Components

The expansion adds the following components:

  • 3 new chronicles (36 cards in total):
    • "Famished" (short chronicle)
    • "At a Wave of the Hand" (long chronicle)
    • "Old Bones" (long chronicle)
  • 15 illness cards
  • 20 incident cards, "Hide and Seek with Death"
  • 6 mission cards (3 short, 3 long)
  • 8 skeleton figures
  • 1 "Severed Hand" token
  • 1 "Nexus" token
  • 4 seal tokens

Setup

When playing with this expansion, during setup shuffle the illness cards and place them face down in a stack next to the main game board.

Illness Cards

In the new chronicles and incident cards, rangers may fall victim to illnesses, which are a kind of supernatural evil. An illness is a painful condition, a mysterious affliction that takes hold of the body and soul of the rangers.

When a ranger is afflicted by an illness, they must draw the top card of the illness stack. The ranger reads the card's effect and places it face up next to their player board. The effect described on the card applies for as long as the card remains with the ranger.

Accumulating Illness

Each ranger can have only one illness card. If a ranger must take a second illness card, the previous card is discarded and replaced by the new one, and the ranger reduces their health (heart icon) by 1.

Removing Illness

A ranger may remove an illness card, and also fully restore their health, by performing the "Call to the Community" action in settlement 6.

Important: some cards also allow the ranger to remove an illness card. Such a card will contain the relevant text.

Missions and Incidents

The expansion adds 6 new mission cards, which can be used together with the 20 new incident cards "Hide and Seek with Death".

All new missions can also be played with the base game chronicles, provided their duration matches: short missions with short chronicles, and long missions with long chronicles.

Softer Conditions

Because the expansion makes the game harder, you may use a softer variant of the rules, which protects against an instant loss when the protection or prestige level drops to 0.

If the prestige level or the protection level equals 8: all possibilities to raise that level are skipped. Players do not receive any extra bonuses.

If the prestige level or the protection level equals 0: all possibilities to lower that level are skipped. Players do not receive any extra penalties.

When the adventure token stops on a chronicle space: immediately check the prestige and protection levels.

  • If the prestige level or the protection level is 0, the game ends immediately.
  • If the prestige level is 8, receive 1 gold.
  • If the protection level is 8, remove an incident card from any settlement to the discard pile.

Reminders

Adventure Token

  • The adventure token always stops on a chronicle space, even if the die shows the double-arrow face.
  • The adventure token may not remain on a chronicle space for two turns in a row, even if the die shows the circle face. In that case, move the token one step to the right, onto an incident space.
  • At the start of the game the adventure token is placed on a chronicle space. Because it must move in the first round, the first chapter of the chronicle opens only when the token completes a lap.

Gold

Gold is a special resource. Gold does not replace other resources, and it cannot be used in their place. However, gold can be exchanged by performing the "Call to the Community" action in settlement 1.
