Object of the Game

  • The object of the game is to buy, rent out, or sell properties so profitably that you become the richest player and thereby the game's only matador.
  • You begin at "START" and move your piece clockwise according to the dice. When your piece lands on a space that is not already owned by another player, you may buy it from the bank and collect rent from your opponents when they land on that space. If you do not wish to buy the property, the bank puts it up for auction immediately.
  • The rent increases considerably when houses and hotels are built.
  • To raise more money, you can mortgage properties to the bank.
  • The "Try your luck" (Prøv lykken) spaces entitle you to draw a card, whose instructions you must then follow.
  • Sometimes a player ends up in jail.
  • The game is full of speculation and excitement, and the auctioneer can often add to this.

Setup

One of the players is chosen to be the banker (bankøren). The banker gives each player 30,000 kr., distributed as follows:

  • 2 × 5,000 kr.
  • 5 × 2,000 kr.
  • 7 × 1,000 kr.
  • 5 × 500 kr.
  • 4 × 100 kr.
  • 2 × 50 kr.

The bank keeps the rest of the money, the title deeds, the green houses, and the red hotels. All payments into and out of the bank go through the bank, with the exception of rent, which is paid to the owner, and trade in title deeds and jail release cards, which takes place directly between the players.

Place the "Try your luck" cards in a pile in the middle of the board, face down.

Playing the Game

Each player places their car on the "START" space, and the players agree on who begins. Play then continues clockwise.

The first player throws both dice and moves their car forward as many spaces as the dice show. When the player has exercised the right or fulfilled the duty indicated by the space, the turn passes to the next player. Each time a player passes "START," they receive 4,000 kr. from the bank.

If you land on a "Try your luck" space, take the top card from the "Try your luck" pile and follow its wording. When a card has been used, put it back at the bottom of the pile.

If you land on an unowned property or company, either after a dice throw or by the instruction of a "Try your luck" card, you may buy it from the bank for the price shown on the space. You then receive the title deed, which you place face up in front of you. According to the rent scale printed on the deed, you may now collect rent from players who land on your property. If you do not buy the deed, the bank puts it up for auction immediately, and every player is allowed to take part in the auction.

If you land on the space "Go to jail" (De fængsles), you must go directly to jail and do not receive the 4,000 kr. for passing "START." If you land on the space "In jail" (I fængsel), you are merely visiting and continue next time without penalty.

You may pay income tax with 4,000 kr. Alternatively, you may pay 10% of your assets: cash, buildings, and the printed price of properties and companies (including those that are mortgaged). The player must choose the method of payment before adding up their assets.

If you throw two of a kind (for example, two fives), you get an extra throw. You must follow the instructions for the space you land on after the first throw and also those for the space you land on after the extra throw. If you throw two of a kind three times in a row, you may not move on the third throw and must go directly to jail.

The "Parking" (Parkering) space is a safe haven until you throw again.

Jail

You get out of jail in one of the following ways:

  1. By paying a fine of 1,000 kr. before you throw the dice.
  2. By using one of the jail release cards from the "Try your luck" pile.
  3. By throwing two of a kind. You then immediately move forward the number of spaces shown by the dice, and you still get an extra throw.

You may not stay in jail for more than three turns. If you do not throw two of a kind on your third throw, you must pay the fine of 1,000 kr. and move as the dice show.

While you are in jail, you still have the right to buy properties (at auction or through trade with the other players), but you may not collect rent from the other players.

Houses and Hotels

If you own all the properties of the same colour, you receive double rent on the unbuilt properties in that group, and you have the right to build houses at any time. Houses are bought from the bank at the price shown on the title deeds.

Building must be even. You may build the first house on any property in the group you wish, but before a second house is built on a property, one house must have been built on each of the other properties in the group, and so on.

Before you build a hotel, there must be four houses on each property in the group. Only one hotel may be built on each property. When you buy a hotel, you return the four houses to the bank.

The bank must, whenever you wish, take buildings back at half price.

The price of a hotel is five times the price of a house.

If the bank has no buildings when you wish to buy, you must wait until some are returned. If several players wish to buy and the bank does not have enough for everyone, the bank puts the available houses up for auction.

Trade in unbuilt properties etc. between players is permitted at whatever price the players can agree upon.

Note: If you have built on a property, you must sell the buildings back to the bank before you can dispose of any property in that group.

Mortgaging

  • You may only mortgage your unbuilt properties etc. to the bank, for the amount printed on the title deeds. If you have buildings on the properties, you must first sell these to the bank. The player keeps the title deeds, but turns them face down.
  • The interest is 10% (rounded up to the nearest 100 kr.), and the interest is paid together with the loan when the mortgage is lifted.
  • If a mortgaged property is sold and the buyer does not lift the mortgage immediately, the buyer must still pay the 10% if they later lift the mortgage.
  • No rent may be collected on mortgaged property.
  • The bank only lends against mortgage security.
  • Mortgaging properties and trading in buildings take place only through the bank.
  • Players may not lend money to each other.

If you forget to collect rent from a fellow player, you lose your right to do so once player number 2 after that person has thrown the dice.

Bankruptcy. If a player owes more than they own, they must hand everything over to their creditor, after first selling any buildings back to the bank, and must then leave the game.

If the bank is the creditor, the banker immediately auctions the properties received.

Quick Game

The banker shuffles the title deed cards and gives each player two deeds, for which the player receives the printed price.

Set a playing time. When the time is up, the player with the greatest fortune wins.
