Setup
- Shuffle the map cards. Deal each player a hand of 2, then deal 2 faceup next to each other in the middle of the table. Place the deck off to the side.
- For your first game, flip all 6 species cards to the A side and lay them out where everyone can see them. After your first game, individually select either the A or B side for each species (or randomize them).
- Each player takes a player aid and a set of 7 species tokens with the same symbols at the bottom. With 4-5 players, each player returns 1 Flora token to the box.
- The player who most recently made an interesting discovery goes first.
Overview
In Oddland, players build a shared map and mark territories where they find new species. Place your cards and tokens tactically to earn the most points (leaf icon) for each species!
The Map
Map cards you play are added to the map in the middle. Each card has 4 spaces with 1 of 4 terrain types.
- A. Forest
- B. Shore
- C. Water
- D. Mountain
Territories
Orthogonally adjacent spaces of the same terrain type make up a territory. Territories that share a border are called neighboring territories.
- A. Size 4 Territory
- B. Size 1 Territory
- C. Neighboring Territories
Species
The species cards show how each species token scores at the end of the game.
- A. Species Name
- B. Species Token
- C. Scoring Effect
- D. Visual Example
- E. Side A or B
- F. Solo Score Modifier
Example card shown: Begator — 2 points per space in neighboring territories, with a worked example on a sample map and a solo score modifier of -3.
Player Turns
Players take turns in clockwise order. Each turn has 3 steps:
- Play a map card
- Place a species token
- Draw a map card
1. Play Map Card
Reveal 1 map card from your hand and add it to the map, following these rules:
- At least 1 space on your card must share an edge with a space on the map.
- You may cover up to 2 empty spaces on the map (not 3 or 4).
- You may never cover any species tokens on the map.
2. Place Species Token
Next, place 1 of your species tokens on the map, following these rules:
You must place your species in 1 of the 4 spaces on the map card you just added.
You may NOT place your species in any territory where there is already a species token (of any type, belonging to any player).
3. Draw Map Card
At the end of your turn, draw back up to 2 map cards. On your last turn of the game, skip this step.
Game End
The game ends once each player has placed all their species tokens. Use the scoreboard to record how many points each player scores for each species. Add up each player's total score to determine the winner.
If there's a tie, whoever has the species token in the largest territory wins. If still tied, check the next-largest territory, and so on.
Scoring Flora
The A side of the Flora card does not have a scoring effect. When playing with Flora A, Flora tokens can be used to stall or block territories, but do not score points on their own.
Tips & Reminders
- You must place a species token every turn. If you can't legally do so, you must move your map card so that you can.
- You can place any species token on any terrain type (even if it will score 0). Species that can score terrain outside their territory (e.g. Owloose A or B) do not need to be in that type of terrain to score.
- When playing a map card, you can connect territories that contain 2 or more species tokens. For scoring purposes, each species occupies the combined territory.
- Adjacent spaces share an edge (not just a corner). Surrounding spaces include the space itself, spaces adjacent to it, and spaces that share a corner with it.
- When scoring a species' territory, row, column, diagonals, or surrounding spaces, count the species' own space if it meets the scoring criteria. (This includes Pangeroo A, which always counts itself.)
- With 1-3 players, each player has multiple Flora tokens. If Flora have a scoring effect, score each of your tokens individually and write down the total.
