What's New?

The printed booklet's "Neuerungen" (What's New) box lists three additions:

  • There are new selection rules because of the larger number of order cards (see "Setup" and "Alternative Selection Method").
  • The new effect "Feed" has been introduced (see "Feed").
  • There is a new Martial Law wound effect (see "Martial Law Wounds").

Quick Overview

(The booklet's "Kurzübersicht" summary, reproduced in full.)

1. Combat Phase. All your minions must attack the other players. After you have carried out the attacks, you must discard all your minions. You may use the wound effect of a Martial Law wound (only one wound effect in the whole turn).

2. Chain Phase. You may start a chain of cards by laying out one of your cards from your hand. You may only lay out further cards if they match the colors of the chain symbols. When you no longer want to lay out cards, your opponents may extend the chain with their own cards.

3. Claim Phase. You may claim cards from the common archives or from your two private archives by spending influence points.

4. Cleanup Phase. You must draw cards, and you may use the wound effect from the Nightfall base game (only one wound effect in the whole turn). All card effects end at the end of this phase.

Welcome to Martial Law!

In Martial Law, chaos rules. Humanity strikes back against the hideous monsters in its own way: with the energetic control typical of humans. But how do you control creatures whose very existence defies all logic?

Martial Law offers you completely new order cards with previously unknown effects and one central new mechanism: by feeding the chain effects, you unleash ever more powerful actions and creatures!

Components

Martial Law contains the following components:

  • 168 order cards (84 minions and 84 actions)
  • 15 wound cards
  • 24 draft cards

Overview

Martial Law is the first expansion in the Nightfall series. To play this expansion you need the Nightfall base game.

This rulebook describes only the new rules and new cards for Martial Law. The general game rules are those of the base game. Further information about the world of Nightfall can be found at www.nightfall.cc.

The oversized card dividers for sorting the new cards are already included in the base game box. There is also enough room in that box to store all the cards together.

Setup

The usual preparations are made, with the following change:

  1. From the Nightfall wounds, sort out 15 cards: 5 each of bite, burn and bleed wounds. Shuffle all 15 Martial Law wounds together with the remaining 45 wounds of the base game and place them in a face-down wound stack within reach of the players. Now count off 10 wounds from the wound stack per player (for example 30 wounds in a 3-player game) and place them face up back on the wound stack. During play you may not count how many wounds remain face up on the wound stack.

Martial Law Wounds

Martial Law has a new wound effect. Unlike the wounds of Nightfall, you use this effect in your combat phase, and it strengthens your minions in combat.

When you discard a Martial Law wound in your combat phase, one of your minions gets +1 strength. You may use this effect at any time during your combat phase, including after the defending player has chosen his minions to block.

You may use this effect repeatedly, as long as you pay the feed cost each time (see "Feed" in the next section). To pay the feed cost you may use any wound, it does not have to be a Martial Law wound. Each time you may choose a different minion of your own as the target of the effect.

You may still use only one wound effect within your entire turn, even if you hold several different wound effects in your hand. The others are not available to you in that turn.

EXAMPLE: Michael decides to fight Andreas with "Mad Jake" and Koi Jiang. He discards a Martial Law wound from his hand to give Koi Jiang +1 strength. Koi Jiang's total strength is now 4. Michael does without the option of using the wound effect once more by paying its feed cost.

Feed

Some of the cards in Martial Law have the text "FEED:". The feed effect lets you repeat certain chain or kicker text when you meet the conditions of the feed. After you have carried out the chain or kicker text once, free of cost as usual, you may repeat it with the help of the feed as often as you like, for as long as you can pay the cost and wish to.

If a kicker effect in the chain is not activated, you cannot repeat it with a feed either.

EXAMPLE: Michael's Jerome Carceri has a feed effect in its kicker text. Michael activates the kicker text and carries it out once, free of cost. Afterwards he can discard 1 card from his hand per the feed and carry out the kicker text again.

Alternative Selection Method

If you use all the draft cards of this expansion and of the base game, we recommend the following alternative selection method:

Each player receives 5 draft cards at the start. After you have chosen your private archives and 1 card each for the common archives as usual, the last 2 cards are removed from the game. Only then do you fill the common archives up to 8 cards.

Quick Start

If you would rather not select cards, each player receives one of the following sets for his private archives:

  • Koi Jiang + "Brynna & Taylor"
  • Roland LeFontaine + Irresistible Call
  • Chan Jiang + "Queen's Bishop"
  • Relentless Grinder + Forlorn Hope
  • Hysteria + All-Out Lunge

"Lone Hound" (Minion, Werewolf): IN PLAY: When "Lone Hound" attacks, discard 1 card or 1 wound from your hand. KICKER: Destroy 1 minion.

Jerome Carceri (Minion, Vampire): IN PLAY: Jerome Carceri stays in play until discarded. This card is protected from "destroy" effects. FEED: Discard 1 card. KICKER: 1 minion regains 2 health.

Chan Jiang (Minion, Vampire): IN PLAY: When Chan Jiang attacks, 1 minion of your choice must block it. KICKER: Take 1 minion card for free from an archive.

"Queen's Bishop" (Minion, Hunter): IN PLAY: When "Queen's Bishop" attacks, deal 2 damage to a minion. KICKER: Each player discards 1 card.

Relentless Grinder (Action): CHAIN: 1 player discards all cards except 5 and suffers 1 wound per discarded card. KICKER: Double all damage of the next card in the chain.

Forlorn Hope (Action): CHAIN: Exile 1 card from your discard pile. Deal damage to a player equal to the card's cost. KICKER: Deal damage to a minion equal to the card's cost.

Hysteria (Action): CHAIN: 1 minion deals damage equal to its strength to itself and its controller. KICKER: Deal 2 damage to a player.

All-Out Lunge (Action): CHAIN: Deal 1 damage to a player. FEED: Discard 2 cards. KICKER: 1 card in the chain carries out its kicker text.

Roland LeFontaine (Minion, Vampire): IN PLAY: When Roland LeFontaine attacks, draw 2 cards. KICKER: Draw 2 cards.

Irresistible Call (Action): YOUR CHAIN: Gain 3 influence points. FEED: Discard 2 cards. KICKER: Put Irresistible Call back on top of an archive of your choice.

Koi Jiang (Minion, Vampire): IN PLAY: All your minions get +1 strength. KICKER: The next card in the chain is not carried out (instead place that card on its owner's discard pile).

"Brynna & Taylor" (Minion, Hunter): IN PLAY: Draw 1 card at the end of your cleanup phase. "Brynna & Taylor" stay in play until destroyed. KICKER: 1 player takes 1 minion back into his hand.

Glossary

Variant

Selection in reverse order: During the selection of the order cards you pass the cards to the right. Perhaps you can get your neighbour to select cards for his private archives, through which you can add your own cards to the chains in the chain phase more easily.

The Lexicon of Martial Law

This section explains all the new terms used in the rules and on the cards of Martial Law.

Double Kicker: Comparable to a double cheeseburger. Watch for it in one of the following Nightfall expansions.

Feed: An effect through which, when you meet its condition, you can carry out a chain or kicker text several times in a row. Everything has its price.

The Minion Cards

Ahmad Hassan (promo card): If 1 friendly minion is destroyed and you have several copies of Ahmad Hassan in play, the effect is activated for each copy. You then deal 1 damage to a player for each Ahmad Hassan. You may choose a different player each time. The effect is also activated when Ahmad Hassan himself is destroyed. Through the kicker text of Ahmad Hassan, the kicker texts of all your following cards in the chain are activated, even if you did not play them in the matching kicker color. You do not carry out the kicker text of the affected cards immediately, but only when the respective card in the chain comes up. This kicker effect is not cumulative, so despite several copies of Ahmad Hassan in the chain, the kicker texts are carried out only once.

"Blind Rage" (promo card): If at the start of your turn you have no other minion in play, you must destroy "Blind Rage". Your combat phase begins only after this "in play" effect.

"Brynna & Taylor": In your cleanup phase you first draw 5 cards and carry out a wound effect of your choice. Only after that do you draw 1 additional card. You do not discard "Brynna & Taylor" at the end of your combat phase. If a creature is affected by the kicker effect, its owner takes it back into his hand; this need not be the player who currently controls the card.

Chan Jiang: When you carry out the kicker effect, you take the chosen card immediately. If the top card of the chosen archive is not a minion, you receive no card. You may choose any archive, including an opponent's.

"Lone Hound" (Einsamer Jäger): When the "Lone Hound" attacks, you may discard 1 order card or 1 wound from your hand.

Grotesque Revenant: The kicker effect gives you influence points only in your own turn. It only increases the number of influence points for discarded action cards from 1 to 2.

"Mad Jake": Through the "in play" effect a player receives 1 wound, even if the attack of "Mad Jake" is blocked by another minion. If the kicker effect is activated, the affected minion must be in play. If no opponent has a minion in play, you must choose one of your own minions. "Mad Jake" cannot choose itself, since it is not yet in play when the chain effect is carried out. (The printed booklet spells the name "Irrer Jack" in the last sentence of this entry and in the Martial Law wound example; "Mad Jake" is used throughout this transcription.)

Jerome Carceri: When Jerome Carceri is reduced to 0 health, you do not have to destroy it. It remains in play for the time being, until you have to discard it at the end of your combat phase (or through another effect). A minion cannot have more health than the red slashes on the card edge indicate.

Koi Jiang: Koi Jiang also increases her own strength by +1. If you have a copy of Koi Jiang in play, she has a strength of 4. This effect is cumulative.

"Queen's Bishop" (Königlicher Bote): When you attack with "Queen's Bishop", it first deals 2 damage to a minion. Only then does the defending player choose the minions that block the attack. If "Queen's Bishop" is the only minion in play, it destroys itself before it deals damage to the defender with its attack.

"Legion Ten": The "in play" effect applies only to blocking the damage of an attack. A single "Legion Ten" cannot block several attacking minions. The kicker effect affects all players, including you. If a player's deck is empty, he does not have to shuffle his discard pile and is not affected by this effect.

Maya Westermann: The "in play" effect gives you influence points only in your own turn. It triples the number of influence points for discarded action cards from 1 to 3.

Nian Jiang: When a minion leaves play, its owner takes it back and places it at the correct place, depending on the effect.

Roland LeFontaine: The abilities of a true gentleman are self-explanatory.

The Action Cards

All-Out Lunge (Alles oder nichts): You carry out the chain text the first time without paying the feed cost. Afterwards you may repeat the effect as often as you like, each time discarding 2 cards from your hand.

Bait and Switch (Lockvogeltaktik): You carry out the chain text the first time without paying the feed cost. Afterwards you may repeat the effect as often as you like, each time discarding 2 cards from your hand. The affected cards stay in the chain, may carry out their kicker text, and if they are minions, they come into play afterwards. When you assemble a new archive, you shuffle the cards face down so as not to influence their order. Afterwards the cards may be bought in the given order, without you being allowed to look at or change the exact order.

Desperate Measures (promo card): You carry out the chain text the first time without paying the feed cost. Afterwards you may repeat the effect as often as you like, provided that each time you suffer 1 wound. Through this effect only your minions are protected, not you yourself.

Forlorn Hope (Bauernopfer): If you have at least 1 order card in your discard pile, you must carry out the chain text. Wounds are not order cards. If you choose a starting minion or have no order card in your discard pile, no damage is dealt. The kicker text deals the same amount of damage, but a minion must suffer it.

Headshot (Kopfschuss): The affected minion must be in play. If no opponent has a minion in play, you must choose one of your own minions. If there are no minions in play at all, you must still suffer 1 wound and exile the Headshot.

Hysteria: If the minion is destroyed before it has suffered all of its damage, the remaining damage is lost. The damage that the player suffers from the chain text can be blocked by minions such as Vulko (from the base game). For the damage of the kicker effect you may choose another player as the target.

Irresistible Call (Unwiderstehlicher Ruf): The order of the cards in all archives may not be changed. You must buy the top card before you can reach a card lying beneath it.

Relentless Grinder (Unbarmherziger Schinder): The affected player discards cards until he holds only 5 cards in hand. If he has 5 or fewer cards in hand, he discards no cards and suffers no wounds. The kicker effect doubles the current damage points of the next card in the chain, not necessarily its printed damage.

Shining Cross (Glänzendes Kreuz): If you should discard only wounds from your discard pile, you must return one of them to your discard pile.

Silver Stake (Silberner Pflock): You must carry out as much of the chain text as possible, even if you have to choose your own minions in play.

Sweep and Clear (Stürmen & Sichern): You carry out the chain text the first time without paying the feed cost. Afterwards you may repeat the effect as often as you like, provided that each time you discard 2 cards from your hand. You may use the cards you have just drawn directly to pay the feed cost. If you carry out the kicker effect, each player chooses his affected minion himself.

Tactical Prep (Taktische Vorbereitung): After you have carried out the chain text of the card you drew, you still take it into your hand.

Bleak Resurrection (Trostlose Auferstehung): If you have at least 1 minion in your discard pile, you must bring it into play. You cannot carry out the chain and kicker texts of the chosen card, because that card was not part of the chain. Afterwards you may repeat the effect as often as you like, provided that each time you discard 1 card from your hand. You may pay the feed cost with a minion card and then choose that minion directly to bring it into play. The kicker text refers to the previous card in the chain, i.e. a red or blue card played after Bleak Resurrection. Caution: if the previous card destroyed your minions, you must exile them, even if you have just brought them back into play through the chain text of Bleak Resurrection!
