Game in Brief

Buy and sell company shares to grow your wealth, because the richest player is the winner of the game.

Start from the Start square and roll the dice to move your token around the board. When you stop on a company square, you may introduce the company to the stock exchange by buying shares from the bank and becoming its President. If you decide not to do so, the company is sold at auction to the highest bidder. During the game, the other players may also buy shares of a company already listed on the stock exchange, and try to dethrone its President by acquiring a greater number of shares than he holds.

When a player stops on a listed company, he must pay interest to the bank. Of course, the President of the company is not affected by this. The construction of offices and head offices considerably increases the interest to be paid to the owners of the companies in the same group. If you need cash, you may sell your shares to the bank or trade them with other players.

The central computer facilitates the exchange of shares: it permanently records the share price, the certificates of ownership and the interest. It also keeps track of offices and head offices.

Players receive dividends when they reach or pass the Start square. Dividends vary according to the companies owned and the interest received.

You must follow the instructions on the Bull Market and Bear Market cards. Sometimes you will be sent to jail.

Object of the Game

To be the only player who does not go bankrupt, or to be the richest player when the game ends, as agreed between the players.

Contents

1 central computer, 1 game board, 6 tokens, 22 President cards, 4 Media cards, 2 Leisure cards, 16 Bull Market cards, 16 Bear Market cards, 1 pack of Monopoly money, 32 offices, 12 head offices, 2 dice.

Note: in the scan, the printed counts of offices and head offices are partly covered by handwritten pen marks. They are transcribed here as 32 and 12, as they appear to be printed.

Setup

  1. Place the offices, head offices, President cards, Media cards, Leisure cards and banknotes, sorted by value, in the different storage trays.

  2. Separate the Bull Market cards from the Bear Market cards. Shuffle each pack and place them face down on the squares of the game board provided for this purpose.

  3. Each player selects a token and places it on the Start square.

  4. Choose one player to be the banker. The banker gives each player the equivalent of €1,500 M, made up as follows: 2 × €500, 4 × €100, 1 × €50, 1 × €20, 2 × €10, 1 × €5, 5 × €1.

In addition to managing the banknotes, the banker is responsible for the President cards, Media cards, Leisure cards, offices and head offices until they are sold. The banker handles all money involved in transactions, share purchases and sales, pays salaries and bonuses, and collects taxes, gains and losses. The bank can never go bankrupt; if necessary, it may issue promissory notes on plain paper. During auctions, the banker acts as auctioneer.

  5. Choose another player to be in charge of the central computer.

  6. All players roll both dice. The player with the highest total begins the game, and play proceeds clockwise.

The Central Computer

The Keys

0–9

  • Used to enter the code of a company, the information relating to share purchases, and changes to offices and head offices.
  • Keys 1 to 6 also represent the six tokens (the hat, the car, the dog, the shoe, the iron and the boat). Choose one of them. During play, simply press the key matching your token so the computer knows which token to move.

BANK PURCHASE (ACHAT BANQUE)

Used to introduce a company on the stock exchange, or to buy shares from the bank.

INTEREST (INTÉRÊTS)

Shows the amount you must pay the bank when you stop on a listed company of which you are not the President.

CANCEL (ANNULER)

Cancels a transaction. The computer reacts by emitting a sound.

Note: if you press a wrong key while using the game, the computer signals it with a sound.

RESET

Press this button with a pen to completely restart the unit.

The Screen

Company (SOCIÉTÉ)

The numbers 01 to 22 in the left-hand column correspond to the 22 companies on the board.

When you make transactions concerning a company, enter its code on the computer using keys 0 to 9.

Note: for companies numbered 1 to 9, always enter the 0 before the code, for example '01', '02'...

Offices and Head Offices (BUREAUX ET SIÈGES SOCIAUX)

This column shows the number of offices built for a company. They are represented by small squares, up to a total of four. Head offices are shown by a small triangle.

The Bank (LA BANQUE)

This column shows the number of shares available for sale per company, this number being between 1 and 9.

Note: all shares are sold in units of one million.

The Tokens (LES PIONS)

In the column under your token, you will find the number of shares you own in each company. If this figure is underlined, it means that you are the President of the company.

Money (€M and +/-)

The €M column is associated with the following information:

  • the value of shares
  • the amount to pay to buy shares or to introduce a company on the stock exchange
  • the amount to pay for the construction of offices and head offices on a company
  • the amount you receive for the sale of offices or head offices
  • the interest to be paid to the bank
  • the amount the bank owes you when you pass the Start square

The +/- column shows recent changes in share prices. The + and – signs show whether the bank owes money to you or you owe money to the bank, depending on the transactions you carry out.

Market Screens

During the game, the computer continuously scrolls through the four market screens. There is one screen for each of the four sides of the board.

The market screens show:

  • the company code
  • the number of offices and head offices built
  • the number of shares held by the bank and available for sale
  • the number of shares held by each player
  • the share price, followed by a + or – sign

To go to a particular market screen, simply enter the code of the company you are looking for, or press the Confirm key to reach the market screen you want.

Example, as printed: company 12 has 2 offices. The bank holds 2 shares, the dog token holds 5 shares and is President, and the iron token holds 2 shares. The current share price is €140 M and has recently risen.

Transaction Screens

When you wish to carry out a transaction, such as buying or selling shares, replacing offices with head offices, or paying interest or receiving dividends, press the corresponding key and the computer displays the required screen.

When you are on the required screen, a series of symbols flashes and you must enter the parameters of the transaction. You must then either confirm or cancel the transaction. The computer then returns to the market screen.

The Game

Refer to the back of the booklet for a quick overview of the rules of play.

On your turn, roll both dice and move your token the number of squares shown, in the direction of the arrows (clockwise). Several tokens may occupy the same square at once. Depending on the square you land on, you may:

  • introduce a company on the stock exchange
  • buy Leisure or Media cards
  • pay interest on a listed company, or on Leisure or Media cards
  • pay taxes
  • draw a Bull Market or Bear Market card
  • receive dividends
  • rest on the Free Parking square
  • go to jail for a simple visit
  • go to jail

If you land on one of the 22 companies that is not yet listed on the stock exchange, you have the opportunity to buy the majority of its shares and become its President. 5 of the 9 shares are automatically assigned to you. Enter the information into the computer and take the corresponding President card. See the section "Introducing a Company on the Stock Exchange" on page 8.

If you land on a company that is already listed on the stock exchange, do not forget to pay interest to the bank and enter all the details into the computer. See the section "Paying Interest to the Bank" on page 8.

Doubles

If you roll doubles, move your token the number of squares shown and continue playing according to the square you land on. Then roll the dice again. If you roll three consecutive doubles, you must go directly to jail.

Acquiring Additional Shares

If, at the end of your turn, you have not obtained any new President, Leisure or Media cards, you have three options:

  • buy up to two shares from the bank of the company on whose square your token stands, provided you are on a company square and shares are available for purchase; or
  • buy from the bank one share of any listed company; or
  • decide not to buy any shares.

Note: if you receive a President, Leisure or Media card after an exchange with another player, you may buy additional shares. For how to buy additional shares, see page 12.

During Your Turn

At any time during your turn, you may choose to carry out one or more of the following actions:

  • replace your offices with head offices
  • sell some or all of your shares to the bank
  • exchange shares, Leisure, Media or Chance (Get Out of Jail Free) cards with other players

You may not buy shares from the bank and sell shares of the same company to the bank during the same turn.

At the end of your turn, pass the dice to the next player.

During Another Player's Turn

While it is another player's turn, you may only:

  • receive interest for Leisure cards
  • sell Leisure and Media cards to the bank
  • negotiate with other players
  • take part in auctions

If you win an auction but do not have enough money to pay, you may sell some of your shares to the bank, or reduce the number of offices and head offices you own.

Introducing a Company on the Stock Exchange

If you land on a new company that has not yet been introduced on the stock exchange, you have priority to introduce it. To introduce a company on the stock exchange, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the BANK PURCHASE key.
  2. Press the key corresponding to your token.
  3. Enter the code of the company you wish to introduce on the stock exchange.

Note: the company code always consists of two digits, from 01 to 22.

  1. Pay the bank the price indicated by the computer. This is the price shown on the company square of the game board.
  2. Press the CONFIRM key to validate the transaction. The computer then automatically transfers 5 of the 9 available shares to you. The figure 5 is then underlined, which means you are the President of this company. As soon as you confirm, the computer returns to the market screens.
  3. Take the corresponding President card and place it in front of you, face up.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake, or if you need to receive cash before continuing your turn.

Example, as printed: the hat token introduces company 13 on the stock exchange for €220 M. It is automatically assigned 5 shares and becomes President. The bank therefore keeps 4 shares, each now worth €48 M.

If You Decide Not to Introduce a Company on the Stock Exchange

In this case, the bank must immediately open an auction, starting at the price set by a player wishing to buy the company, and award the company to the highest bidder. Even if you refused to buy the company at its initial price, you may take part in the auction.

After the auction, use the computer to enter the information as described above. The player who wins the auction pays the bank the amount of the winning bid, and not the amount indicated by the computer.

Note: if no player wishes to take part in the auction, you may introduce the company on the stock exchange free of charge. You receive 5 shares and the President card.

Paying Interest to the Bank

If you land on a listed company, you must pay interest to the bank, not to the player who is its President.

If all the companies belonging to a group of the same colour have the same President, the computer automatically doubles the interest on the companies of that group, provided they have no offices or head offices yet.

Note: the interest you must pay will be lower if you hold some shares of the company on whose square you stopped. You pay no interest if you are the President of that company.

To pay interest, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the INTEREST key.
  2. Press the key corresponding to your token.
  3. Enter the two digits of the company code.
  4. The computer then displays the amount you owe the bank.
  5. Pay this amount to the bank and press the CONFIRM key. The computer then returns to the market screens.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake during your transaction, or if you need cash to continue.

Receiving Dividends

Each time you pass or land on the Start square, you receive dividends from the bank. Dividends consist of a fixed part of €200 M and a variable part corresponding to the interest you receive each time another player lands on a company whose shares you own.

The computer automatically calculates the dividends due to you each time you pass the Start square.

To receive your dividends, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the START key.
  2. Press the key corresponding to your token.
  3. The computer then displays the amount you should receive.
  4. Take the equivalent of this sum from the bank and press the CONFIRM key. The computer then returns to the market screens.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake.

Shares held by the bank do not give rise to dividends. Therefore, the more shares the bank holds, the higher the dividends paid to the other players. (Transcribed as printed.)

Example, as printed: the iron token stops on company 14, whose car token is President. The interest the iron token must pay amounts to €445 M.

Example, as printed: the bank pays €525 M in dividends to the dog token.

Stopping on a Leisure or Media Square

When you stop on one of the Leisure squares (Club Med / Accor) or on one of the Media squares (Europe 2 / Canal Plus / RTL 2 / Publicis), you may buy it, provided it is still available. Pay the price indicated on the square to the bank and place the corresponding card face up in front of you. This type of property does not give rise to the issue of shares.

If you do not wish to buy it, the bank puts the property up for auction and awards it to the highest bidder. You may take part in the auction. If there is no higher bid, the property is handed to you free of charge.

If a Leisure square already belongs to another player, you must pay that player interest directly, according to the dice roll. If the owner holds one Leisure square, the interest you owe is equal to 10 times the total of the dice. If the owner holds both Leisure squares, you owe them an amount equal to 20 times the total of the dice.

If a Media square belongs to another player, you must pay that player the amount of interest shown on the President card. This amount varies according to the number of Media properties that player owns.

Note: the computer is not used for Leisure and Media squares.

Buying and Selling Media or Leisure Squares

At any time during the game, you may sell some or all of your Leisure and Media properties to the bank for half their value. Once this type of property has been sold back to the bank, any player who stops on one of these squares may buy it at its initial price. Otherwise the bank puts it up for auction.

Two players may decide to trade Leisure or Media cards between them, at a price they agree on.

Stopping on a Bull Market or Bear Market Square

If you stop on one of these squares, take a card from the top of the corresponding pack. Follow the instructions written on the card immediately, before returning it to the bottom of the pack. If you draw a "Get Out of Jail Free" card, you may keep it or, if you wish, sell it to another player at a price agreed between you.

This category of card may tell you to move your token to another square. If you pass the Start square during your move, you receive dividends. You do not pass the Start square when you are sent to jail.

Stopping on a Tax Square

When you stop on a tax square, you must pay the amount shown on the board to the bank.

Free Parking

If you stop on this square, your turn ends there. You incur no penalty and you may carry out transactions as usual. For example, you may buy and sell shares, or build offices and head offices on the properties you own.

Jail

You are sent to jail if:

  • you land on the Go to Jail square; or
  • you draw a card instructing you to "Go directly to jail"; or
  • you roll doubles three times in a row.

Your turn ends when you are sent to jail. You do not pass the Start square, wherever you are on the game board, and you may not buy additional shares.

To get out of jail, you may:

  • pay a fine of €50 M and leave on the next turn; or
  • buy a "Get Out of Jail Free" card from another player at a price agreed between you, and leave on the next turn; or
  • use a "Get Out of Jail Free" card, if you have one; or
  • for three turns, try to roll doubles. If you roll doubles during one of these turns, leave jail and move the number of squares shown on the dice.

If you have not rolled doubles after the three turns, pay €50 M to the bank and move the number of squares indicated by the dice.

While in jail, you may carry out transactions, for example buying and selling shares, or building offices and head offices on the companies you own.

If you are not sent to jail, but during your move you stop on the Jail square, you are on a Simple Visit and this entails no penalty.

Investing in Companies: Building Offices and Head Offices

When you are at the head of a monopoly, that is, when you are the President of all the companies of the same colour, you may build offices or head offices on the companies of that group. This increases the share price, increases the interest your opponents pay when they stop on these squares, and therefore increases your dividends when you pass the Start square.

The price of each new office is shown on the corresponding President card. You may buy as many offices as you wish during your turn, but you must build them evenly across the group. For example, you may not build a second office on a company in a colour group before you have built a first office on every company in that group, and so on, up to a maximum of 5 offices or 1 head office per company.

Example, as printed: screen 1 shows the number of offices held by the car token on companies 12 to 14. Screen 2 shows the new number of offices the car token holds. It must pay €750 M in total for its new offices.

To build offices and head offices, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the OFFICES key.
  2. Enter the code of the company on which you wish to build.
  3. The current number of offices starts to flash, and you must enter the number of offices you wish to have.
  4. When you have entered the new number of offices, the next company of the same group flashes, and so on up to the last company of that group.
  5. When you have finished, pay the bank the total amount shown by the computer and press CONFIRM. The computer then returns to the market screens.
  6. Take the offices you have just built from the bank and place them on the corresponding companies. If you reach the maximum number of offices, you must replace them with a head office.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake, or if you need cash before continuing.

Reducing the Number of Your Offices and Head Offices

During your turn, you may sell all or part of your offices to the bank for half their initial value. The sale, like the purchase, must be made evenly across each company of the same group. You may also replace a head office with offices if you need cash.

To reduce the number of offices and head offices on your companies, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the OFFICES key.
  2. Enter the code of the company concerned.
  3. The number of offices for this company flashes on the screen, and you must enter the number of offices you wish to keep.
  4. The next company of the group then flashes, and so on up to the last company of that group.
  5. After deciding the new number of offices you wish to keep, take the amount shown on the screen from the bank and press CONFIRM, after which the computer returns to the market screens.
  6. Remove the offices or head offices sold from the game board and return them to the bank.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake.

Example, as printed: screen 1 shows the number of offices held by the car token on companies 12 to 14. Screen 2 shows the new number of offices the car token holds. It receives €150 M from the bank for the offices it has sold.

Building Shortage

If there are no longer enough offices or head offices at the bank, you must wait for other players to return some before you can buy them. Likewise, if you need to sell your head offices, you must wait until the bank has enough offices to take them back.

Note:

  • offices and head offices cannot be resold directly to other players;
  • you may change the number of offices only during your own turn, unless you need cash during an auction sale.

Buying Additional Shares from the Bank

To buy additional shares from the bank, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the BANK PURCHASE key.
  2. Press the key corresponding to your token.
  3. Enter the code of the company whose shares you wish to buy.
  4. Enter the number of shares you wish to buy (one or two).
  5. Pay the bank the price shown on the screen.
  6. Press CONFIRM to validate this step. The computer then transfers the number of shares you have bought to your account, after which it returns to the market screens.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake, or if you need cash before continuing.

When you buy shares from the bank, you will notice that the amount you must pay is slightly higher than the amount shown on the market screens. This is because your demand for shares causes their price to rise. If your purchase breaks a monopoly held by an opponent, the share price will fall, and the price you finally pay will be lower than the price shown on the market screen.

Selling Shares to the Bank

You may sell all or part of your shares to the bank at any time during your turn.

To sell shares to the bank, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the SELL key.
  2. Press the key corresponding to your token.
  3. Enter the code corresponding to the company.
  4. Enter the number of shares you wish to sell.
  5. The bank pays you the amount shown on the screen.
  6. Press CONFIRM to validate the sale. The computer then transfers the shares to the bank, after which it returns to the market screens.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake.

When you sell shares to the bank, you receive exactly the amount shown on the screen. After a sale, as a general rule, the share price falls. Conversely, it rises if this allows one of your opponents to establish a monopoly.

When all the shares of a listed company have been sold to the bank, the President card must also be returned. If the next player stops on this type of company, it may again be introduced on the stock exchange, like any other company.

Buying Shares from Another Player

At any time during the game, players may agree to trade a certain number of shares at a price they agree on between themselves.

To buy shares from another player, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the BUY PLAYERS key.
  2. Press the key corresponding to the token of the buying player.
  3. Then press the key corresponding to the token of the selling player.
  4. Enter the code of the company concerned by the transaction.
  5. Enter the number of shares being sold.
  6. The two players then discuss the price to be paid.
  7. Press CONFIRM to validate the transaction. The computer then carries out the transfer of shares automatically and returns to the market screens.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake.

Example, as printed: the car token sells 3 of its shares in company 13 to the bank for €495 M. It remains President, and the new share price is then €137 M.

Change of Presidency

If one of the players obtains more shares of a company than the current President holds, he becomes the new President. If, on the other hand, the shares are divided equally between two players, there is no change of President.

A change of President occurs in one of two cases:

  • the new President buys shares from the bank or from another player; or
  • the former President sells shares to the bank or to another player.

In both cases, the new President receives the President card from the former President and places it face up in front of him. The computer records the transaction by placing a bar under the number of shares now held by the new President in the company concerned.

Note: only players can become President, never the bank, whatever number of shares it holds.

Example, as printed: the car token, who is President of company 14, sells 3 shares to the bank for €891 M. The bank also pays this player €750 M for the forced sale of the offices of this group of companies. The dog token, with 2 shares in company 14, becomes the new President. The new share price is then €68 M.

Breaking a Monopoly

If a change of presidency brings an end to a monopoly, the computer automatically sells the offices and head offices back to the bank for half their value. It then displays the amount owed to the former President for the forced sale of its buildings, and corrects the number of offices on the screen. The former President removes the offices and head offices of the corresponding companies from the game board and returns them to the bank.

Tie

If the former President loses the majority of shares, and several other players are tied for the presidency, the computer awards the presidency according to the tokens held by the current President and the claimants:

  • the hat yields to the car;
  • the car yields to the dog;
  • the dog yields to the shoe;
  • the shoe yields to the iron;
  • the iron yields to the boat;
  • the boat yields to the hat.

Reviewing the Last Transaction on Screen

To review the very last validated transaction, simply press the REVIEW key. The computer automatically returns to the previous screen. Press CONFIRM to return to the market screens.

Note: you can only go back one screen, and you cannot modify any transaction.

Removing a Player from the Game

If you have just gone bankrupt, or if you simply wish to withdraw from the game, proceed as follows:

  1. Press and hold the REMOVE A PLAYER FROM THE GAME key for at least two seconds.
  2. Press the key corresponding to your token.
  3. Press CONFIRM. The computer then transfers your share portfolio to the bank and returns to the market screens.
  4. Remove your offices and head offices from the game board and return them to the bank. Pass your President cards to the new majority shareholders. Return any Leisure or Media cards to the bank.

Note: press the CANCEL key if you make a mistake.

Bankruptcy

If you owe the bank or another player more money than you can raise by selling or exchanging your assets, you are declared bankrupt or eliminated from the game. You may not borrow money from the bank, or even from another player.

If you owe a debt to the bank, the bank recovers all your cash and your Leisure and Media cards. If you hold a "Get Out of Jail Free" card, return it to the bottom of the corresponding pack. Then you must withdraw from the game. To do this, see the section "Removing a Player from the Game" above.

If your bankruptcy is due to an amount of interest that you are unable to pay to your opponent, the bank settles it. You simply need to enter the exact amount and confirm the payment on the computer. See the section "Paying Interest to the Bank" on page 8.

In the very rare case where you go bankrupt because you landed on another player's Leisure square, do not use the REMOVE A PLAYER FROM THE GAME function. Instead, sell all your shares, your offices and head offices, and your Leisure and Media cards to the bank. Remove all your offices and head offices from the game board and return them to the bank. Pass all your President cards to the new majority shareholders.

The player who made you bankrupt takes over your cash and your "Get Out of Jail Free" cards, but receives no compensation for the unpaid debts.

When there are only two players left and one of them goes bankrupt, the remaining player wins the game.

The TOTAL Key

To display the number of shares of each player, at the current market value, including the value of offices and head offices at purchase price, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the TOTAL key.
  2. Press CONFIRM or CANCEL to return to the market screens.

Reminder: to obtain the total wealth of a player, add to the total shown the player's cash, as well as the value of the Leisure and Media squares they own, at the price shown on the board.

Winning the Game

The last player still in the game when all the others have gone bankrupt is the winner.

If you have agreed to play for a set time, press the TOTAL key at the end of the agreed time. Add to the amount shown each player's cash, as well as the value of the Leisure and Media squares, at the prices shown on the board. The richest player wins the game.

Care of the Unit

  • Handle the game with care.
