Object of the Game
Be the only player who has not gone bankrupt.
Contents
1 game board, 1 electronic banking unit, 6 tokens selected at random, 28 property cards, 16 Chance cards, 16 Community Chest cards, 6 MONOPOLY bank cards, 32 houses, 12 hotels and 2 dice.
Note: the dollar of MONOPOLY (M) is the only currency recognised for playing MONOPOLY World.
Quick Game
If you are used to playing Monopoly, you can now play shorter games!
- Before the start of the game, the banker shuffles the property cards and deals two cards to each player. The players immediately pay the price shown on the two properties they have just received. The game then begins according to the rules of a normal game.
- You may only build three houses (instead of four) on each property before you can buy a hotel. If you wish to sell a hotel, its value is always reduced by half compared with the purchase price.
- When the second player goes bankrupt, the game ends. The banker uses the electronic banking unit to add up the wealth of each remaining player, that is:
- The balance of their MONOPOLY bank card.
- Their properties, companies (transport and energy) at the price shown on the board.
- Their mortgaged properties, valued at half the value shown on the board.
- Their houses, valued at their purchase price.
- Their hotels, valued at their purchase price, including the value of the 4 houses given in exchange.
The richest player wins the game.
Monopoly Against the Clock
You may also agree on a fixed length of time at the start of the game and play against the clock. The richest player at the end of that time wins the game.

Playing MONOPOLY
The Banker
One of the players is elected banker. If there are more than 5 players, the banker may choose to take on only this role. The banker also handles the following:
- The electronic banking unit.
- The property cards.
- The houses and hotels.
- The deals and auction sales.
How to Play
- The players roll the two dice. The player with the highest total starts, and play continues clockwise.
- On your turn, roll the two dice and move forward the number of spaces shown on the dice. Two or more tokens may stop on the same space at the same time. Depending on the space you land on, you may:
- Buy a property at the price shown on the board space (if no player already owns it). See page 8.
- Ask the banker to sell a property at auction (if you do not wish to buy it at the announced price). See page 8.
- Pay rent (if the property you land on belongs to another player). See page 8.
- Pay taxes.
- Draw a Chance or Community Chest card. See page 10.
- Go to jail. See page 11.
- When you own all the properties of one colour group, you may buy houses or hotels to build on those properties.
- If you have no money left, you may mortgage or sell a property to pay your debts. If you cannot collect enough money to pay a rent, a tax or a bill, you are declared bankrupt and eliminated.
- No player may lend money to or borrow money from another player. However, if another player agrees, you may pay them with one of your properties rather than with your bank card.
- If you roll doubles, carry out the usual actions on the space where you land, then roll the dice again. If you roll three doubles in a row, go to jail immediately!
- Keep playing. The last player still in the game is declared the winner.
Electronic Banking Unit
The electronic banking unit's screen shows up to 5 digits. For example, 100,000 is shown as 100k and 1,000,000 is shown as 1 M. When you enter amounts into the bank, you must use this format.
- M (Million): When you pass the Go space, the banker inserts your bank card into the left slot of the electronic banking unit and presses this button to credit your account with M2 Millions.
- K (Thousand): Thousand.
- C (Cancel): To start a new game, hold this button down until you hear a beep. All accounts are erased and every player starts again with an account of M15 Millions.
- Decimal point (add a comma / adjust sound): To adjust the sound, remove the cards and press this button.
- Handshake button: The banker presses this button to start the time limit for deals and auction sales. See Deals / Auction Sales on page 8.
- Green + (receive money): Receive money.
- Red − (pay): Pay.
Stacks: For setting up and removing the card stacks, see page 11.
Starting a game: Press any button or insert a card into either of the bank's two slots. Each player starts the game with M15 Millions in their account. When a player's card is inserted into the bank, the card number is shown on the screen first, followed by the balance of that player's account.
Receiving and Paying Money
Receiving Money
You receive money:
- When you pass the Go space.
- When you collect rent.
- Through Chance and Community Chest cards.
- When you sell houses and hotels.
- When you mortgage properties.
- Because a player has gone bankrupt.
The banker gives you money:
- If a Chance or Community Chest card says so.
- When you pass the Go space.
- If you sell houses or hotels.
- If you mortgage a property.
To do this, the banker inserts your card into the left slot of the bank and your balance is shown on the screen. The banker enters the amount you must receive. When your balance has increased on the screen, the banker removes the card from the bank.
Paying Money
You must pay:
- Rent.
- Properties.
- Taxes.
- If a Chance or Community Chest card says so.
- Houses and hotels.
- To lift a mortgage.
- To get out of jail.
- Debts to another player.
You pay the banker:
- If a Chance or Community Chest card says so.
- To buy properties, houses and hotels.
- To pay a tax.
- To redeem a mortgage.
- To get out of jail.
To do this, the banker inserts your card into the right slot of the bank. The banker then enters the amount you must pay. When the balance has decreased on the screen, the banker removes the card from the bank.
Transactions Between Players
To pay another player, or to receive money from another player (for rent, bankruptcy or the sale of a property), the banker inserts the debit card into the right slot of the bank and the credit card into the left slot. The balance of the player who must pay is shown on the screen. The banker enters the amount to be paid. The payer's balance decreases. Once the transfer has taken place, the beneficiary's balance increases. The banker can then remove both cards from the bank.
Electronic Bank Shutdown
The electronic banking unit switches itself off after 1 minute without activity. Press any button to reactivate it. The players' account balances are always stored in the bank, so you can stop a game in progress and resume it later, and your money stays in your account.
Banker's Tips
- Always follow the direction of the arrow on the card when you insert it into the bank.
- If the bank does not beep when you insert a card, check that you inserted it the right way round.
- If you have entered the wrong amount, press "C" and enter the new amount. You can only correct an error while the card is still inserted in the bank.
- You can enter a maximum of M20 Millions and a minimum of M10 thousand at one time.
Game Steps
Buying a Property
There are 3 types of property:
- Streets.
- Transport companies.
- Energy companies.
If you land on a property that belongs to nobody, you may buy it. If you decide to buy it, the banker debits your card with the price shown on the space. In exchange, as proof of the purchase, you receive a property card, which you keep face up in front of you. If you decide not to buy it, the banker opens an auction instead. See Deals / Auction Sales below.
Owning a property allows you to collect rent from every player who lands on your streets. When you own all the streets of one colour, i.e. as soon as you have the monopoly, you may build on those streets and collect higher rents!
Deals / Auction Sales
If you decide not to buy a property on which you have just landed, the banker must immediately open an auction, which must start at a minimum amount of M10 thousand.
To do this, the banker presses the DEAL button on the bank; the red light flashes. When you hear a beep and the red light flashes faster, hurry up: the auctions are about to end and a decision must be reached! When the light flashes green, the player who made the highest bid wins the right to buy the property at that price. However, if everyone agrees before the light turns green, the banker may stop the timer by pressing the DEAL button.
The time allowed by the bank varies randomly between 13 and 50 seconds.
Every player may take part in the auction, including the banker and the player who landed on the property being auctioned, if they do not want to pay the price shown.
The auction starts at the lowest price shown on the property card.
Paying Rent
If you land on a property that belongs to another player, that player may claim rent from you (unless the property is mortgaged). The owner of the property must claim the rent before the next player rolls the dice. The amount of rent is shown on the property card and varies according to the number of buildings on the property.
If all the streets of one colour belong to the same player, the rent is doubled for each property of that group that has no building yet. However, an owner who holds a whole group cannot receive this doubled rent if one of the properties in the group is mortgaged.
Energy Companies
Energy companies are bought and sold at auction in the same way as properties.
If you land on an energy company owned by another player, that player may ask you to pay rent according to the number of points rolled on the dice. If the owner has only one of the two energy companies, the rent is 4 times the total of your dice, multiplied by 10,000. If the owner has both energy companies, you must pay 10 times the total of your dice, multiplied by 10,000.
Transport Companies
Transport companies are bought and sold at auction in the same way as properties.
If you land on a transport company owned by another player, you must pay the amount shown on the property card. This amount varies according to the number of transport companies owned by that player.
Buying a House
You must own all the streets of one colour to buy houses. The price of a house is shown on the property card.
You may buy houses (or hotels) on your turn or between the turns of other players. You must build evenly: you may not build a second house on a street until you have built a house on every street of that group.
You may buy as many buildings as your finances allow! No house may be built if any property in the group is mortgaged.
Buying a Hotel
To buy a hotel, you must have four houses on every street of a colour group. Exchange the four houses for one hotel; the banker then debits your card with the price shown on the property card. You may build only one hotel per property.
Housing Crisis
If there are no more houses left to sell, you must wait until other players return houses to the bank before you can buy any.
If only a limited number of houses or hotels remain and two or more players want to buy them, they are sold at auction and awarded to the highest bidder. The banker presses DEAL to start the auction (see Deals / Auction Sales, page 8). The auction starts at the lowest price shown on the property card.
Raising Money
If you need money, you can raise it by:
- Selling houses or hotels.
- Mortgaging properties.
- Selling properties, energy companies or transport companies to another player at a price agreed between you (even if the property is mortgaged).
Selling a Property
You may sell a street, an energy company or a transport company to another player at a price agreed between you. However, no street may be sold to another player if there are buildings on any street of its group. If you want to sell these streets, you must first sell all the buildings on them to the bank.
Buildings (houses and hotels) are sold to the bank at half their value, as shown on the property card. They may be sold on your turn or between the turns of other players.
Selling houses: Houses must be sold evenly, in the same way they were bought.
Selling hotels: The banker credits your card with half the price of the hotel, plus half the price of the four houses given in exchange when the hotel was bought.
Hotels may also be exchanged with the bank for houses in order to recover money. To do this, you exchange your hotel for four houses, and the banker credits your card with half the value of the hotel.
Mortgages
Mortgaging a property: First sell all the buildings on that property to the bank. Then turn the property card face down and receive from the banker the mortgage value printed on the back of that card. You remain in possession of a mortgaged property. No other player can pay the mortgage on your behalf. You may not collect rent on a mortgaged property, but you continue to collect rent on the other properties of the same group.
Lifting a mortgage: You may lift a mortgage by paying the mortgage value plus 10% interest (rounded to the nearest thousand if necessary). Once the mortgage is lifted, you may turn the property card face up in front of you again.
Selling a mortgaged property: You may sell a mortgaged property to another player at a price agreed between you. The buyer may then either lift the mortgage by paying the bank the mortgage value, or keep the mortgage. In the second case, the buyer first pays the bank 10% interest (rounded to the nearest thousand if necessary) on the mortgage value, and pays the mortgage value itself later, during the game.
Bankruptcy
If you owe money to the bank or to another player and cannot pay, you are declared bankrupt and eliminated.
Debt to the bank: In this case, hand your property cards to the bank, which puts them up for auction immediately and individually. To do this, the banker presses the DEAL button to start the auction (see Deals / Auction Sales, page 8). The auction starts at the lowest price shown on the property card.
Finally, return your "Get Out of Jail Free" cards to the bottom of their respective decks.
Debt to another player: In this case, that player receives the balance of your bank card, your property cards and your "Get Out of Jail Free" cards.
Chance and Community Chest Spaces
When you land on one of these spaces, take the top card from the corresponding deck. Follow the instructions on the card, then place it face down at the bottom of the deck. If you draw a "Get Out of Jail Free" card, you may keep it until you decide to use it or sell it to another player at a price agreed between you.
If a card tells you to move to another space, go there in the direction of the arrow. If you pass the Go space, receive M2 Millions. Do not collect that sum if the card tells you to go to jail or to go back.
Free Parking
If you land on this space, you may rest until your next turn or carry on with your transactions normally (for example, collecting rent or building).
Passing the Go Space Twice in a Row
It is possible to receive M2 Millions twice during the same turn. For example, if you draw a Chance or Community Chest card just after passing the Go space, and that card tells you to "Advance to Go", the banker must insert your card into the bank and press the arrow button; then take your card out, reinsert it, and press the same button again.
Prison
Going to Jail
You are sent to jail if:
- You land on the "Go to Jail" space.
- You draw a Chance or Community Chest card that tells you to go to jail.
- You roll three doubles in a row.
Your turn ends when you are sent to jail. Move to the Jail space, and do not collect the M2 Millions if you pass the Go space on the way there.
While you are in jail, you may collect your rent, provided your properties are not mortgaged.
Getting Out of Jail
To get out of jail, you must do one of the following:
- Pay a fine of M500 thousand and play on your next turn.
- Use a "Get Out of Jail Free" card, if you have one.
- Roll the dice and roll a double, on your turn.
If you have not rolled a double after three turns, pay the banker M500 thousand, then move your token according to your roll of the dice.
Just Visiting
If you are not sent to jail but land on the Jail space, you are just visiting and suffer no penalty.
