  • 40 ingredients (10 different ingredients, 4 of each)
  • 40 slime cubes
  • 10 recipe cards

Goal of the Game

Monster Soup is a game in which you must find various objects in a bag (the recipe ingredients) using only your sense of touch. You are not allowed to look inside the bag while playing. The winner is the player whose soup contains the most slime cubes at the end of the 4th round of play.

Setup

  1. Each player chooses a monster colour and places in front of them the matching equipment:
    • 1 soup bowl
    • 1 provisions bag
    • 10 ingredients (1 of each kind)
  2. Each player puts their 10 ingredients into their bag.
  3. Shuffle the recipe card deck and make a face-down pile, which you place in the centre of the table.
  4. Make a supply of slime cubes within reach of all players.

How to Play

A game of Monster Soup is played over 4 rounds with an identical sequence in each. The only difference is that you must find 1 ingredient in the first round, 2 ingredients in the second round, 3 ingredients in the third round, and finally 4 ingredients in the last round.

Round Overview

Summary of a round:

  1. Empty your bowl into your bag.
  2. Place a recipe card.
  3. Search for the ingredients in your bag.
  4. Put slime cubes into your bowl.

1. Empty your bowl into your bag

If your soup bowl contains ingredients and slime cubes, each player empties its contents into their bag. Note that in the first round the players' bowls are all empty.

2. Place a recipe card

The recipe cards drawn and revealed in previous rounds are left face up in the centre of the table. They always designate ingredients to be found this round. In the first round there is only 1 card face up, and therefore only 1 ingredient to find. In the second round there are 2 cards (players must find 2 ingredients), then 3 cards in the third round, and 4 cards in the fourth and last round.

The last player to have eaten soup or seen a monster draws the top card of the recipe card pile and places it face up in the centre of the table, thereby revealing a new ingredient to find. That player then counts aloud to three.

3. Search for the ingredients in your bag

Counting to three, all players plunge a hand into their bag to find the ingredients on the face-up recipe cards. If a player thinks they have found one of the ingredients, they take it out of the bag.

If it is the right ingredient, they put it in their soup bowl. Otherwise, they put it back in the bag and plunge their hand back in.

The first player to have found all the ingredients for the round calls out "MONSTER SOUP!". The other players immediately stop searching and remove their hand from the bag.

4. Put slime cubes into your bowl

Each player who has found one or more ingredients takes one slime cube per correct ingredient found and puts it (or them) into their bowl (to give more flavour to their soup).

The round is over and a new round can begin.

End of the Game

At the end of the 4th round the game is over.

The players empty the contents of their bag into their bowl (which already contains any ingredients and slime cubes gathered during the 4th round) and count the slime cubes present in their soup.

The player whose bowl contains the greatest number of slime cubes wins the game. They may then enjoy their delicious monster soup in peace! (In case of a tie, the tied players share the victory.)

Bon appétit!

Examples

Example: end of round 3

The 3rd round is over. Amina has found 2 of the 3 ingredients from the recipe cards: a snake and an eyeball. She did not manage to find the ice cream cone before the end of the round. She therefore gains 2 slime cubes and puts them in her bowl. She is ready for the 4th and final round of the game!

Example: end of round 4 and end of the game

The 4th round is over. Amina has found 3 of the 4 ingredients from the recipe cards: an eyeball, a teddy bear and an ice cream cone. She did not manage to find the snake before the end of the round. She therefore gains 3 slime cubes and puts them in her bowl, then empties the contents of her bag into her bowl and counts the number of slime cubes it contains to determine whether she wins the game.
