90 cards (30 each in the colours blue, green, orange)
A pen and a sheet of paper are required to record the score.
Getting started
Have a pen and paper ready. Shuffle the cards face down. Each player receives 3 cards. Hold your cards so that only you can see the numbers. The remaining cards are put into a draw pile, face down, in the middle of the table.
Aim of the game
The player with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
Order of play
The youngest player begins. Each player takes turns in a clockwise direction. The game consists of several rounds.
A round is played as follows: On your turn, choose one of your cards to lay down either in front of you or in front of one of the other players. Then, draw one card from the draw pile so that you have three cards again in your hand. Now it's the next player's turn, who also selects one of his cards to lay down and replaces it with one from the draw pile before the next player begins his turn. Play continues, one player after the other.
The cards lying before a player form his kitty. At the beginning of a round a player can lay any one of his cards from his hand either in front of himself or in front of another player to form his or another player's kitty.
If there is already more than one card in a player's kitty, he has two options:
- He can expand a kitty of his choice: The player lays down one of the cards from his hand next to an existing card.
- Or, he can change the value of a kitty of his choice: The player lays down one of the cards from his hand on top of an existing card of the same colour (see example), and increases or decreases the value of the kitty.
NOTE: If at any time a player's kitty contains two cards or stacks of cards that show the same number, they must be immediately put into the same stack! This contracts the size of a player's kitty.
NOTE: Make sure that all three colours are in your kitty. If a player has only two or less colours in his kitty, he does not receive any points!
Example
Anna plays the green 14. She plays the card on the green 5 in Marie's kitty. In Marie's kitty, the green 14 appears twice; both stacks of cards with the green 14 are merged into one stack. By playing the green 14 in Marie's kitty, she has contracted Marie's kitty to 4 open cards! Anna could also have laid her green 7 on Marie's green 5 or 14, since they share the same colour.
End of a round
The round is over when:
- Either a player's kitty contains 6 stacks (of cards) or ...
- There are no cards left in the draw pile and no one has any cards left in his hand.
Evaluation
At the end of a round each player that has all three colours in his kitty adds up all the numbers on the uppermost card of each stack.
In the standard game, points are recorded for all players.
All cards are reshuffled and distributed among the players as described above. The player to the left of the previous player to have started first gets to begin.
End of game
The game is over as soon as one or more players has 150 points. The player with the most points wins.
Game variation for the thick skinned
Only the player with the most points may record his points. All the others finish the round empty handed! The game is over as soon as one or more players has 100 points. The player with the most points wins.
Scoring example
Marie played the blue 4 in Claire's kitty. Claire now has 6 cards in her kitty. The round is over and points are recorded.
- Marie has 39 points (4+14+6+15).
- Unfortunately, Anna doesn't have all three colours in her kitty: Blue is missing! Anna doesn't get any points.
- Claire has 28 points (1+12+6+3+2+4).
In the standard game, both Marie and Claire get to record their points. In the game variation for "tough customers", only Marie gets to record her points!
