26 Unit cards
  • 18 legendary Artifact cards
  • 21 Building cards

Adding the Units and Artifacts

During setup, shuffle the 26 new Unit cards and the 18 legendary Artifact cards into the Unit cards of the base game.

Adding the Buildings

Without the Beyond the Gates expansion: each Monarch receives all 5 Building cards of the base game. Then randomly select 2 of the 3 new Buildings (Inn, Sawmill and Royal Palace) and give each Monarch the cards of these 2 Buildings.

With the Beyond the Gates expansion: each Monarch receives the 4 Building cards of the base game (Mine, Tavern, Temple and Central Square). Then take all 10 Building tiles of the full edition and shuffle them. Randomly select 3 of the 10 Building tiles and give each Monarch the cards of these 3 Buildings.

In both cases, each Monarch therefore starts the game with 7 identical Buildings available in the Construction phase.

Legendary Artifact Card

Anatomy of a legendary Artifact card:

  1. Legendary Artifact symbol
  2. Artifact name
  3. Artifact property (an ability activated in a given phase, or resources produced)
  4. Legend points earned at the end of the game
  5. Number of copies of the card in the game

Artifact Recruitment

Legendary Artifact cards can be obtained from the card deck in exactly the same way as Unit cards.

Artifact Deployment

Legendary Artifacts are not Units, but they are brought into play in the same way as Unit cards.

Where Artifacts go. In a Monarch's Kingdom, legendary Artifact cards are placed separately from Unit cards. They are first placed face down and turned face up after their cost has been paid.

A Monarch may have any number of legendary Artifact cards in their Kingdom. Their number does not affect the permitted number of Unit slots (4 or 5).

Deployment cost. For each legendary Artifact card deployed, the Monarch must pay 1 Gold, plus 1 Gold for each Artifact already deployed in their Kingdom. The first Artifact therefore costs 1 Gold, the second 2 Gold, the third 3 Gold, and so on.

Example: Christine wants to deploy the Bottomless Purse. As it is her first Artifact, its cost is 1 Gold (1 for this Artifact + 0 for the Artifacts deployed earlier).

A Monarch cannot discard an Artifact already deployed in order to reduce the cost of a new Artifact.

As with Unit cards, if a Monarch cannot pay the cost of an Artifact deployed during this turn, that Artifact must immediately be sent to the discard pile. The Monarch chooses which of the cards to pay for, and which to discard, when bringing cards into play.

Deploying more than one Artifact in a single turn. When several Artifacts are deployed during the same turn, they are deployed one after another, and this affects the deployment cost of each subsequent Artifact.

Example: Christine has already deployed the Bottomless Purse in her Kingdom. She now wants to deploy the Magnificent Grove and the Cursed Crown from her hand. The deployment cost of these two new Artifacts is 5 Gold in total, since they are her 2nd (2 Gold) and 3rd (3 Gold) Artifacts.

Keeping a card. A Monarch may choose to keep a legendary Artifact card after the Deployment phase is over, for the next round. A Monarch may still keep only one card until the next round, whether it is a Character or an Artifact.

Artifact abilities. Once a Monarch has deployed a legendary Artifact in their Kingdom, they may use its property, whether it is an ability activated in a given phase or resources produced, in exactly the same way as for Unit and Building cards.

Example: during the Wars phase, the Shield of Power gives this Kingdom +2 strength, in addition to the bonuses received from the General and the Barracks.

Artifacts and Aging

Legendary Artifact cards are not affected by time. They do not receive Age tokens. Once deployed, they remain active until the end of the game.

Artifacts and the End of the Game

At the end of the game, the Legend points shown on the Artifact cards in the Monarchs' Kingdoms are added to the Legend points earned during the game, and to the Legend points for the Buildings constructed.

Example: at the end of the game, 2 Artifacts in Christine's Kingdom earn her 3 Legend points (1 + 2), which she adds to her total.

Reminder

Character Death

Characters leave the game only in the Aging phase, if their card has at least one Age token.

Simultaneous Deployment

Normally, Monarchs deploy their cards in their Kingdoms simultaneously. If an irreconcilable disagreement arises between Monarchs, the one with more Legend points acts first. In case of a tie, the one with more Gold acts first. If the tie persists, the order is determined at random.

Resolving Abilities

Each activated ability takes into account all the symbols and affects all the Characters available in the Kingdom at the end of the phase. For example, if an ability adds an Age token to "your other Characters", the effect also applies to the new Characters deployed during this round.

Character Ability Descriptions

Shapeshifter. Place 1 Age token on the new Character. If it has a Deployment-phase ability, that ability applies in the same round.

Grand Architect / Dryad. You may exchange resources any number of times, at a rate of 1 for 1.

Healer. In the Aging phase, add 1 Age token to a Character that did not leave the game thanks to the Healer. The Healer may leave itself in the game.

Fortune Teller / Kraken. The ability of these cards takes into account all Characters leaving the game in the Aging phase, including the Fortune Teller and the Kraken themselves.

Shadow. You may reactivate the ability of a Character you deployed in your Kingdom in this round.

Titan. For a Building you deploy in your Kingdom using the Titan, you pay neither the terrain cost nor the construction cost of the Building.

Ogre. The base Gold you always receive in the Revenue phase is also added to the Ogre's strength. The Ogre's minimum strength is therefore 4.

Monkey / Imp / Lackey. When you deploy these Characters, you do not spend Gold but gain it. The Gold gained can be used immediately to pay for the deployment of other Characters.

Golem. If, after deploying the Golem, a Monarch upgrades their first Building to level 2, the additional slot for a 5th Character appears in their Kingdom only in the next round. In the current round, the number of Characters remains 4.

Court Jester. The cost of the legendary Artifact deployed by the Court Jester is 0, regardless of the number of Artifacts in your Kingdom.

Standard-Bearer. Check whether the condition of each ability is met. If at least 1 Character with a cost of 3 or more is in your Kingdom, you receive both rewards when you deploy the Standard-Bearer: 2 Gold and 2 Legend points.

Relic of Fertility. Example. If during the Wars phase the Relic of Fertility is in the top row, and your Kingdom produces 2 meat and 3 jars, you receive 5 Legend points. If the Relic of Fertility is in the bottom row, you receive no Legend points.

Temple. You may pay for both levels of this Building with the required number of gems, or with the required amount of gold.

Port. Example. If your Kingdom produces jars, you receive 2 Legend points, regardless of the number of jars produced.

Abbey. Example. If your Kingdom produces 2 jars, 1 meat and 1 gem, the Abbey brings you 4 Legend points.
