Card Types and Anatomy (Tipy karet)

Event cards. Cards that players fight over during a round. Only one is on the table at a time, and that is the one currently being contested. The player who wins three event cards wins the whole game. Each event has an ability that applies only at the moment it is contested.

Character cards. Cards a player uses to fight for the event card. Players hold them in hand and play them onto the table.

  • Strength: Abilities may change strength, but strength can never drop below zero. The strength of a player's played character cards is added together.
  • Ability: If a card has the ability icon (a lightning bolt), its ability resolves only once, when the card is played. If it does not, the ability applies for as long as the card stays in play.
  • Faction: Cards may (but need not) belong to one of three factions: Kimonizti (red), Střevovjěkové (green) and Spicovatelé (blue). Faction names are kept in Czech.

The sample character card "Zmikund" shows the callouts for strength (SÍLA), the card's label (BAVRA FRAGCE, as printed), and the ability (ZHOPNOST). Its ability text reads, in translation: "You may replace any played card with Zmikund." (Reading from the scan; the caption is small.)

The sample event card "Příchot vejrozjestů" shows the ability icon and its effect, which reads, in translation: "You may discard 1 Střevovjěk (green card) from your hand and draw 2 cards."

The sample character card "Huz" shows its strength and faction marker. Its small ability caption is not legible at the scan resolution and is not transcribed here; its effect is described in the Example of a Turn below.

Setup (Příprava hry)

  1. Shuffle the event deck and the character deck.
  2. Each player draws 5 character cards. Nobody shows them to the others.
  3. Turn over the top event card and resolve its ability, if it has one.
  4. The oldest player receives the starting-player token.

Goal (Cíl hry)

In each round, the goal is to have the strongest team on the table so as to win the event card on the table. A team's strength is the sum of the strengths of that player's played character cards.

The layout sample shows a three-player game after the first character cards are played: the event deck and the character deck sit in the middle, with a discard pile for discarded characters, and each player's played cards are placed in front of them.

Round Flow (Průběh kola)

  1. All players place one character card face down in front of them ("secretly").
  2. Turn over all the secret cards at once. Card effects are resolved starting with the player holding the starting-player token and proceeding clockwise.
  3. The player holding the starting-player token takes the first turn.

4. Turn (Tah)

When it is your turn, you must take one of the following actions:

a) Play one or more cards from your hand onto the table. Their abilities resolve one at a time, in the order they were played.

b) Wait, if your team is stronger than every other player's team. This also applies if you have no cards left in hand but your team has the same strength as the strongest team.

c) Discard one card from your hand to the discard pile. The card's ability is not played.

d) Concede the event. Discard all of your played cards to the discard pile. You can no longer have any character cards in front of you, but other players' abilities may still affect you (for example, discarding cards from your hand). When character cards are moved, you are skipped. Cards left in your hand stay with you for the next round.

  1. After your turn ends, play continues with the next player clockwise.

  2. The round ends when only one player remains in play. That player wins the event card and keeps it. All played character cards go to the discard pile. Cards in hand stay in hand.

  3. The starting-player token passes clockwise.

  4. Each player draws 2 character cards. A player who finished the previous round without a card takes one extra card, so that everyone has at least 3 cards at the start of the round.

  5. Turn over a new card from the event deck and place it in the middle of the table. Resolve its ability, if it has one.

  6. A new round begins; continue again from step 1.

Ability icon rule (Schopnosti karet). Abilities of cards with the ability icon (lightning bolt) are resolved only when the card is played. If a card reaches the table some other way (for example, by being moved), its ability is not resolved again. The exception is a card whose ability has not yet been resolved, which is the case at its first "secret" play.

Trap (Plihcha)

If all players have equally strong teams, but nobody has any more cards in hand, the event card falls through: it is placed at the bottom of the event deck, and the round ends.

If you find yourself in a situation where all teams have the same strength and nobody but you has cards, but you cannot win the round, you may decide that the event card falls through and the round ends.

End of Game (Konec hry)

The game is won by the player who first gets three event cards.

Example of a Turn (Příklad tahu)

Printed as "PŘIKLAT TAHU".

There are three players. The player to your left (L) has Kalera IV. in their team; the player to your right (R) has Hucák. You decide to play Kefka. After playing him, you activate his ability, discard him to the discard pile, and take a new character card in his place. It is Huz! Kalera IV. moves from player L to player R, but their ability is not activated again. You do not want to play another card, so your turn ends.

Questions (Dotazy?)

Printed as "DOTASI?".

Q: When Komnský is played, is he counted when counting writers? A: Yes, of course. The same is true for Čalfa, K.H. Máchy and the others.

Q: Must I always play the first "secret" card of the round, even if I do not plan to keep playing? A: Yes, you must; accept it.

Q: Must I show my fellow players how many cards I have in hand? A: Yes, you must; accept it.

Q: What happens if the character cards in the deck run out? A: All discarded character cards are shuffled together to form a new deck.

Q: What if I still have no answer? A: If you are stuck, see the tips and tricks at www.opraski.cz.
