Setup
After the board is laid out and the armies are chosen, each player takes 3 plastic Monolith parts (Części Monolitu). Each player finds the Headquarters (Sztab) of their army and prepares their Monolith as follows:
- on one of the Monolith parts they place their Headquarters;
- on the other two parts they place any two Board tokens (Żetony Planszy) of their army, chosen in secret;
- finally they stack all 3 Monolith parts on top of one another, with the Headquarters on the third, highest part of the stack. This is the collapsed Monolith.
During the game a player may look at any time at which tokens lie on the lower parts of their Monolith. Their opponents learn them only once the Monolith is expanded.
After the Monoliths are prepared, the players shuffle the Board tokens of their army and continue the setup by placing the collapsed Monoliths on the board in the same way the Headquarters are placed.
Collapsed Monolith
While a Monolith is collapsed, it is treated as an ordinary Headquarters. The tokens on its lower parts do not work. The Headquarters token is ALWAYS on the highest part of the collapsed Monolith.
Expanding the Monolith
During their turn, after drawing tokens and discarding 1 of them, a player may decide to expand their Monolith. If they do, they may not place any other tokens on the board. They may still play Instant tokens (Żetony Natychmiastowe) and use the Traits (Cechy) of tokens already on the board.
EXCEPTION: If after the Monolith is expanded at least one of its parts is empty, Board tokens may be placed on the fields that those empty parts occupy (and only on them!), according to the normal rules.
To expand the Monolith, the player first removes the 2 lower parts from beneath the part with the Headquarters. The part with the Headquarters does not perform any Movement or Rotation; it stays on exactly the same field.
The player places the other two parts freely on empty fields of the board (they may freely rotate them), provided that after expansion each of the three parts is connected to at least one other part of the same Monolith.
Once expanded, the Monolith stays expanded until the end of the nearest Battle (Bitwa), when it MUST be collapsed (see further below):
- If the Headquarters is networked (zasieciowany), the Monolith can still be expanded (and collapsed).
Expanding the Monolith is impossible if the two lower parts cannot be placed on the board in accordance with the inseparability rule (see below). It is also forbidden to place a part of an expanded Monolith on top of another part of any Monolith (even an empty one), and to place an empty Monolith part beneath a token previously placed on the board.
Inseparability Rule of the Monolith
At every moment of the game, each of the three parts of a Monolith must be connected to at least one other part of that Monolith. Moreover, a token placed on a Monolith part in accordance with the standard rules may not leave that part (it is, of course, removed when it is eliminated).
Collapsing the Monolith
If the Monolith was expanded at the start of a Battle, it must always be collapsed after the Battle ends. The two expanded parts are put back beneath the part with the Headquarters, which stays on the same field, just as when expanding the Monolith.
The Monolith may be collapsed even if at least one of the lower parts is empty, or contains an enemy token (see further below). Wound markers (Rany) and Poison markers (Znaczniki Jadu) remain on the tokens being tucked back beneath the Headquarters.
The automatic collapse of the Monolith at the end of a Battle is the only way a Monolith can be collapsed. Unlike expanding, during their turn a player may NOT voluntarily collapse their Monolith.
During their turn a player may expand a Monolith that was collapsed automatically at the end of a previously fought Battle (following the rules for expanding the Monolith described above).
Action of the Monolith
A token placed on an exposed (visible) part of an expanded Monolith gains no additional protection from this. During a Battle it can happen that a token standing on one of the expanded parts of the Monolith is destroyed, leaving an empty Monolith part. That part is treated as an empty field (for example when checking whether the board is full and when triggering an automatic Battle), which means that any player may move or place their Board token there.
Tokens placed on the hidden parts of a collapsed Monolith have no effect on the game: Warriors do not attack, Modules do not support connected tokens, and during a Battle these tokens do not receive wounds from Poison markers placed on them, and so on.
A collapsed Monolith is treated as an ordinary Headquarters.
