On Mars
Do I need to know base On Mars to play Alien Invasion, and do its components mix into the competitive game?

Yes, the expansion assumes you know the base game and uses most of its components in Chapter 1. None of its new components are added to the base competitive mode; they are used only by the expansion's chapters.
