Setup
Shuffle the mice and place the cards in a face-down stack in the middle of the table.
Shuffle the clothing items and place the cards in a face-down stack in the middle of the table. Each player receives seven cards and takes them into hand.
Place the cheeses in a face-down stack next to the cards and turn over the top cheese so that everyone can see it clearly.
Gameplay
The player with the cleanest paws turns over the top mouse of the stack so that everyone can see it. Then all players try to catch this mouse at the same time. This can be done in two ways:
1. With a clothing item the mouse wears
If you have a clothing item (of the same colour) that the mouse wears in your hand, place that card on the mouse as quickly as possible. The player who does this first catches the mouse and places it in front of them. This mouse is worth 1 point at the end of the game.
The clothing item goes to the discard pile, and the player takes a new clothing item from the stack, so that they again have seven cards in hand.
2. With a new collection
If you have no clothing item (of the same colour) that the mouse wears in your hand, place all your cards on the mouse as quickly as possible and call "Muisgeflipt!" (the call is kept as printed in the Dutch leaflet). The player who does this first catches the mouse and places it in front of them. This mouse is worth 1 point at the end of the game.
The clothing items are then taken back into hand.
Warning! If the player who first placed a card on the mouse placed a card with a clothing item that the mouse does not wear on the mouse, then they do not catch the mouse! The mouse goes underneath the stack of mice.
The clothing item must be placed face up in front of that player. This card costs the player 1 penalty point at the end of the game. Then the player takes a new clothing item from the stack.
Warning! If the player who placed all their cards on the mouse nevertheless has one or more clothing items (of the same colour) that the mouse wears, then they do not catch the mouse! The mouse goes underneath the stack of mice.
All clothing items (of the same colour) that the mouse does wear must be placed in front of that player. Place one of these cards face down. Any other such cards are placed face up in front of the player. Each clothing item that lies in front of the player at the end of the game gives 1 penalty point. Then the player fills their hand up to seven cards again.
Important! If a player has three face-down cards in front of them, they may no longer call "Muisgeflipt!" to catch a mouse in this way.
After the player who first placed their card(s) on the mouse has filled their hand up to seven cards, they turn over a new mouse, and all players try to catch this mouse.
Note: A mouse can in principle be caught by only one player, regardless of how it happens. Usually it is clear which player was the fastest, because that player places their card(s) and hand on the mouse. If it is not clear, then all the players concerned receive a mouse (take the open mouse first, and then mice from the stack).
Cheese Protects the Mouse
If the cheese lying next to the stack is the same as the cheese shown with the mouse, then the mouse is protected. A protected mouse may never be caught.
A player who nevertheless tries to catch a protected mouse does not catch the mouse. The mouse goes underneath the stack of mice, and the player places the cheese in front of them instead. Each cheese gives 2 penalty points at the end of the game.
Note: Even when the player would not have caught the mouse (because they played a wrong clothing item or wrongly called "Muisgeflipt!"), they still get the cheese. The clothing items also then lie in front of the player as penalty points, as described above.
If nobody tries to catch the mouse because it is protected, the mouse goes underneath the stack of mice. The player who turned over this mouse turns over a new mouse.
End of the Game
The game ends when the last mouse is caught or the last cheese is taken.
Players determine their score:
- each caught mouse: +1 point
- each clothing item on the table (open or face down): -1 point
- each cheese: -2 points
Example (as printed): caught mice +10 points; clothing items -3 points; cheeses -2 points. Final score: 5 points.
The player with the most points wins the game. In case of a tie, the tied player with the fewest penalty points wins.
Variant for Young Players
For young players it is difficult to keep the cards in hand. Therefore, play with the following variant:
Young players receive 4 cards and place these face up in front of them. If a mouse is turned over, they must still place the clothing item (of the same colour) that the mouse wears on the mouse. If they have no clothing item that the mouse wears, they place their hand on the mouse and call "Muisgeflipt!"
The other rules remain the same. Place the penalty points on a separate pile next to the "hand cards", so that these remain clearly separated!
