What's Different About MONOPOLY Knockout?

It's a token showdown!

There are no dice in MONOPOLY KNOCKOUT, and you don't start with cash! Instead, you'll play in rounds, taking turns sliding tokens and trying to land them on properties.

At the end of each round, you'll collect—or pay—cash based on where your tokens ended up. So aim and slide carefully, landing your tokens on the best properties and knocking other players into Jail—or totally off the board!

Play in teams!

If you have more than 4 players, play in teams! Just grab a set of tokens and take turns sliding them down the board. You'll share the cash you earn and win—or lose—together!

Set It Up

  1. Place the gameboard on a table with the In Jail card and reference card next to it. Sort the money into piles and place it to the side: that's the Bank!

  2. Choose someone to be the Banker. The Banker will pass out any cash players earn at the end of each round.

  3. Banker, place ₥500 on the table above Free Parking.

  4. For 2-4 players: each player takes a set of four matching colored tokens and their matching turn marker.

For 5-8 players: split up into teams of two. Each team takes a set of four matching colored tokens, and team members will take turns sliding tokens from their team's set.

  5. Place any extra token sets and their matching turn markers out of play.

Who Goes First?

Each round, a different player will go first. By the time the game ends, each player will have gone first one time.

  1. Place the turn markers facedown, and shuffle them.
  2. Banker, choose one turn marker, flip it over, and slide it into the top spot in the reference card.
  3. Do the same for the rest of the turn markers until they're all in the reference card. This is your turn order for the first round!

At the end of each round, you'll adjust the turn order as shown in GET READY FOR A NEW ROUND.

Let's Play

  • Play as many rounds as you have players (or teams, if you're playing that way). You'll switch who goes first at the end of each round—the game ends when each player (or team) has gone first once!
  • You'll collect cash at the end of each round.
  • Each round, take turns sliding one token at a time based on the reference card.
  • When each player has slid all four of their tokens, the round ends.

The player with the most cash at the end of the game wins!

On Your Turn

  1. Stand at the end of the board and place one of your tokens behind GO!
  2. Slide your token, aiming for a space you want to land on.
    • If your token slides off the board, or you knock another token off the board, those tokens are out of play for this round.
    • If you land on Go to Jail, immediately place your token on the In Jail card. (See IN JAIL?).

If your token lands on any other space, leave it there until the end of the round—and hope no one knocks it off the board! The player whose turn marker is next slides one of their tokens, and so on, until every player has slid all their tokens.

In Jail?

There are two ways to get out of Jail:

  1. Pay ₥100 to Free Parking immediately after you land on Go to Jail and slide that token again.

    OR

  2. Remove it at the end of the round for free.

If a token ever lands between spaces or falls over, whatever space most of the token is on is the space where it lands. Don't forget to stand your fallen token back up!

More About the Board Spaces

Chance

Chance lets you slide your token again. This is great at the end of a round because you have a final chance to knock players off the board or land somewhere that'll get you cash! If you land on Chance again, you do not get a third slide.

Railroad

Move your token to any unoccupied property. Be strategic! You might be able to make a color set or stop another player from collecting cash for that property if your turn marker is before theirs in the reference card!

Properties

Aim for these! And go for color sets to collect even more cash! Remember: only one player and token can collect cash for a property, and the player whose turn marker is higher in the reference card collects first.

Houses

House spaces let you collect double the cash for one of the properties you collected for this round! You may double your cash only once per round. If you have two tokens on House spaces, you can collect cash for only one of those tokens.

Income Tax

Pay ₥100 to Free Parking for each property you collected cash for during that round. You pay only once, even if you have more than one token on this space.

Free Parking

At the start of the game, and whenever it is empty at the end of a round, the Banker places ₥500 on the table above Free Parking. The player with the most tokens on Free Parking at the end of a round takes the cash above that space! If players are tied for the number of tokens on Free Parking, they split the cash. If cash doesn't split evenly, leave any extra above the space.

Go to Jail

If you land on—or get knocked onto—Go to Jail, immediately place your token on the In Jail card. To get out of Jail, you have two options:

  1. Immediately pay ₥100 to Free Parking. Then grab your token and slide again!

    OR

  2. Wait until the end of the round, then place your token in front of you. You don't have to pay to get out of Jail at the end of a round.

End & Score the Round

Once each player has slid all four of their tokens, do each step below in turn order based on the reference card.

For example: the player who went first does step 1, then the second player does step 1, and so on.

1. Re-slide your tokens on Chance, in turn order.

Move the token from Chance to GO and slide it again! If it lands on Chance again or is pushed there, leave it—don't slide again.

2. Move your tokens on Railroad spaces to any unoccupied property you'd like!

You may not move tokens to Houses, Free Parking, Chance, Jail, or Luxury Tax.

3. Collect cash and pay taxes.

Don't move your tokens until you've done the following, in this order:

Collect for properties! Collect the amount shown on the gameboard for properties your tokens are on. Only one player and token may collect cash for any given property.

  • If your token is on the same property as another player's, and your turn marker is higher on the reference card than theirs, you get the cash!
  • If you have two tokens on the same property, you collect cash for only one of those tokens.

Collect color set bonuses! If you collected cash for each property in a color set, for example, all three red spaces (Illinois Avenue, Kentucky Avenue, and Indiana Avenue), collect cash for all properties and the bonus value, as shown below and at the bottom of the gameboard.

BrownLight BluePinkOrangeRedYellowGreenBlue
₥400₥900₥1200₥1200₥1500₥1500₥1800₥2000

Collect double for a House! If you have any tokens on either House space, choose one of the properties you collected cash for, and collect that cash again for a total of double the amount on the gameboard.

Pay taxes! If you have any tokens on the Luxury Tax space, pay ₥100 to Free Parking for each property you earned cash for this round. You'll only pay once, no matter how many tokens you have on Luxury Tax.

4. Collect for Free Parking!

After players have resolved each step above, the player with the most tokens on Free Parking collects the cash above that space. If there's a tie, the tied players split the cash evenly—if it doesn't split evenly, leave the extra there for the next round.

Get Ready for a New Round

  1. Players take all their tokens, including those in Jail, and place them in front of them.
  2. Banker, if all the cash on Free Parking was claimed, place ₥500 there. If there's any cash still there, leave it for the next round and don't add any more.
  3. Adjust the turn order by removing the top turn marker from the reference card and placing it below the rest, moving all other markers up as you do so.

The End of the Game

Once you've played as many rounds as there are players (or teams if you're playing that way), the game ends.

After ending the final round, all players count up their cash. The player (or team) with the most cash wins!

Tips & Tricks

Go for the knockout!

If another player's token is on a property you want—or you just don't like where they've landed on the board—try to slide your token into theirs so you knock them off the board, onto Luxury tax, or into Jail!

Sometimes it pays to play it safe!

Notice the properties at the bottom of the gameboard will earn you less cash, but landing your tokens there can make it easier to collect colors sets or create obstacles for players who want properties at the top of the board.

Sometimes it pays to be bold!

If your turn marker is at the top of the reference card, remember, you'll get to collect cash first! Don't be afraid to slide your token onto a property someone else has already landed on!

Remember, nothing is final until the end of a round

So be prepared to change your strategy as you go!

Allow players a second chance.

If you're playing with younger players, players with bad aim, or sore losers, try this: when a player slides their token right off the board, let them take that token and try again (but not if they hit another token!). You might let them do it for free or decide they need to pay ₥100 to Free Parking anytime they want to re-slide!

Example: Ending/Scoring a Round

  1. There are no tokens on Chance, so nobody gets to slide again.
  2. The blue player may move their token on the Railroad to any property and moves it to Atlantic Avenue.
  3. Blue may collect cash first because their turn marker is first in the reference card. Players collect cash in order based on the reference card below: BLUE, RED, GREEN.
    1. Blue has tokens on Atlantic Avenue, Marvin Gardens, and Ventnor Avenue, so they have a color set! They collect ₥750, then an extra ₥1500 for the color set bonus.
    2. Blue also has a token on a House space, so they choose to collect double the value of Atlantic Avenue—that's another ₥250!
    3. Red does not collect for Marvin Gardens because blue's turn was first, and they already collected for Marvin Gardens. Red collects ₥200 for St. James Place.
    4. Green collects ₥100 for Baltic Avenue and pays ₥100 for Luxury Tax. Their third token is off the board and out of play for the round.
  4. Red and green split the cash on Free Parking: they each get ₥250.

Getting Ready for a New Round

  1. Players take all of their tokens, including the red token in Jail, and place them in front of them.
  2. The Banker places ₥500 on Free Parking.
  3. The Banker takes the blue turn marker out of the reference card, moves the red marker up to the top spot, the green marker to the second, and places the blue marker third. For the next round, red slides first!
