Components

  • 44 Season Cards (0-10, in each of 4 suits)
  • 11 X Cards
  • 10 Dice
  • 5 Player Aids
  • 1 Dice Mat
  • Scoreboard
  • Dry Erase Marker

Setup

  1. Make the deck:
    • 3 players: 1-7 in all suits
    • 4 players: 1-9 in all suits
    • 5 players: 0-10 in all suits; shuffle 1 X card into the deck
  2. Place the X cards, dice, and dice mat near the play area. Give each player a player aid. The last player that has smelled a flower is the start player.

The Four Seasons

The four suits are the seasons, and they cycle in this order: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and back to Spring.

Each card shows, from top to bottom: rank (0-10), suit, victory points, negative victory points, and rot symbols.

Deal

Start each round by shuffling the season cards and dealing 9 to each player. (In 4 or 5 player, this will be all cards in the deck; in 3 player, it will be all but 1.) Also, give each player 2 X cards.

Roll all 10 dice and sort them by suit on the dice mat. Place the X dice in the center.

Tricks

The start player leads the first trick by playing any one card from their hand. The suit they play becomes the lead suit.

Going clockwise around the table, each other player must play 1 card into the trick. If you have any cards of the lead suit, you must play one of them (with some exceptions; see Dice and X Cards below). If not, you may play any card.

When everyone has played a card, whoever played the highest card in the lead suit wins the trick, unless someone played the trump suit. The trump suit is always the season that follows the lead suit (for example if the lead suit is Autumn, the trump suit is Winter). If any trump is played, the highest trump card wins the trick.

The trick winner takes all cards in the trick and places them face down in their score pile. The X cards and dice in the score pile should be visible to all players. Additionally, they choose 1 die from the dice mat and place it on their player aid, without changing its face. They then lead the next trick.

Dice

Whenever you would play a card into a trick, you may instead play any die from your player aid. Your die does not have to match the lead suit, and you may play it even if you have the lead suit in hand. You may lead a trick with a die.

A suited die has no number and always loses to any season card in its suit (including 0). It can still win a trick if it is the only trump played. If multiple players play trump dice (and no trump cards are played), the player who played first wins. An X die acts the same as an X card.

When you win a trick with dice in it, place the dice in your score pile along with the cards, without changing their faces. Keep them separate from any dice on your player aid.

NOTE: You must still follow the led suit with a card or die unless you are playing a die off suit or X card.

X Cards

You can always play an X card (or die) into a trick, even if you have the lead suit in hand. An X has no suit and always loses to any season card or suited die.

If the lead player plays an X, then the lead suit is determined by the first player to play a suit. If every player plays an X, then the lead player wins the trick.

Round End

When a player claims the last die on the dice mat, the round ends immediately. Each player adds any cards left in their hand and dice on their player aid to their score pile.

If players tie for most Xs, they all lose -1 point per X. If players tie for next-most Xs, they all add +1 point per X.

Calculate and write each player's score from their score pile on the scoreboard. Your score for the round can be negative.

The next player clockwise becomes the start player, and a new round begins. Play rounds equal to the number of players. The player with the most points wins. Tied players share the victory.

Round End Scoring

Each player scores the cards and dice in their score pile as follows:

  • Add +1 point per victory point symbol.
  • Lose -1 point per negative victory point symbol.
  • If you have the most Xs (including dice), lose -1 point per X.
  • If you have the next-most Xs (including dice), add +1 point per X.
  • Suited dice are worth 0 points.
