Object of the Game
The first player to skillfully roll the balls and fill the hollows in the forest floor with his three forest floor chips wins the game.
Contents
- 16 small dung balls in 4 colors
- 1 large hedgehog ball
- 4 dung depots
- 1 circular forest floor with 22 hollows
- 12 colored forest floor chips with 4 ramps
Set-up
Before the first game, carefully punch the forest floor chips out of the forest floor. Sort them according to the colors on their back. You don't need the forest floor chips with the brown backs, but you can keep them as reserve chips.
Each player chooses a ramp and takes three forest floor chips, 1 dung depot and 3 dung balls in the same color. Put the dung balls into your dung depot in front of you.
Important: In the two-player game, each player gets 4 dung balls instead of 3.
If you can, play on a table with a smooth surface or on a plain floor. Place the forest floor in the middle of the table or on the floor, easily accessible to everybody, and place all your ramps equally distant from it (approximately 2 ramp-lengths away). Put the hedgehog ball within reach so that it is not in the way between the ramps and the forest floor.
The one who can best roll himself into a ball begins the game.
This is How You Set Up the Ramps
- Erect the back wall.
- Fold the side parts and flaps along the folds and shove each flap into its corresponding slot - done!
How the Game Plays
One after another, in clockwise order, let one dung ball roll from any spot on your ramp onto the forest floor and try to end up in the hollows of the forest floor. If your dung ball comes to rest outside the forest floor, you put it back into your dung depot. In either case, it is now the next player's turn.
If you succeed in getting all your dung balls into the hollows of the forest floor, you take your dung balls back into your dung depot. Then you turn one of your forest floor chips to its forest floor side, and use it to close any one empty hollow in the forest floor.
The Special Functions of the Forest Floor Chips
When you close a hollow in the forest floor, you may use any one of your three forest floor chips. Each of these chips allows you an additional action that you carry out immediately:
- roll another one of your own dung balls
- roll the hedgehog ball
- give any of the dung balls lying on the forest floor back to its owner
If one of your dung balls is lying on the forest floor but not in a hollow yet, it doesn't count. That means that you may not close any hollow in the forest floor with a forest floor chip even if the other dung balls are already lying in hollows of the forest floor. In this case, on your next turn, your dung ball that is not yet lying in a hollow is taken off the forest floor and you roll it in the usual way from the ramp. Or you try to knock this dung ball into the hollow with the help of the hedgehog ball.
Important: The ramps are steep, so that the balls have a lot of momentum, especially in the beginning; so it makes sense to let your dung ball start more toward the bottom of your ramp so that it doesn't overshoot its goal. The animal symbols on the ramps indicate from where the dung balls roll into the valley more forcefully (hedgehog), not quite that fast (beetle) or more slowly (snail).
The Hedgehog Ball
When at least one of your own dung balls is lying in a hollow on the forest floor and you have another turn, you may choose whether you want to roll another one of your own dung balls or the hedgehog ball.
If you choose the hedgehog ball, you can't roll one of your own dung balls from your ramp in this round. Instead, you have the chance to push other players' dung balls off the forest floor.
To do this, it's best if you start the hedgehog ball right from the top of your ramp and aim at the other players' dung balls. All dung balls that are pushed off the forest floor by the hedgehog ball are put into the dung depots of their owners. (If one of your own dung balls is among them, you have to take it back into your own dung depot as well.) After that, put the hedgehog ball back on the table within reach.
Important: You may roll the hedgehog ball only if at least one of your own dung balls is lying in a hollow on the forest floor!
Dung Balls against Dung Balls
If there are already a lot of dung balls lying on the forest floor, it might make sense to let your own dung balls start from further up on your ramp. This way, you increase your chance of pushing other players' dung balls that are already lying in hollows there off the forest floor. These dung balls return to their owners' dung depot, too. If you are lucky, other players' dung balls slow down your own dung ball so that it comes to rest in a hollow of the forest floor. Of course, you can also try to use one of your own dung balls to push any of your other dung balls (lying on the forest floor but not in a hollow) into one of the hollows.
If your last dung ball lying on the forest floor but not yet in a hollow is pushed by another player's dung ball so that it falls into a hollow, you immediately take all your dung balls back into your dung depot and close one hollow in the forest floor with one of your forest floor chips. If this was your last forest floor chip, you win the game immediately.
Important: You are allowed to move your ramp in order to aim better, but you may not move it closer to the forest floor.
End of the Game
The first player to use his 3 forest floor chips to close hollows in the forest floor wins. To accomplish this, you have to roll all your dung balls into hollows in the forest floor three times and thus close one hollow each time.
Warning! Choking hazard. Not suitable for children under age of 3 due to small parts.
