Object of the Game
This is a cooperative game in which Virtual Reality (VR) is used. By wearing the Moai shaped VR goggles, a view of the interior of the temple will be shown. Explain the scenery you have seen to your team members and create a map of the temple. Lurking inside the temple there are three strange creatures named Rapa Rapas. The person who finds a Rapa Rapa must try to remember its appearance and create its shape with clay. The clay Rapa Rapas will be moved on the map when the answer is checked. The game is won if the map is correct and the Rapa Rapas are gathered in one place to be rescued.
Structure of the Temple
The stage of the game is the temple that sank into the sea. It is composed of two areas: an underwater area into which the ruin is completely submerged, and an area partly above the water level where some air is still left. You can look inside the temple for a limited period of time by wearing the Mask. Switch between the two areas and inform the team members about your observations.
How to Switch Underwater / Above Water: Areas will switch if you jump lightly while wearing the Mask.
Features of Underwater:
- There are hexagon shaped rooms, the walls of which are decorated with a relief of faces.
- There are six types of relief of the faces. The faces are arranged according to rules that will be described later.
- There are rooms where all six faces are blocked by a wall, and there are rooms where some faces are connected to a passage to the next room.
Features of Above Water:
- Same as the underwater area, there are hexagon shaped rooms surrounded by walls.
- There are some passages that lead to another room.
- There are three types of passages: a straight passage, a bending passage, and a dead-end.
- Rapa Rapas are said to be lurking in passages.
- There never is any underwater area below a passage.
Map Items
Used to make the map. There are Tiles, Pieces, Markers and Others. There are several types of each.
Tiles
- Submerged Tiles: Use them to show the submerged area. Decorative pictures may be on the tiles. They don't affect the game play.
- Land Tile: Place it when you found a passage above the water. (There are three types: a straight passage, a bending passage, and a dead-end.)
Pieces
- Wall Piece: This represents the relief of the wall. Put it into a corresponding edge of the tile.
- Connection Piece: This represents a part without a wall in the water. Use it instead of the Wall Piece.
Markers
- View Marker: This shows the number of the scene in the temple. Place it on a Tile.
- Emergency Time Marker: Use it in ultimate attempts instead of the regular View Marker.
- Rapa Rapa Markers: They mark the positions where Rapa Rapas are found every time. Put them on the Tiles where Rapa Rapas are.
- Rapa Rapa Face Marker: Shows the facing direction of the Rapa Rapa. Determine the facing direction of the Rapa Rapa in VR and then paste the face marker on the Rapa Rapa made of clay.
Others
- Clay: The player who found a Rapa Rapa can use it to recreate the appearance of them.
- Mask of Moai: Used to look into the temple.
Rules of the Stage
The temple is structured following certain rules. During the game these rules can be consulted on the Rule Card. By using these rules the structure of the temple can be derived, without actually seeing it. (Both Submerged and Land tile: 1 hexagonal tile will be counted as one room from below.)
-
There are 6 types of relief. All the reliefs within the same room are different from each other.
-
Relief which is placed at the front and at the back side of a wall has the same facial expression on both sides. The relief on the other side of the wall's relief you look at is the same.
-
Land Tiles can be next to each other, however the passages will never join each other. Land passages never connect to each other. The tile at the end of a passage will always be a submerged tile.
-
All tiles will be connected by passages to form a complete map. There are no rooms separated from the map. All the rooms are connected to each other.
-
All reliefs connected to the same Land Tile have the same face. The sides of the rooms that are connected to the same Land Tile all have the same relief. If you know the relief's color that is connected with a Land Tile, you know all of the relief next to the same Land Tile.
Game Preparation 1
Preparing the App: Please download the app from below (free download).
- Apple app: http://app.gift10.net/monyai/ios/
- Android app: http://app.gift10.net/monyai/android/
Assembling of Land Tiles: Assemble according to the picture in the rulebook. You can keep them in the box once they are assembled.
How to Use Wall Pieces and Connection Pieces: A Wall Piece that shows the relief and a Connection Piece that shows the connection to the passage to the next room will be used according to the picture in the rulebook.
How to Place Items on the Table: Place the Map Tiles, Wall Pieces, Connection Pieces and Clay Markers on the table, creating a circle as shown in the figure. Keep the types of items well separated from each other. The map can be created in the inner side of the circle. Make sure there is enough space.
How to Take Care of the Clay: It will soften if you mix a few drops of water and wait for a while.
Setup layout (from the rulebook figure): Clay ×1; Wall Pieces ×10 (several groups); Land Tiles ×10; Submerged Tiles ×10; Connection Pieces ×10; Emergency Time Markers ×6; View Markers ×6; Rapa Rapa Marker ×1; Rapa Rapa Face Markers ×5. Make MAPs on the center of the table.
Note: the setup figure lists 6 Emergency Time Markers and 5 Rapa Rapa Face Markers, while the component list above shows 3 Emergency Time Markers and 6 Rapa Rapa Face Markers. Both are printed as-is in the source; the component list is the one shown on the rulebook's contents page.
Game Preparation 2
-
Start the app. Launch the app to the setup screen. Here you can adjust the degree of difficulty. In your first challenge, we recommend you choose a "practice" mode.
-
Set the level of difficulty. Follow the instructions from the app and choose the difficulty of the game.
-
Give each player a Rule Card. Use it to check the rules for placement of the reliefs.
-
The Hint Card. The number of all shapes of Land Tiles required in the stage are shown in the app. Put the corresponding Hint Card clearly visible for all players on the table. The other Hint Cards will not be used during this game.
How to use the Hint Card: For example, if there are two bending passages on the maps, even if it is said to be only one bending passage in the Hint Card, there is something wrong. Example: The two bending passages are the same Land Tile, or one of the maps is wrong. Place it clearly visible for all players.
-
Challenge Cards. Expansion rules for people who have become accustomed to the game. (If you do not want to use this item, please skip.) By using the Challenge Cards you can change the way of communication in the game.
How to Use the Challenge Cards: Shuffle the cards well and put the card deck face down on the table. Then turn over three cards and place them near the deck. The player with the mask takes one of the face up cards. Choose one before looking into the temple. When the player is looking into the temple the other players must follow the instructions on the chosen card. When the player takes off the mask the card is discarded and will be no longer used in the game. When all three cards are used, they are refilled from the deck up to three. Restore if three cards are gone.
How to Play 1
-
Player order. Decide in which order the players will wear the Mask. The player who went to the seaside most recently will go first. If nobody qualifies, the oldest player starts.
Game Flow:
- Perform investigation [Search of the Temple] and combine information [Moai Conference]. Repeat this procedure 6 times.
- Use [Emergency Time] if you want to check what you have missed. This can only be done 3 times max.
- Complete the map during [Moai Last Conference].
- Perform the [Rescue of Rapa Rapas].
-
Search of the Temple. When you wear the Mask, you will enter the UFO. There are six statues with numbers around you. There will be one shining statue. Move your face to place the light in the center of the screen. When light fills the screen, the search of the Temple will start.
Action During Search:
- Looking into the temple: The player wearing the Mask can look into the temple within a certain time limit and inform the other team members about her observations, using words and gestures. The Mask cannot be taken off until the investigation time is over.
- Creating the map: Based on the information from the Masked player, the other team members will recreate what this player saw by using map items on the table.
-
Moai Conference. When the Masked player takes off the Mask, check if there are any mistakes on the map. There is no time limitation. First take off Tiles and Pieces that aren't connected to anything from the created map. If many maps were made during one search, choose one map and break down the others. Then everyone will join the conference. You can exchange all information you want during the conference. Inform the others about whatever you noticed. Once there is a mutual agreement, move the assembled piece of the map aside and end the conference. The next player will wear the Mask. Move the created map to the end of the table. The map can only be changed by "Adding and changing according to the Rule Card" or by "Combining parts of the Map".
How to Play 2
-
Emergency Time. After six searches of the Temple and Moai conferences, you can re-investigate in an Emergency Time what you have missed (up to 3 times). Conduct the search of the Temple and Moai conference as in usual turns.
Changes in Emergency Time:
- How to start looking in: If you wear the Mask, all of the six statues will be shining. Select the statue with the number of the turn (see View Marker) you want to see in the center of the screen. The time limit of looking in will be half of the normal turn.
- Marker: Use the Emergency Time Marker instead of the View Marker.
-
Moai Last Conference. This conference takes place before the Rescue of Rapa Rapas (checking the answer) written below. Combine all the map tiles to complete the map of the entire temple. Basically this procedure is the same as 3. (Moai Conference.)
-
Rescue of Rapa Rapas (checking the answer). Remove the Smartphone from the Mask and check the answer after you've completed the map. Move the Rapa Rapas made of clay following the instructions of the application. If the three Rapa Rapas end their movement in one place the recovery succeeds and the game is cleared!
Movement of Rapa Rapa Rules:
- Underwater: Moves through the walls.
- Land: Moves along the passage drawn on a Land Tile.
Game Hints
- Are there problems in combining parts of the maps? Check the placement of the walls in cooperation with your team members. (Moai Captain)
- If you don't remember the scenery after looking one single time, use the Emergency Time. (Moai Communication Officer)
- The number of Land Tiles is already investigated. You will know where the Tiles connect by checking the Hint Card. (Moai investigation member)
- "The relief of the wall you cannot see may sometimes be known from the Rule Card. Check the map with the Rule Card in Moai Conference." (Rapa Rapa)
Contrast Table
The printed contrast table (Japanese with English alongside) is summarised here in English; the Japanese text is omitted.
Terrain (Land):
- Bending passage
- Straight passage
- Dead End
Illustrations drawn on the tiles do not affect the game. Please treat them like any other submerged tile.
Rapa Rapa / LapaLapa:
The ecology of Rapa Rapa is full of mystery. They all have different forms and they are difficult to study. The above rapalapa is part of the book LaPara. Perhaps there are also 8 or 2 tactile senses and 1 foot. However, it is said that the LapaLapa is the same for the face alone.
