Goal of the Game

Score more points than your opponents by guessing, and by making others guess, words.

Components

  • 110 Word cards
  • 10 Bad Luck cards
  • 1 Curse tile
  • the rules

Setup

  • Stack about half of the Word cards in the middle of the table.
  • Put the Curse tile and the Bad Luck cards to one side.
  • Shuffle the other Word cards and stack them in the left-hand part of the box, numbers facing up.
  • The player who most recently had a premonitory dream takes the box and plays first.

The Game

Sequence of a Round

  1. The player holding the box turns over the top card and places it in the right-hand part of the box (out of sight of the other players).

  2. They look at the 2 cards inside the box and choose which secret word they want to make the group guess, between the 2 possibilities: the left-hand card shows them 2 symbols, which correspond to 2 words on the right-hand card, and a precise number of clues for each one.

Example: they have a choice between the Sun symbol 4 and the Feather symbol 2, meaning either making the word "Fish" guessed in 4 clues, or the word "Ball" guessed in 2 clues.

  3. They give their clues one at a time (only a single word each time, linked to the secret word) and try to make the group guess their secret word with the exact number of clues indicated on the card.

    At each clue given:

    • the opponents may each propose one answer, in any order
    • 3 answers maximum (in games with 5 and 6 players) before the next clue

Example with 3 players: Irma tries to make the secret word "Fish" guessed in 4 clues. 1st clue: "Astrology". Annabelle proposes "Sign" and Félix proposes "Horoscope". 2nd clue: "Moon". Félix proposes "Planet" and Annabelle proposes "Constellation". 3rd clue: "Tail". Félix proposes "Fish", the round stops immediately and he alone wins 3 points. Irma wins nothing.

End of a Round

  • If the secret word is guessed exactly with the indicated number of clues: the player who guessed and the player who gave the clues each win as many points as the number of clues.
  • If the secret word is guessed before that: only the player who guessed wins as many points as the number of clues given.
  • If the secret word is not guessed: no one wins any points.

NB: if 2 players say the correct answer at the same time, they both win the points.

To count points, deal out the Word cards stacked in the middle of the table (one card is worth 1 point).

New Round

The box passes to the next player and they play as explained above.

The Clues

Each clue is a word that must individually have a link with the meaning of the secret word. A compound word or a proper noun counts as one word.

Forbidden

  • words from the same family as the secret word, or from the same family as an earlier clue
  • translations
  • spelling out your clue

Bonus Effects

On the back of the Word cards, you can find 2 types of bonus effects.

  • If the player has to make a secret word guessed in 1 clue and succeeds, they keep the box and play another round (with a new card).
  • When a player has made a word with this effect guessed (with the exact number of clues, or before), after the points are handed out, they take a Bad Luck card from the pile and place it in front of an opponent. This will remove one point from that opponent at the end of the game.

At any time: if a majority of the players find that a player is thinking for too long about what they are going to say while they hold the box, that player may receive a Bad Luck card from the pile (-1 point at the end of the game). But watch out for the backlash, and don't forget that good clues need a minimum of thought!

Examples of grounds: they are thinking for too long, they are peeking into the box, they always want to give the Curse tile to a particular player, they make bad coffee...

Curse Tile

If a majority of the players find that a clue given has no link with the secret word, the player who gave the clue puts the Curse tile in front of themselves, even if it was in front of another player. At the end of the game, this tile makes the player who has it in front of them lose 4 points. Careful: if a player has to take this tile while they already have it, they immediately give back all their points (but keep any Bad Luck cards they have).

Example: Saying "White" as a clue for "Dog" is not correct, because not all dogs are white.

End of the Game

When the box has gone around the table 2 times, whoever has accumulated the most points wins the game!
