How does Chain Lightning chain, and can it pass through the Boss?

The first target is directly or diagonally in front; each further target must be diagonal to the previous one (4 targets total at power 2, 6 at power 3). A designer confirmed the chain goes target to target, not space to space, which lets it pass through the Boss; whether an active Rune Shield changes this was left open. It cannot start diagonal chaining without a first target.
