Contents
1 Mouse van Klecks, 1 Pablo the dog, 1 Vincent the tiger, 1 Niki the hen, 1 Frieda the rabbit, 5 artist's palettes, 5 screens, 4 paintbrushes, 3 pencils, 15 small cakes, 50 dabs of paint color (10 different colors), 1 die, 5 small bags for storing the game pieces, 1 set of game instructions
Preparation
Each player takes a figure with matching screen, an artist's palette and ten dabs of paint color (one of each color). Place the screen in front of you and hide the artist's palette and dabs of paint behind it so the other players can't see them.
Arrange the paintbrushes and pencils in any order and slightly spaced out in a circle in the center of the table. The spaces between them are the playing spaces for the figures. Pick a space and place all of the small cake slices on it. Place all figures on the same space. Return any extra game pieces to the game box.
Have the die ready.
How to Play
The game is played over several rounds in a clockwise direction. The player who last painted a picture gets to play first and rolls the die.
On the die appear six different symbols, each representing a particular category. You will have to come up with a subject to paint based on the symbol appearing on the die when you roll, for instance:
- An animal: something that appears in a fairy tale, movie or story.
- An object: something you want or you can dream about.
- Something you can eat: something that starts with the letter of a word that the player to your left determines.
Tip: To make it easier for younger players they could select something for this symbol that can be found in their preschool, kindergarten or school.
Tell your fellow players loudly and clearly what subject you have chosen to paint. Now everyone has to figure out what three colors they would use to paint the subject on the canvas. Secretly look for three relevant dabs of color behind your screen and place them on the palette. Raise your screens simultaneously only after everyone has finished picking their colors.
Scoring
Compare the colors on your palettes, starting with the player who started the round: Does at least one player have one or more of the same color on his palette as you do?
- Yes? Great! You may move your figure ahead one space for each dab of color that appears on at least one other palette. You can move ahead up to three spaces per round. Warning: If your figure lands on or passes a space with the small tart on it, you are rewarded with a small tart. Place it in front of your screen for all to see.
- No? Too bad! You cannot move your figure.
Example: Thilo rolled the die, which displayed the category symbol of "something that you can eat". He named the art subject "strawberry pie". Three players chose the following dabs of color (shown in the manual's illustration: Thilo, Hanna and Leo).
The scores are calculated as follows: Thilo gets to move his figure forward one space (for red), Hanna gets to move ahead two spaces (for red and brown) and Leo also gets to move ahead two spaces (for red and brown).
New Round
Next, everyone removes the dabs of color from their palettes and sets up their screens again. It is the next player's turn to roll the die, starting a new round.
End of the Game
The game is over as soon as a player collects his third small tart, thus winning the game. If more than one player receives a small tart during the same round, these players both win the game.
Collaborative Version for 2 Players
Mouse van Klecks challenges you to a duel: Can you work together to collect two of the small cake slices before Mouse van Klecks does?
Follow the basic rules, but with the following changes:
- At the beginning of the game, place only three small cakes on the starting space instead of all of them. In addition, place Mouse van Klecks on the space as well as another figure that you will have to choose together.
- Each of you needs to pick any screen you want to hide your own palette and dab of colors.
- The person who rolls the die comes up with a word from the matching category. Without any discussion between you, each of you will then select three appropriate dabs of color and place them on your palettes.
- Scoring: For each pair of colors that don't match, Mouse van Klecks moves ahead one space; for each pair of matching dabs of color, your figure moves ahead one space. The important thing here is that Mouse van Klecks always gets to move first.
Example: (shown in the manual's illustration) The players' figure gets to move ahead one space, and Mouse van Klecks gets to move ahead two spaces.
- If a figure lands on or passes the space with the small cake on it, the player is rewarded with a slice of cake.
- The game ends as soon as Mouse van Klecks or your figure collects the second small slice of cake, thus winning the game.
