How to Play
In Oh No! Volcano, players take turns playing cards and performing actions to be the first to collect all their treasure, all the while avoiding fiery balls hurtling down the mountain.
On Your Turn
- Play one Climber Card from your hand or one Gear Card from above your Player Board. Place it face-up in front of you.
- Perform all the actions on the card in the order shown, from top to bottom. These actions are:
- Move
- Place Boulder Blocker
- Drop a Lava Ball
- Discard the played card. Climber Cards go into the discard pile on your Player Board. Gear Cards go into a discard pile next to the Gear Card draw pile.
- If you played a Climber Card this turn, draw a new Climber Card into your hand. If there are no cards left to draw, do nothing. If you played a Gear Card this turn, do nothing.
- Play now passes to the player to your left.
Play continues like this until one player has filled all the Treasure spaces on their Player Board (see Treasure spaces), or if a player has run out of any cards to play.
Gear Cards
Players do not start the game with Gear Cards, they are collected when one of their Explorers is knocked off the board by a Lava Ball.
When collected, Gear Cards are placed above your Player Board. You are allowed a maximum of 3.
Gear Cards may be played instead of Climber Cards.
Actions
Move
Move your Explorer Pawns up the mountain in order to collect treasures!
- Move your Explorer Pawn with the same letter up the Volcano board. Move it up to the number of spaces shown in the white diamond (e.g. a card marked "C, 3" moves Pawn C 3 spaces).
- If a question mark appears, then you choose which lettered pawn to move that number of spaces (e.g. a card marked "?, 4" moves either pawn A, B or C, 4 spaces).
- If an Explorer Pawn is not already on the Volcano board, you must start your move on any open space on the bottom row.
- An Explorer Pawn may only move to the next adjacent space up, left or right. It may never move down.
- Explorer Pawns may not move through other pawns or Boulder Blockers. They must move around them.
- Remember, you can always move an Explorer Pawn less than the full amount of spaces. You may even choose not to move your Explorer Pawn at all, and on very rare occasions may not be able to.
Treasure Spaces
If a player's Explorer Pawn ends its move on a Treasure space (Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire) the player may collect the matching Treasure Token from the treasure pile and place it on the matching Treasure space on their Player Board. They may not take Treasure Tokens that do not match an open Treasure space on their Player Board.
Note: If the Treasure space is an emerald treasure space at the top of the Volcano, your Explorer is automatically returned to base camp. Place the Explorer Pawn on your Player Boards matching letter.
Cave Entrance Spaces
There are two of these shortcuts. If an Explorer Pawn ends its move on a Cave Entrance, it may immediately be placed on its matching Cave Exit above it on the board. However, a pawn may not move up to the Exit space if it is occupied by another pawn.
Place a Boulder Blocker
Place a Boulder Blocker to help protect your Explorer Pawns!
- Take a Boulder Blocker and place it between 2 spaces.
- If all Boulder Blockers are being used, you must remove one carefully from the Volcano Board and place it in a new location.
Note:
- You MAY NOT place it in a space occupied by an Explorer Pawn, Blocker Boulder, Cave Entrance space, or Treasure space.
- You MAY NOT place it on the top or bottom row of the Volcano.
Drop a Lava Ball
Drop the Lava Ball down the Volcano and hope it misses your Explorers!
- Take a Lava Ball and drop it into the numbered lava chute as indicated on the card.
- If the Lava Ball makes it to the bottom of the Volcano board without knocking any Explorer Pawns down, nothing happens. You have all survived the danger.
BUT... If one or more Explorer Pawns are knocked off the Volcano board by the Lava Ball, do the following:
- The owners must place their fallen Explorer Pawns on their Player Boards.
- In turn order, draw 1 Gear Card for each Explorer Pawn knocked off and place it above your Player Board. If the Gear Card draw pile is empty, shuffle the Gear discard pile to make a new one.
- If you have more than 3 total Gear Cards, you must discard down to 3 cards.
Note:
- If a pawn is hit, but doesn't fully fall off its original space, it has survived. Immediately place it upright in its space.
- If a falling pawn hits another pawn and knocks it down, it is still considered to have been hit by the Lava Ball.
- If an Explorer Pawn falls and lands on any space other than its original one, it is still considered knocked off and is placed on the player board.
- If a Lava Ball gets stuck for any reason, remove it and place it in the box at the base of the Volcano.
The "Dropping a Lava Ball" action is complete.
Winning the Game
As soon as any player has a Treasure Token on every Treasure space on their Player Board, they immediately win the game!
On the very rare occasion that a player has no Climber Cards left or Gear Card to play, then the game ends immediately. Each player then scores 3 points per Emerald treasure on their Player Board, 2 points per Ruby treasure, and 1 point per Sapphire treasure.
The player with the most points wins!
