Overview

Mycelia - Prisma is a game expansion. You'll need a base copy of Mycelia to play, and it's highly recommended you play it at least once before trying Prisma. When you're ready, the following apply:

  • All of the rules from the basic Mycelia game continue to apply without any changes.
  • The additional rules for the game expansion already included in the basic game also apply here. Therefore, take all 70 of the cards from Mycelia (40 basic playing cards and 30 expansion cards) and shuffle them together with the 20 Prisma expansion cards C to make one single pile of cards.
  • You can use the front or back of the game board from the basic Mycelia game to play Mycelia - Prisma.

Mycelia - Prisma introduces a new type of drop called prism drops. Like the light blue drops, the prism drops are dewdrops and can be moved and removed using the existing cards as per the basic game rules. The same applies for cards showing transparent drops.

Example: You play the Marasmius rotula card during your turn. One dewdrop and one prism drop are on the moss field. You can use the card to remove both drops and place them on the shrine, as it makes no difference whether they're a dewdrop or a prism drop.

In Mycelia - Prisma, the most important goal when playing cards is, once again, to remove drops - both dewdrops and prism drops!!

Preparing to Play Mycelia - Prisma

Prepare the game like you would the basic Mycelia game, but also do the following:

  • Place the round favors bar 5 on the Shrine of Life.
  • Use one of the new setup cards 3 to place the 12 dewdrops and 10 prism drops on your game boards.
  • Each player receives a gift area 2 and positions this along the top of their game board.
  • Each player additionally receives the mushroom figure in their chosen color 9.
  • Each player receives their start card A with the rune to match (top right-hand corner) as a seventh start card, which is shuffled with the other cards at the beginning.
  • Place the players' mushroom figures on the 0 (Start) space on the favors bar. This is the first space clockwise after the arrow.
  • Important: If you're playing with less than four people, place the remaining mushrooms on the first space I (three players) and the second space II (two players). These mushrooms stay where they are for the remainder of the game.
  • Shuffle the gift cards D in each color separately and create three face-up draw piles: one pile of green cards, one pile of amber cards, and one pile of purple cards. Place these in the designated places on the root field 6 so that everyone can see them.
  • Shuffle the 20 new Prisma expansion cards C into the deck of 70 cards from Mycelia (incl. expansion) and lay out five cards as usual, turned face up.

New Gameplay in Mycelia - Prisma

1) Favor and prism drops

  • Whenever a player removes a prism drop from the board (whether directly or via the shrine field), that player immediately receives one favor.
  • Use your mushroom figure to then add the favor to the favors bar. For each favor you receive, move your mushroom forward one space.
  • Important: Skip any spaces occupied by other mushrooms. Always place your mushroom on the next free space on the bar.

(Diagram: a mushroom moves along the favors bar, jumping over the mushrooms in front of it.)

Example: You've placed two prism drops on the shrine and received two favor points. Therefore, you can now move your mushroom forward two free spaces on the favors bar and skip over the mushrooms in front of you.

  • The only exceptions are the start space and the purple space at the end of the bar. Several mushrooms can be on these spaces at the same time.
  • If you're already on the last space on the bar and receive an additional favor, you forfeit it. You remain on the last space until you buy a gift card.
  • It's also possible to gain favors through card effects if you see this symbol (favor symbols showing one favor and two favors). You then immediately move your mushroom forward on the favors bar.
  • When the bonus symbol allows several players to place prism drops on the shrine and move mushroom, be sure to heed the sequence! Start in a clockwise direction, with the player to the left of the player currently taking their turn.

2) Buy gift cards

  • You can use favors to buy gift cards.
  • The color determines how much a gift card costs: green, amber, or purple. To buy a gift card from a pile on the root field, your mushroom must be on at least one space in this color.
  • You can also use "more valuable" colors to buy cheaper gifts. On green, you can only buy green gifts; on amber, you can buy amber or green gifts; and on purple, you can buy gifts in any color.
  • To buy a gift card, return your mushroom to the start space on the favors bar.
  • You don't receive any "change". If you've used a more expensive color to pay for a cheaper gift card, you still have to return to the start space on the favors bar.
  • Then take the corresponding card from the pile and place it on top of your own draw pile like the other cards.

Note: Like the other cards, some gift cards have a one-time effect that applies immediately - as indicated by the lightning bolt shown at the top left. You or the other players only receive this bonus once when you buy the gift card from the root field, and never again later.

  • You don't need to refill the root field with the gift cards, as there are always three cards available for purchase (on the face-up piles). When a pile is empty, there are unfortunately no more gift cards in that color.

3) Play gift cards

  • Gift cards are a new type of cards that work differently from the regular cards.
  • When you draw three new cards at the end of your turn (or at the start of the game), you must immediately place gift cards in your gift area after drawing them.
  • Always place the gift cards at the top of your gift area. There's space for any number of gift cards there.
  • Each gift card has a number on the left (0 to 3). This indicates how many new cards you must immediately add to your hand from your own deck when you place this gift in the gift area.
  • You can perform this "preparation" (playing of gift cards and drawing of new cards) before it's your turn (during other players' turns). It doesn't matter if you forget and only catch up at the start of your own turn, though.
  • Important: The gift cards are not like the other cards, which you must immediately place on your discard pile after using their effect. They remain turned face up in your gift area throughout your turn.
  • Most gift cards then provide a special ability that is valid for the duration of your turn.
  • The symbols at the bottom of the gift card represent this special ability. See the end of these instructions for an overview for explanations of all gifts.
  • Important: Like with other cards, you use these abilities, but you can always choose to them.

Example: Charlotte already began preparing her move during her fellow players' turns. At the end of her previous turn, she drew three cards from her deck, which included two gift cards. She immediately played the two gift cards and placed them in her gift area. She then drew one card for each so that she had three cards in her hand again at the start of her turn.

Further Special Features and Variations in Mycelia - Prisma

  • Replenishment: If the shrine is full and you use a supply card, one to two new dewdrops come into play, just like in the basic game. No prism drops are added.
  • Basic action - action card a: You may also use action a to swap the three gift cards on the root field. If you use action a, you must decide if you want to either swap all five of the cards from the showcase or return the top three gift cards to the bottom of their respective piles on the root field.
  • Remove cards: You're already familiar with this play feature from the expansion to the basic game. What's new is that from now on, you can not only remove cards from the discard pile, but also cards that are in your gift area.
  • Recycle cards: This symbol describes a new play feature. Similar to removing cards, you can choose exactly one card from your own discard pile or from the gift area. Place this card back at the top of your draw pile again. If you choose to recycle a gift card from the gift area, the effect immediately ceases to apply during the current turn.

Example: It's now Charlotte's turn. She plays her three cards. The two gift cards make Charlotte's move far easier, as they allow her to ignore all the landscapes and the beetle symbols. This is particularly helpful with the Phallus indusiatus and Cyptotrama asprata cards, of course.

End of the Game

Mycelia - Prisma ends in the same way as Mycelia, with one exception:

If more than one player manages to clear their board in the final round, the involved player with more leaves left wins. If there's a tie, then the involved player who has more favors left at the end of the game wins. If there's still a tie, then the players share the win.

The Solo Game in Mycelia - Prisma

No new materials are required for the solo game. The game setup and gameplay are essentially identical to the basic game, with the following variations:

  • Gwidyon still starts with 20 dewdrops, even if you now have 22 dewdrops and prism drops.
  • Gwidyon still doesn't receive any supplies when the supply card is used.
  • Place the favors bar on the shrine and set it up like in the two-player game:
    • Use the unused mushrooms to cover the first two spaces.
    • In addition to your mushroom, also place a second mushroom belonging to Gwidyon on space 0 on the bar. (Gwidyon likes to play with the yellow mushroom, but you can give him another color if you like.)
  • Shuffle and stack the favor cards on the root field as described in the game setup.
  • Like in a regular game, you can now also acquire favor cards in the solo game.
  • Gwidyon still doesn't buy any cards from the open showcase and doesn't take any favor cards from the root field, either.
  • Gwidyon never spends favors. His mushroom figure only moves forward on the bar during the game.

When does Gwidyon move forward on the favors bar?

Perform the following additional steps every time Gwidyon reshuffles his solo card deck (because he only has one face-down card left after his turn):

  1. Move Gwidyon's mushroom forward one space on the favors bar. Gwidyon follows the same rules as you: He jumps over other mushrooms (including you) and stops on the next free space.
  2. Swap the gift cards on the root field: Take the top card from each pile (green, amber, purple) and place them at the bottom of the pile.
  3. Then it's your turn again and play continues as usual.

Note: In Mycelia - Prisma it's a little easier to win against Gwidyon. Can you manage to win even if Gwidyon only has 17 or 18 dewdrops on his pile of leaves?

Gift Card Overview

Viatica (start card)

  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • If you buy a card from the open showcase during this turn (but not from the root field with the gift cards), you receive one favor. This applies to every card you buy from the cards shown, so you can use this card multiple times.

Umbra

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, you may immediately recycle one card.
  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • Ignore the bonus for other players on your cards during this turn. If you play a card with this symbol, the other players receive nothing. This also applies if you buy cards with a one-time effect that would apply to other players. This effect expires after this turn.

Petasus

  • One-time effect: When you buy this gift card, you immediately receive four leaves and may remove one card.
  • Don't draw any cards when you play it.
  • This gift card has no function during your turn. But the one-time effect is really great!

Velamen

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, you will immediately receive two leaves.
  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • Pay one leaf less for each card you buy from the open showcase during your turn.

Reticulus

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, you may immediately remove one drop from a moss field.
  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • Ignore the beetle symbol on your cards during this turn. There must still be at least the number of drops shown on the space, but there may also be more there. Also ignore beetle symbols for one-time effects of cards you buy during this turn.

Globi

  • One-time effect: When you buy this gift card, choose one space with exactly one drop on it. Remove this and immediately place a shrine field there. This shrine field can be used immediately.
  • Don't draw any cards when you play it.
  • The gift card has no function during your turn. But the one-time effect is really powerful!
  • Note: If you first play Reticulus and then buy Globi from the root field during your turn, you may ignore the beetle symbol. This allows you to also use a space containing several drops and remove them. However, there must be at least one drop on the space.

Clessidra

  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • Receive one leaf every time you remove a drop from your game board during this turn and place it on the shrine. This applies to both dewdrops and prism drops.

Lux

  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • Perform the first hand card you play twice during this turn - as if you were playing it twice. If it allows you to select an option, you can choose a different option the second time round.
  • Note: "Hand card" means regular cards here and not gift cards, as you place your gift cards in your gift area before your turn.

Falx

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, you will immediately receive two leaves.
  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • Every time you buy one card this turn, you may remove one of your cards. Remove them as usual from the discard pile or from the gift area. Also place your newly purchased card on the draw pile, as usual. This function doesn't apply if you buy cards from the root field with favor points.

Anellus

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, you may immediately remove one card from your discard pile.
  • Draw two cards when you play this card.
  • This gift card has no further function during your turn.

Lyra

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, your fellow players may immediately remove one drop from any space.
  • Draw three cards when you play this card.
  • This gift card has no further function during your turn.

Perspicillum

  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • You may use all your action cards (below your game board, with the letters a to g) for free during your turn.
  • Important: You can still only use each action card once per turn!

Virga

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, you may immediately recycle one card.
  • Don't draw any cards when you play it.
  • Every "Move" symbol on your cards during your turn counts as a "Remove" symbol instead.
  • Whenever you would move a drop, you immediately remove it from the board. This also applies if you buy cards that would allow you to move drops immediately through their one-time effect.

Iris

  • Draw one card when you play this card.
  • Ignore the landscapes on your cards during your turn. This means that all your cards can perform their function on any space, including on the earth spaces!

Gemma

  • One-time effect: If you buy this gift card, you will immediately receive two leaves.
  • Draw two cards when you play this card.
  • Every time you buy one card from the open showcase this turn, you may recycle one of your cards. This applies to every card you buy, which means that this function can be triggered multiple times during your turn. This function doesn't apply if you buy cards from the root field with favor points.
  • Important: Remember that you can also recycle gift cards from your gift area (including this card itself). As soon as a gift card is no longer in your gift area, the effect stops working.

Simulacrum

  • Draw two cards when you play this card.
  • Every time you buy one card from the open showcase this turn, you receive two favors. This applies to every card you buy, which means that this function can be triggered multiple times during your turn. This function doesn't apply if you use favor points to buy cards from the root field.

Action Cards f and g

When you buy these two cards, you immediately receive one of the action cards f or g, which you add to the other action cards at the bottom of your game board as usual.

  • Important: You may only add a maximum of four action cards to your game board! If you receive more, you must discard an action card of your choice.
  • Action card f allows you to pay one leaf every turn to receive one favor in return.
  • Action card g allows you to pay three leaves every turn to recycle one card.
  • Important: You can also use action cards during the turn you receive them.
  • Iris
  • Gemma
  • Simulacrum
  • may
    forfeit
  • You must clear your gift area at the end of your turn. Place all of the gift cards in this area on the discard pile together with the other cards. Only then can you draw cards for your next turn (possibly after shuffling them first).
