Components

  • 6 character cards (with their own particular objectives/missions)
  • 62 skill cards
  • 6 gold coins
  • 12 silver coins
  • 2 objective map cards
  • 1 punch token

Game Setup

  1. Take character cards according to the number of players and the following rule:

    • 3 Players: Mat Goceng, Nyi Kencleng, Rijkaard Cere
    • 4 Players: the 3 cards above plus Wan Fulus
    • 5 Players: the 4 cards above plus Bang Codet
    • 6 Players: all 6 character cards (the 5 cards above plus Baba Amsyong)

Source note: the printed setup diagram shows the character-card selection as bracketed rows of cards (3, 4, 5 and 6 players) rather than as a list; the list above is read from those brackets.

Shuffle the cards and distribute them face down to each player. Each player can take a look at his/her own character card and then put it face down with the 3 coffee cups as the front side.

  2. Separate "Ajian Mata Menembus Sukma" skill cards. The number of this card used in the game (in the skill card deck) is adjusted according to the number of players and the following rule:

    • For 3 players: "Ajian Mata Menembus Sukma" cards are not used in the game.
    • For 4-5 players: 1 "Ajian Mata Menembus Sukma" card is used in the game.
    • For 6 players: 2 "Ajian Mata Menembus Sukma" cards are used in the game.
  3. Shuffle the skill cards deck, and then distribute 5 cards to each player's hand.

  4. Put the remaining skill cards deck, face down, at the middle of the table.

  5. Distribute 1 gold coin and 2 silver coins to each player. Be informed that 1 gold coin has the same value as 3 silver coins.

The setup diagram shows the character card's side with 3 cups of coffee positioned as the front side.

Rules of Play

The game is played in turn, each turn has two phases:

  1. Challenge Phase

On his/her turn, an active player must challenge another player into a battle. The challenged player may then decide to reconcile by paying 2 silver coins to the challenger (active player). If the challenged player chooses to reconcile, the active player must then challenge another player.

If the challenged player accepts the challenge, both players (active player and the challenged player) then proceed to the battle phase.

If all the challenged players decide to reconcile, the active player can take skill cards from the deck until he/she has 5 skill cards on his/her hand. His/her turn is then over, and the game continues to the next player in clockwise direction.

  2. Battle Phase

In battle phase, both players (active and challenged) play their skill cards in order to defeat the opponent. The battle is begun by the active player, playing one of his/her skill cards by putting it on the table, and then giving the punch token to the opponent (punch token is used as the players' turn signifier).

The challenged player must then respond by playing his/her own skill card, giving back the punch token signifying the opponent's turn to respond.

Players can then play their skill cards in turn by connecting the bottom fist color of the previous card to the top fist color of their next card.

If a player can't connect his/her skill cards, he/she may ask any other player who is not engaged in the battle to help them with "Extra Power".

The battle ends when a player can no longer connect his/her skill cards line color (with or without "Extra Power") when it is his/her turn to respond (while in possession of punch token).

The lost player's stamina is then reduced by 1, turning the faced down character card by 90 degrees counter clockwise. Both players (active and challenged player) then get the chance to replenish their hands by taking skill cards from the deck until they have 5 cards.

Diagram: the lost player's stamina is then reduced by 1.

IMPORTANT! When a player reaches 1 stamina remaining (1 coffee cup), he/she must reveal his/her character card.

Extra Power

In Mat Goceng, it is important to have good negotiation skill to persuade other players in helping you getting through the battle phase. Players who are engaged in battle may ask any other players (except the opponent) to help them continue the battle, by connecting the skill cards line color. Player whose assistance is requested may ask for any number of coins payment.

At the end of battle, however, the assisting player/the helper does not receive any additional cards from the deck and must proceed the game with the remaining cards on hand up to his/her own turn.

End Game

The game ends when a player loses all of his/her stamina. All players succeeded in completing the missions (as stated in their characters cards) and surviving until the end of the game, are declared winners.

Skill Card

  • Special Fist Symbol: The fist symbol of this card can be connected with fist symbol of any color.
  • Ajian Mata Menembus Sukma: Player who plays this card has the ability to see another player's character card. Pay attention: If a player uses this card as an assistance for Extra Power, he/she is the one who receives/gets the card's effect, not the battling/fighting players.
  • Ajian Tapak Bayangan: Battling opponent must discard the most recent skill cards on his/her line color. That player then must connect 2 skill cards (1 as a replacement for the discarded card, and another one as a responding card for his/her turn), so that he can return the punch token.
  • Ajian Thi Tjhi Ie: Player who plays this card can take an additional one card from the skill cards deck. Pay attention: If a player uses this card as an assistance for Extra Power, he/she is the one who receives/gets the card's effect, not the battling/fighting players.
  • Kasbon: Player who plays this card can take one random card from another player's hand who isn't engaged in battle. Pay attention: If a player uses this card as an assistance for Extra Power, he/she is the one who receives/gets the card's effect, not the battling/fighting players.
