How do Aftermath's Research and Epilogue modes handle setup, co-op and characters?

Research Mission: each Room of the main board gets one base-game and one Aftermath Exploration token, and the rulebook says only Aftermath Characters may be used (one player says any Character works). Players report it can use the base co-op rules. Epilogue: take the board as the base game left it, but remove all Heavy Objects that appeared (rulebook setup step 3); no Eggs are added. Aftermath Exploration tokens go on the main-board Rooms plus the Hibernatorium, Bridge and Engine Rooms, not the shuttle, though Noise is still rolled there. The Epilogue's personal objectives are for it only, so it does not really work as co-op.
