What's Different About Monopoly Villains?

Grab the Flames of Power and use your ability!

Each villain token has a unique ability. When you pass GO, grab the Flames of Power ring, and put it on your token. Whenever you have the Flames of Power, you get to use the ability on your character's Power card!

Hire villains to build a truly wicked team!

When you land on a villain contract space, you must hire that villain. If you hire all the villains in a color set, you can build Thickets and Lairs and charge even more rent!

Take villainous shortcuts!

When you land on a Vehicle space, you may move to any property space on the board!

Use Poison Apple cards to scheme against other players!

When you land on a Poison Apple space, draw a Poison Apple card. These let you do things like steal coins from other players or make them skip their next turn.

Set It Up

  1. Choose someone to be the Banker. The Banker's in charge of:

    • The Bank's money
    • Thickets
    • Lairs
    • Property cards
    • Auctions

The Banker can play too but must keep their money separate from the Bank.

  2. Banker, give each player:

    • 5 silver coins (worth 1 coin each)
    • 5 golden coins (worth 5 coins each)

    (Total = 30 coins)

Keep the rest of the money in the box as the Bank.

  3. Shuffle the Chance cards, and place them facedown here.

  4. Shuffle the Poison Apple cards, and place them facedown here.

  5. Each player chooses a character. Place your chosen character token on GO. Place that character's Power card in front of you.

  6. Put the die and the Flames of Power by the gameboard.

Play

How to win

Be the last player with money when all other players have gone bankrupt!

Who goes first?

Each player rolls the die. The highest roller starts, and play moves to the left.

On your turn

  1. Roll the die.
  2. Move your token clockwise that number of spaces.
  3. Where did you land? Carry out the rules of that board space. See THE BOARD SPACES.
  4. Your turn ends. Pass the die to your left.

That's all you need to know, so get going. Look up the spaces as you land on them.

The Board Spaces

There are two types of properties: villain contracts, which come in color sets, and utilities, which are Spells and Potions.

Unowned Properties

When you land on a contract no one owns, you must buy it! Pay the price on the board space, and take that contract card. If you can't afford to pay, you are bankrupt and out of the game! Return any cards to the bottom of the appropriate deck.

When you land on a utility no one owns, you must buy it! Pay the price on the board space, and take that utility card. If you can't afford to pay, you are bankrupt and out of the game! Return any cards to the bottom of the appropriate deck.

Collect color sets!

When you own each contract in a color set:

  • You can double the rent for those contracts!
  • You may build Thickets and Lairs and charge even more rent! See BUILDINGS.

Owned Properties

When you land on a property that someone else owns, the owner must ask you for rent. If they do, you must pay. If they don't ask before the next player rolls the die, you don't have to pay!

Villain Contracts

Pay the rent shown on the contract card.

The printed sheet shows two sample contract cards, Tamatoa and King Candy, which both read:

  • Rent: 1 coin
  • Rent with color set: 2 coins
  • Rent with 1 Thicket: 3 coins
  • Rent with 2 Thickets: 4 coins
  • Rent with 3 Thickets: 5 coins
  • Rent with 4 Thickets: 6 coins
  • Rent with 1 Lair: 10 coins
  • Thickets cost 1 coin each
  • Lairs cost 1 coin each (plus 4 Thickets)

Utilities (Spells and Potions)

Roll the die to determine rent. If the owner has 1 utility, rent is the amount of the die roll. If the owner has 2 utilities, rent is double the die roll.

Action Spaces

GO

When you pass or land on the GO space, collect 2 coins from the Bank, and immediately take the Flames of Power! Place them on your token. You can now use your character's unique ability!

Chance and Poison Apple

Take the top card from the matching deck. If the card tells you you may keep it until you're ready to use it, do so. Otherwise, read it aloud, and immediately do what it says. Return cards to the bottom of the appropriate deck after you use them.

Vehicles

When you land on a Vehicle space, you may choose to move to any property on the board. Follow the rules of the space where you land. If you pass the GO space, DO NOT collect 2 coins from the Bank or take the Flames of Power. If you have the Flames of Power, your ability does not apply to any characters you pass.

Go to Jail

Move your token to the In Jail space immediately! Do not collect 2 coins for passing GO. Your turn is then over. You may still collect rent, bid during auctions, buy Thickets and Lairs, and trade while you are in Jail.

How do I get out of Jail?

You have 3 options:

  1. Pay 5 coins at the start of your next turn, then roll and move as normal.
  2. Use a Get Out of Jail Free card at the start of your next turn if you have one (or buy one from another player). Put the card at the bottom of the appropriate deck, then roll and move.
  3. Roll a 6 on your next turn. If you do, you're free! Use the roll to move, and that's the end of your turn.

You can use up to three turns to try for a 6. If you don't roll a 6 by your third turn in Jail, pay 5 coins, and use your last roll to move.

Free Parking

Relax! Nothing happens.

Just Visiting

Don't worry. If you land here, put your token in the Just Visiting section.

Character Powers

Each character's Power card lists that character's ability. Whenever you have the Flames of Power, you get to use the ability on your character's Power card.

  • Cruella: Whenever you pass or land on the same space as another player, steal 1 coin from them.
  • Jafar: Whenever you land on the same space as another player, steal 5 coins from them.
  • Scar: Whenever another player rolls a 6, steal 1 coin from them.
  • Maleficent: Whenever a player lands on a Chance space, steal 1 coin from any player.
  • Evil Queen: Whenever a player lands on a Poison Apple space, steal 1 coin from any player.
  • Hook: At any time, if you don't like your roll, you may reroll. You must then use your second roll.

Buildings

Building Thickets

As soon as you get a color set, you can start buying Thickets (you don't have to wait for your turn).

Pay the Bank the cost on the contract card, and place a Thicket on that contract. You must build evenly. You cannot build a second Thicket on a contract until you've built one on each contract in the set. You can only have 4 Thickets on a contract.

Building Lairs

Once you have 4 Thickets on all contracts in a color set, you can pay to upgrade to a Lair. Pay the Lair cost on the contract card, return all 4 Thickets to the Bank, and put a Lair on the contract.

You can only have 1 Lair per contract. You can't add any more Thickets.

Not enough buildings?

If multiple players want to buy the last Thicket or Lair, the Banker must auction it. Bids start at 1 coin and anyone can increase the bid by as little as 1 coin. You don't need to follow turn order. Payment goes to the Bank.

No buildings left?

You can't buy any until someone sells theirs back.

Deals & Trades

You can buy, sell, or swap property with other players at any time.

You must sell all buildings on a color set to the Bank before you can give a contract back to the Bank or trade a contract to another player. You cannot sell or trade buildings to another player.

Property can be traded for coins, other property, and/or Poison Apple and Get Out of Jail Free cards. The amount is decided by the players making the deal.

Help! I Can't Pay!

1. Try to raise money.

If you owe money and can't pay, try to raise money by selling buildings back to the Bank.

Selling Buildings

Sell Lairs to the Bank for half the cost, rounding up if needed, and exchange them immediately for 4 Thickets.

Sell Thickets to the Bank for half the cost, rounding up if needed. Thickets must be sold evenly across the color set.

Still owe money?

If you still owe a player money and don't have any Thickets or Lairs to sell, you must give one of your properties to that player to settle your debt.

If you still owe the Bank, return one property to the Bank to settle your debt.

2. If you don't have any properties left, you are bankrupt and out of the game!

Do you owe another player? Give them any Poison Apple and/or Get Out of Jail Free cards.

Do you owe the Bank? Return any Poison Apple and/or Get Out of Jail Free cards to the bottom of the appropriate deck.

The End of the Game

The remaining players keep playing until there is only one person left in the game. That player is the winner!
