Rules of Play
Setup
Each player receives:
- 1 of each Ecology Resource (Other Parasite, Plant Parasite, Wood Rot, Symbiont, Soil/Dung)
- 2 Feast Tokens
- 1 Player Board
Shuffle the Mushroom Card deck and deal 8 cards face up in the middle of the table to establish the Mushroom Field. Place the Mushroom Card deck face down.
Start the Mushroom Season Marker (Season Token) on Winter.
Order of Play
Roll to see who goes first, then play proceeds to the left.
The active player rolls the dice.
- If a 7 is rolled, advance the Season Token to the next season.
- For all other rolls, all players collect 1 Ecology Resource according to the number rolled (refer to the top of your Player Board):
- 2: Other Parasite
- 3: Plant Parasite
- 4: Wood Rot
- 5: Symbiont
- 6: Soil / Dung
- 7: Change Seasons
- 8: Soil / Dung
- 9: Symbiont
- 10: Wood Rot
- 11: Plant Parasite
- 12: Other Parasite
After rolling, the active player can take up to 2 actions. These actions can be different or the same. There are 2 types of actions:
- Harvest a Mushroom Card.
- Make a Trade.
Harvest a Mushroom Card
To harvest a mushroom, pay the cost in Ecology Resources, then collect the indicated number of Feast Tokens and place the Mushroom Card face up in your basket of the corresponding season.
Mushrooms must be playable in the current season. To verify that you are in the correct season, check that the icon in the upper right corner of the Mushroom Card includes the season currently indicated by the Season Token on the Season Board.
Players place Mushroom Cards stacked face up on top of each other, under the baskets on their Basket Board. Mushroom Cards are collected to a maximum of 1 in winter, 2 in spring, 3 in summer, and 4 in fall (10 total).
Poison Mushroom Cards
Poison mushrooms are very interesting to a mycologist, but you must be careful when storing them.
Poison mushrooms have a grey background and have a Poison Token symbol in the lower left corner of the card. Next to the Poison Token symbol is an Ecology Resource symbol. Whenever this Ecology Resource is collected by the player with this poison mushroom, they also collect a Poison Token, which is worth -2 points at the end of the game. You cannot get rid of Poison Tokens, even if you trade away your poison mushroom.
Stinkhorn Mushroom Cards
Stinkhorn mushrooms smell very bad, and can keep other players from exchanging their mushrooms with yours.
Stinkhorn mushrooms have a green background. Another player cannot take a mushroom from a player that has a stinkhorn mushroom on top of any basket.
Magic Mushroom Cards
Magic mushrooms have a purple background and have a Magic symbol in the lower left corner of the card. After harvesting a magic mushroom, collect a Magic Mushroom Token. This token can be used as ANY 1 Ecology Resource or Feast Token.
Make a Trade
There are 6 types of trade available:
- Trade ANY 3 Ecology Resources for your choice of ANY 1 Ecology Resource.
- Trade ANY 3 Ecology Resources for 1 Feast Token.
- Trade 1 Feast Token for 1 Ecology Resource of your choice.
- Trade 1 Feast Token to advance from the current season to the next season.
- Trade 1 Feast Token to deal out 4 new Mushroom Cards into the field, replacing the top or bottom row, and moving the replaced cards to the bottom of the deck in any order.
- Trade 2 Feast Tokens to exchange one of your mushrooms with another player in the current season (do not collect Feast Tokens). NOTE: A mushroom cannot be traded if an uncovered stinkhorn is on top of any of the recipient's baskets, in any season.
End of Game & Scoring
The game ends when the first player completely fills their basket with 10 mushrooms: 1 in winter, 2 in spring, 3 in summer, and 4 in fall.
Players tally the points of each Mushroom Card in their basket (point value is in the upper left corner of the card).
- 1 additional point is given for each Feast Token or Magic Mushroom Token in a player's possession at the end of the game.
- 2 points are deducted for each Poison Token in a player's possession at the end of the game.
The player with the highest score wins!
