Short Game Overview
The players compete against each other in 9 sports. Depending on their results they receive performance cards and medals, which are worth points. Whoever has the most points after 9 sports wins the game.
Setup
- Shuffle all performance cards and deal each player 6 of them face down as a hand. Place the remaining performance cards as a face-down pile on the table.
- Shuffle all sport cards and place them as a face-down pile next to the pile of performance cards.
- Place the medals as a supply next to the 2 piles.
- The youngest player becomes start player and receives the start player card.
(The setup illustration for 4 players shows: each player's hand, the remaining performance cards, all sport cards, all medals, and the start player card.)
Course of Play
The game consists of 9 sports. Each sport proceeds in the same way, in the following order:
- Turn over a new sport card
- Play or withdraw performance card(s)
- Award performance cards and medals
1. Turn Over a New Sport Card
Turn over the top card of the pile of sport cards. The player with the start player card may now choose whether he wants to play this sport or postpone it. If he chooses to postpone, he slides the sport card, face up, under the face-down pile and turns over a new sport card. This second sport must be played. If the top card of the pile is already face up (because it was postponed earlier), that sport must be played.
2. Play and Withdraw Performance Cards
This phase consists of a number of rounds in which each player has a turn once. Starting with the start player and then clockwise, each player does the following:
- Play performance card(s); or
- Withdraw.
Playing performance card(s)
- If a player decides to play performance card(s), he must follow the rules of the current sport card. He lays the relevant performance card(s) from his hand face up in front of him on the table. He may not play more performance cards than the sport card indicates.
Withdrawing
- If he cannot play performance cards according to the applicable rules, or does not want to, he must withdraw. After he has withdrawn, he can no longer play performance cards during this sport.
End of a round When all players have had one turn, a round is over. A new round begins. Starting with the start player and then clockwise, all players who have not withdrawn may again choose whether they want to play card(s) or withdraw.
Note: some sport cards indicate that a performance card must be turned over at the beginning of a round.
A player may keep playing performance cards for as long as he can or wants to. He is not obliged to withdraw when all other players have already done so.
3. Award Performance Cards and Medals
Depending on the moment at which a player withdraws (the number of players who had already withdrawn before him), he receives a number of performance cards and/or medals and/or the start player card (see the table below).
Order of withdrawal
| Players | First | Second | Third | Fourth | Fifth | Sixth | Seventh |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 performance cards, bronze medal, start player card | 1 performance card, silver medal | gold medal | ||||
| 4 | 3 performance cards, start player card | 2 performance cards, bronze medal | 1 performance card, silver medal | gold medal | |||
| 5 | 3 performance cards, start player card | 2 performance cards | 1 performance card, bronze medal | silver medal |
When all players have withdrawn and the gold medal has been awarded, the sport is over. The next sport begins.
Note: the only way for a player to receive new performance cards is to withdraw early during a sport.
End of the Game
The game ends after the ninth sport has been resolved. The players now count their points. A gold medal is worth 4 points, a silver medal 2 points and a bronze medal 1 point. The player with the most points wins the game. In case of a tie, the tied player with the most performance cards remaining wins.
Rules for 2 Players
The rules of the basic game apply, with the exception of the following:
- The player who withdraws first receives 1 performance card and gives the bronze medal to the other player. He may, however, simply continue playing afterwards, after the other player has first had his turn.
- The player who withdraws second receives 2 performance cards and gives the silver medal to the other player. He may, however, simply continue playing afterwards, after the other player has first had his turn.
- The player who withdraws third receives 3 performance cards and gives the gold medal to the other player. The sport is then over.
"World Record" Variant
If a player wins the gold medal in a sport with a star in the upper right corner and he then has no performance cards in hand, he sets a world record. He may keep the sport card. At the end of the game it is worth 2 points.
