Short Chronicle

Opening: It's Rats! (ネズミだ!)

The governorate was peaceful as always today. The castle was a pleasant place to live. The neighbours were getting along cheerfully and there were no problems. But a few rats had begun to cause trouble in the dark of the storehouse. It was not very serious, but as a precaution, the Rangers decided to deal with the matter at once.

Immediate action (blue helmet icon): To confirm that the rats have been wiped out, you go to the Fortress.

  • Success: Thanks to your strategic thinking, although many rats remain, you managed to remove the majority of them. (Feather icon with a green plus.)
  • Failure: Overwhelmed by the rats, you are utterly defeated. (Yellow banner icon with a red minus.)

Chronicle 1: Enough! (もういやだ!)

You had worked hard to exterminate the rats, but they kept multiplying like wildfire. At night the sound of scurrying claws echoed constantly through the castle, and no one could sleep soundly. You decided to tackle the problem of the rats.

  • All Rangers lose 1 Health. (Heart icon.)
  • Discard 1 Provision of your choice (golden bread icon). If you cannot, lose 1 (yellow banner icon).

Immediate action (blue helmet icon): Two Rangers must take part in the operation against the rats and supervise their extermination. Each makes a Profession test and applies the following effect:

  • Success: Place 1 Status token (green check mark) on the Status space.
  • Failure: Nothing happens.

Chronicle 2: Poison! (毒だ!)

Taking the situation seriously, the administrator convened a crisis-management council about the fight against the vermin. Traps were prepared, and the castle gates were firmly shut. Everyone was told to lock the rats in.

Immediate action: All Rangers go to the Fortress.

Immediate action (purple book icon): One Ranger must supervise the setting of the traps.

  • 2 Successes: Place 1 Status token on the Status space.
  • 0–1 Successes: That Ranger loses 1 (yellow banner icon).

Immediate action (hammer icon): Another Ranger must set a mousetrap.

  • 2 Successes: Place 1 Status token on the Status space.
  • 0–1 Successes: That Ranger loses 1 (grey block icon).

Chronicle 3: The Pied Piper Arrives! (笛吹き男が来た!)

Inside the castle everyone was on edge. Then, suddenly, a wandering Pied Piper appeared at the castle gates. He claimed that with his music he could drive the rats away forever, of course, if they piled up money for him.

Temporary action (until a Chronicle card is turned over): Pay money to the Piper (gold coin icon with 2).

  • If one Ranger pays the Piper 2 Treasure: Remove the subsequent Chronicle card B (orange B banner on the card picture).
  • If a Chronicle card is turned over before money is paid to the Piper: Remove the subsequent Chronicle card A (blue A banner on the card picture).

Chronicle 4: Trapped! (罠にかけた!)

The melody of the Piper's flute echoed through the castle courtyard. As he played, a huge swarm of rats gathered around him. Now the Rangers must lead this small group out to the exit.

Medallion icon with a "?" badge: If you have obtained 0 (brown round token icon), you are defeated.

If you are not defeated, immediate action (hammer icon): Each Ranger must lead the swarm of rats to the exit.

The number of (brown round token icon) obtained determines how many Rangers are needed and how many Successes each must gain:

  • 3 (brown round token icon): One Ranger must gain 2 Successes.
  • 2 (brown round token icon): Two Rangers must each gain 2 Successes.
  • 1 (brown round token icon): Two Rangers must each gain 3 Successes.

Each time you pay 1 Status token (green check mark), you may re-roll the dice once.

  • If the Profession test succeeds: Victory.
  • Otherwise: Defeat.

Chronicle 5: Take Control! (制圧せよ!)

The rats are everywhere! Every part of the castle is swarming with them, so we decided to smoke them out. We leave only one escape route, the one leading straight to the river. Only one of us or of them will remain here!

Immediate action (dark sword icon): One Ranger must light several smoke bombs. Requires 3 Successes.

Immediate action (blue helmet icon): Another Ranger must hold back the swarm. Requires 3 Successes.

  • In one of the two tests above (optional, but only after the dice have been rolled for both tests), gain 1 Success for each (brown round token icon).

  • Each time you remove 1 Status token (green check mark), you may re-roll the dice once.

  • If both tests succeed: Victory.

  • Otherwise: Defeat.

Chronicle 6: Victory (勝利)

It was a hard battle. But you could not allow the foolish rats to rule the castle! You drove them out. Bravo!

Chronicle 7: Defeat (敗北)

Worst of all! Despite your efforts, the rats took everything from you. Through their power you were driven out of the castle. You must report this dreadful situation to your superior...

The End (おわり)

Transcriber's Notes

  • Icons. The chronicle prints few icon labels, so icons are described as drawn and the reviewer should check them against the base game's icon key. Heart = Health. Golden bread = Provision. Octagonal gold coin = Treasure (the text calls it カネ, money). Green check mark = Status token (the text calls it ステータス). The yellow banner, feather, grey block, brown round token and gold medallion with a "?" badge are not labelled in the text.
  • Profession symbols. The four Immediate action symbols (blue helmet, purple book, hammer, sword) are not named in this chronicle. They are presumably the base game's Profession symbols; confirm which is which against the Fortress symbols.
  • Opening badge. The opening card shows a small scroll icon with the number 5. The chronicle does not explain it, so it is not transcribed as a rule.
  • Source typo. The Poison! text prints a stray fragment "た。" after "閉ざされた。". It is omitted in the translation.
  • Layout. Each numbered Chronicle card has a picture on one side and its text on the other; the text is given under the card number. The chronicle prints no setup section.
  • Omitted. The designer, illustrator and colourist credits and the back cover are not transcribed.
