Game Components

1 Kullerbü Dump Truck, 1 site manager Bruno Bear (wooden figure), 1 construction plan, 1 building site, 4 wooden blocks (foundations, brickwork, roof, shrubbery), 4 storage areas (foundations, brickwork, roof, shrubbery), 12 traffic cone tiles, 1 rulebook

Important: Please remove the wrapper before the first game and carefully push the traffic cone tiles out of the cardboard surrounds. The wrapper and the two cardboard surrounds are not needed for the game and can be disposed of.

Tip for Kullerbü/Balltrack owners: If you like, you can connect the material storage areas with each other and with the construction site by means of Kullerbü tracks. You can then have the dump truck drive along the tracks to collect the materials from the builders' yard and bring them to the site for use in the construction project.

Game Concept

Paul's aunt is building a house. It's a complicated job. Site manager Bruno Bear's plan shows the order in which everything has to be done. He knows exactly what has to happen next and who is responsible for doing it. You, the players, help him find the right tools and craftsmen. In addition, you will try to uncover the correct tiles for implementing the plan. Because it is only then that you will be able to bring them to him on the dump truck, and also to collect the correct wooden blocks from the builders' yard and transport them to the construction site. Have fun!

Before the Game Begins

Slot the construction site together and place it green side down. Position the dump truck at the construction site. Distributed the four storage areas around it at some distance away. Place each of the wooden blocks on the matching storage area.

Slot the construction plan together and position site manager Bruno Bear on the white square next to the one-way street sign. Set aside the 4 traffic cone tiles with the birds for the moment. These are only needed in the game variant for professional builders. Shuffle the remaining traffic cone tiles and place them in a grid as shown next to the construction plan.

Free Play and Exploring the Details

In free play, your child will be learning about what happens on a building site and how a house is constructed. Look at the game materials together and discuss what they show. Help your child to place the wooden blocks on the matching storage areas at the depot.

Talk to your child about the items that are needed for constructing a building, e.g. a concrete mixer, bricks, wood, roof tiles, etc. Now take a closer look at the storage areas depicted. Which craftsmen are shown there? What tools do they use and what sort of work do they do?

Encourage your child to use the dump truck for transporting the individual wooden blocks and traffic cone tiles to the appropriate storage areas and unload them there. Later, your child will drive them from there to the site to build the house.

Now We Can Begin!

First of all, take a close look at the construction phase that site manager Bruno is standing in front of.

Ask your child: What can be seen on the two images that site manager Bruno Bear is currently looking at?

Talk to your child about the objects shown. What color are they? Have you seen them before? Do you perhaps have one as a toy? Explain in simple words what you need it for and what can be done with it.

The game can now begin. Play moves in a clockwise direction. Which player has most recently visited a construction site? They go first. Drive the dump truck to the traffic cone tiles. Now try to find one of the two images. Turn over any tile.

Ask your child: What can you see on the tile? Is site manager Bruno Bear standing in front of one of these images?

  • Is it the image that Bruno Bear is standing in front of? Excellent! Load the dump truck with the tile and drive it to Bruno Bear. Place it on the matching image.
  • Is it a different image? Oh, what a shame, it's not the right traffic cone tile. Turn the tile back over after all the other children have seen it too.

Tip: You can tell by the background color whether the tile really belongs to the construction phase. It corresponds to the color of the wooden block.

Has a construction phase been completed?

If you have deposited a traffic cone tile with Bruno Bear, see if he now has two matching tiles for this construction phase.

Ask your child: Are there two matching traffic cone tiles in Bruno Bear's construction phase?

  • Yes! Great! Load the dump truck with the appropriate wooden block, drive it to the construction site and unload it. Now you can proceed on to the next phase of construction. Move Bruno Bear one square further along in the direction of the garden. Now seek out the next two images among the traffic cone tiles. In this way, the house gradually takes shape: foundations, brickwork, roof and garden.
  • Not found? Never mind. The next player looks for the second matching traffic cone tile. It is now their turn to drive the dump truck to the traffic cone tiles and flip over a tile.

End of the Game

The game ends when the last traffic cone tile has been brought to Bruno Bear and the shrubbery to the construction site. Plant the shrubbery in the garden. Woo hoo, you've built the house together.

If you move the house aside and turn over the construction site, you will see the finished garden. Quickly build the house again. Paul's aunt now has a finished house.

Variant for Professional Builders

The game becomes a little trickier if you add 1-4 birds to the pile of traffic cone tiles. The following change is made to the basic game:

  • If a traffic cone tile with a bird is turned over, site manager Bruno Bear takes a break. Turn the traffic cone tile back over after all other children have seen the bird.

For older children who already know the game materials quite well, you can also ask more detailed questions, including about personal experiences. For example, which construction vehicles are shown here? Which other ones do you know? What is the mole doing? What does site manager Bruno Bear have in his hand?

Story

Paul's Aunt Builds A House: Paul & his friends help!

Paul is excited because the construction project is beginning today. His aunt is building a house! Best of all, the construction site is right around the corner so he can watch everything closely. And it's really exciting what's happening there.

After all, a house doesn't just build itself. So that everything goes to plan, site manager Bruno Bear is supervising the construction work. To make sure that nothing gets forgotten, he has set out all of the construction phases on the building plan.

The place where the work takes place is called "the building site." Many construction workers are employed there. Everyone wears a helmet on their head to protect them from falling objects.

Construction Phase 1: Pouring/laying the foundations

Buildings are really heavy. That's why the first phase of any construction project involves laying the foundations. They have to carry the weight of the entire building. So that it doesn't get too cold in the house, the ground floor is insulated from below too.

First of all, a large pit is dug in the ground. The dirt is removed with an excavator and heaped up in a mound. This dirt may be needed later for laying out the garden. If the amount of dirt is too great, the extra is loaded into a dump truck and driven away from the building site.

The supply lines for electricity, water, sewage and heating are laid in the trenches that have been dug, so it is important that the construction workers stick to Bruno Bear's site plan.

If the pit is smooth and level, the foundations and floor can be poured as liquid concrete. To do this, a large concrete mixer is driven to the construction site. The unique feature of this vehicle is the drum on the back that keeps rotating all the way from the depot to the job site so that the concrete gets really well mixed and does not start to set before it has been poured. At the building site, construction worker Kira Cat fills the pit with liquid concrete from a large hose. The concrete will gradually solidify. When it is completely dry, the foundations are ready.

Phase 2: Brickwork

Next along is bricklayer Miro Mole whose job is to build the walls of the house. He lays rows of bricks in an overlapping pattern. The bricks are held together by mortar. This is a mixture of cement, sand, and water, which is made in a mixing machine or in a trough. Miro Mole spreads it on the bricks with his trowel before pressing them firmly into place. This is how the walls take shape.

The walls are also insulated. Miro Mole either uses special insulated bricks or he insulates the wall from the outside with additional cladding. This is so that Paul's aunt's house will be nice and warm in the winter and not too hot in the summer.

Miro leaves gaps for the windows and doors so that Paul's aunt will have daylight and a nice view into the garden, and so that she can go in and out of the house. At a later stage, the walls will be plastered. Now the carpenters can come and start on the roof.

Construction Phase 3: Roofing

The carpenters do all the woodwork on the house. First, they lay the beams for the ceiling onto the brickwork. Then they nail wooden boards onto the beams. Next, they construct the roof truss, onto which they nail horizontal slats which will later support the roof tiles.

It is now the turn of roofer Frido Frosch. He inserts skylights, insulates the roof and then covers it with roof tiles. Depending on the roof size, a lot of tiles will be needed.

Phase 4: Moving in and landscaping

Now it's time to do the finishing work inside and outside of the house. The window installers put in the last of the windows, so that the outer walls can be plastered. Also, electricians will run cabling throughout the house, connecting it to outlets and light switches. The plumbers will fit a sink in the bathroom, install a toilet, a bath and/or a shower.

Soon everything is ready for Paul's aunt to move in. The final phase is usually the landscaping of the garden. Paul's aunt calls on the services of gardener Flora Fox. She lays out a lawn and plants flowers, trees and shrubs. And as a special surprise for Paul, his aunt has also included a big swing and a sandbox in the garden design.

Have fun on the swing, Paul!
