Goal of the Game
One player is the mouse player. With the mice, he tries to nibble away the colour roots underground and to protect his three mice from the goats. The other players are the goat players. Together they try to catch the three mice and to save as many colour roots from them as possible.
The goat players win if they catch the 3 mice before the mice have eaten everything, or if they manage to collect 9 colour roots.
The mouse player wins if no colour root is left in the soil and at least 1 mouse is still in the bed.
How to Play
Choosing Roles
Who wants to be the mouse player in this round? This player may sit at the open side of the root garden. He plays underground.
The other players sit on the other side of the root garden. They play above ground and cannot see what happens underground.
Now the mouse player hangs the colour roots and the three mice from below onto the root tufts. The magnets make them stick.
Rolling the Die
Only the goat players roll the die. They play together. The smallest player begins and rolls. After that, play continues around the group. The colour on the die shows what happens:
- Blue: You may harvest a blue root or catch the blue mouse.
- Pink: You may harvest a pink root or catch the pink mouse.
- Yellow: You may harvest a yellow root or catch the yellow mouse.
- Clover: You may harvest any root or catch any mouse.
Example: If the die shows blue, you carefully try to pull a blue root out of the soil from above. If it really is a blue root, you may keep it with its root tuft. A pink or yellow root you put back. Did you catch the blue mouse? Then you may keep it, and your group has caught the first mouse. If another mouse is hanging on the root tuft, put it back into the bed. Remember well where they are hiding! Then the next player takes his turn.
If the die shows a mouse, the mouse player takes his turn. The goat player who rolled may unfortunately not harvest this time.
The mouse player secretly takes any colour root and places it in front of himself. To do so, he gently pulls a root from below until the magnetic connection releases.
Important: Before this, the mouse player may still bluff a little and sow confusion. He may carefully touch a few roots with his fingers. Above ground, one can then see that something moves here and there, but where is the mouse really nibbling? The empty root tuft stays in its planting hole.
Attention: The mouse player must not remove a mouse! Mice may only be caught by the goat players. If the mouse player removes a mouse, he helps the goat players to win!
The Last Mouse in the Game
As soon as only one mouse is left in the game, the mouse player may move that mouse. He may do this whenever he harvests a colour root. He places the mouse on the spot that has just become free, and of course he may again bluff a little.
Covering Planting Holes
Open planting holes are carefully filled in again. To do this, the mouse player places a soil tile over the open hole.
The next goat player then takes his turn and rolls the die. If he pulls only an empty root tuft while harvesting, he is out of luck. He puts it back and passes the die on.
Important: It helps the goat players to remember which root tufts have nothing hanging on them any more. And they should memorise the positions of the colour roots and mice if these were not removed immediately during a turn.
End of the Game
The mouse player wins if there are no colour roots left in the root garden. In this case he turns the empty root garden over so that all players can look inside.
The goat players win if they have caught all three mice, or if they have collected 9 colour roots (even if no colour roots are then left in the root garden).
In the next round, another player may take on the role of the mouse player.
