What's in the Box

  • 6 colored dice
  • 6 racing cars
  • 1 starting space
  • 1 finish line
  • 49 cardboard tiles:
    • 1 starting tile
    • 36 acceleration tiles in 6 colors
    • 6 re-roll tiles
    • 6 trophy tiles
  • 20 track parts (10 bends and 10 straight tracks)

Before You Start

First, decide on a racetrack that you would like to play on. It is entirely up to you how many track parts you want to use and which ones. For the first few games, we recommend a shorter track or the classic oval track (medium). Return any remaining track parts to the box.

  • Short
  • Medium
  • Long

Arrange the selected track parts next to each other as you like. Begin with the starting space and end with the finish line space. In closed tracks, the starting and finish line spaces are directly next to each other. It is possible to have long spaces of one color over several parts of the track. Treat these long spaces without black outlines as a single space, so a single die will be enough to move forward there.

Once you have finished laying out your racetrack:

  • Place the 6 colored dice in the center of the table where everyone can easily reach them.
  • Every player selects a racing car and places it on the starting space. The other racing cars stay in the box.
  • Place the same number of winner's trophy tiles next to the racetrack as there are children.
  • The youngest child takes the starting tile and goes first.
  • You only need the remaining tiles in the variation for pros. In the basic game, they remain in the box. The rules for the pro variation are explained later in the instructions.

Let's Get Started

  1. Take turns playing in a clockwise direction. The child with the starting tile goes first: Roll all six dice at once. Tip: It's best to hold the dice in both hands.
  2. Compare the colors rolled with the colors of the spaces on the racetrack that are in front of your racing car.
  3. Can you find a color match? Or maybe even several consecutive matches?
  4. Think about the order in which you want to drive across the spaces and place the appropriate dice step-by-step on the corresponding space on the racetrack. Then move your racing car.

You have to follow these racing rules:

  • Your racing car can only go forward.
  • You can only change lanes sideways if the front edge of the neighboring space is in front of the space occupied by your racing car or the last die rolled.
  • The gray spaces (with a tire) are obstacle spaces. You are not allowed to drive on them.
  • You can also move over spaces occupied by another racing car. Simply place the die on the same space behind the racing car.
  • If your turn ends on an occupied space, you overtake the racing car that is on that space. Move it back to the next possible free space (without any obstacle or other racing car) in the same lane.

Tip: With a little luck and a clever combination of dice rolls, you can move up to 6 spaces.

If you can no longer place dice because there is no suitable space in front of your last placed die, you move your racing car onto the space of that die and your turn is over. Of course, it may be that you cannot place a die at all. In this case, you just stay where you are. It's the next child's turn, and this child rolls all 6 dice.

Example: Nik (red racing car) is on the move and rolls the colors yellow, green, purple, purple, white and blue. He first places the purple die in front of his racing car, then he changes lanes and places the white die on Henry's space. Then he places the yellow die and the second purple die, followed by the green die on Katie's space. Unfortunately, he can no longer use the blue die.

Since Nik has finished his turn on Katie's space, he overtakes her racing car and moves it back to the next free space on the track. The first space behind Katie is an obstacle space and the second is already occupied by Cora. Katie's green racing car is therefore placed in the third space behind her, the free red space.

When Does the Game End?

To cross the finish line, you have to place a white die on the finishing space.

As soon as the first racing car reaches the finish line, play continues up to the child holding the starting tile, so that you all had the same number of turns. In this last round, you all have to remember how many dice you used for driving.

Tip: As a memory aid, you can also take an acceleration tile with the corresponding number from the box.

If you are the only child to cross the finish line in your racing car, you are the only winner! If several racing cars cross the finish line at the same time, the child who used the fewest dice in the last round is the winner. If this also results in a tie, the winners share the trophy and celebrate their victory together. As a reward, there is a trophy tile – this will distinguish you as the reigning Champion of Monza until the next race!

Game Variation for Pros: Monza Challenge

A long track is recommended for this game variation. You also play and drive in a clockwise direction on the long track. The rules of the basic game remain the same, with the following additions:

Before You Start

At the beginning of the game, each child also receives: 1 re-roll tile and a set of 6 different colored acceleration tiles.

Let's Get Started

You may use any number of the new tiles during your turn.

Use the re-roll tile after you roll the dice, but before you place the dice on the racetrack. Now you can re-roll any number of your dice once. Then put the tile back in the box.

The acceleration tiles are available in 6 different colors. You can use this tile during your turn like a die of the matching color and place it on the racetrack. Put any tiles you have used back in the box at the end of your turn.

Turbo Roll

If you manage to place all 6 dice on the racetrack during your turn, you get the opportunity for a turbo roll. Note: It does not matter how many acceleration tiles you may have used. It is only whether you were able to use all the dice that counts.

First, move your racing car to the space of the die or acceleration tile last placed down. Take all the dice and acceleration tiles off the racetrack and then roll again with 2 dice. If you get a color match with one or even two spaces in front of you, you can use these dice to move your racing car even further. Then your turn ends.

Important: You only check if you have landed on an occupied space after the turbo roll.

Example: Nick rolls the colors red, red, blue, yellow, white and purple. However, to get through the narrow gap, he needs a green. Since he doesn't have a green acceleration tile either, Nick decides to use the re-roll tile and re-roll one purple and one white die. He rolls purple and green.

With these dice, Nick gets to the blue space. Bert wants to unlock a turbo roll, so he places his white acceleration tile on the white space, which allows him to place the sixth die on the following purple space.

Since he has now used all 6 dice, he can do a turbo roll with 2 dice. Nick places his racing car on the purple space and rolls the 2 dice again. He rolls blue and purple. The blue die means he can move one more space to the blue space.

Bonus Step Game Variation

You can use this variation in the basic game, and also in the Monza Challenge.

Whenever a turn ends, the racing car that matches the color of the last die or acceleration tile used may also move forward one space. It may move to any directly adjacent free space – changing lanes is also allowed.

Important: Check turbo roll first, then the bonus step!
