Important Definitions
This expansion can be played in either zombie mode or hero mode. Some special rules and components included can be used in both modes. Therefore, the following rules apply to both modes:
- Heroes controlled by you are called player heroes. In zombie mode, the term player heroes refers to zombie heroes; in hero mode, it refers to superheroes.
- Heroes controlled by the game are called enemy heroes. In zombie mode, the term enemy heroes refers to superheroes; in hero mode, it refers to zombie heroes.
Translator's note: the German term "Nebencharaktere" (side characters) is used for Cosmo and Howard the Duck. The Spanish edition calls these cards "Transeúntes" (bystanders).
Thanos
"My beloved, Lady Death, desires a continuous, unending harvest. A harvest, in perfect balance, as all things should be. That is why I am here."
Thanos, the deadly Titan, is now the dead Titan. Yet his undead brain does not let his fanatical plan rest. The plan: to collect all the Infinity Stones and, with them, shape the universe according to his idea of balance. In truth, his ambition has only been fed further by the zombification!
Thanos can be added to any mission as an enemy. To do so, simply shuffle his superhero card into the superhero deck in zombie mode, or his zombie hero card into the zombie hero deck in hero mode. In both cases, shuffle the Infinity Stone cards into a single deck and place it face down next to the game board.
Treat Thanos like an enemy hero. Like other enemy heroes, Thanos has 2 actions per activation. However, he differs from them in the following rules:
- Thanos comes FIRST in the target priority order, before all other enemy heroes.
- When Thanos spawns, draw a set number of Infinity Stone cards and place them next to his zombie hero / superhero card. Thanos has already collected these stones in the chaos of the zombie apocalypse. The number of cards drawn depends on the current highest danger level:
- Blue level: 1 Infinity Stone
- Yellow level: 2 Infinity Stones
- Orange level: 3 Infinity Stones
- Red level: 4 Infinity Stones
- Thanos has all the abilities of the Infinity Stones he has collected.
- At the start of each enemy phase, draw 1 additional Infinity Stone card, which Thanos collects.
- Once Thanos has collected 6 Infinity Stones, you lose the mission unless you defeat him before the end of the next player phase.
Translator's note: the German says Thanos's extra stone is drawn "zu Beginn jeder Gegnerphase" (at the start of each enemy phase). "Gegnerphase" and "Spielerphase" are the German terms for the enemy and player phases.
Hint for zombie mode: As a zombified tyrant, Thanos knows that the other zombies are the greatest danger to his plans. Therefore he has used his power and influence to win over the superheroes and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Thanos behaves like a superhero. This means that in zombie mode he does not attack superheroes and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (and vice versa), and he also ignores side characters.
Infinity Stone Cards
Thanos's abilities come from the Infinity Stone cards he has collected. The two stone cards whose text is legible on the components page are:
- Raumstein (Space Stone): Thanos moves +1 Zone with each action.
- Zeitstein (Time Stone): At the end of Thanos' activation, roll 1 die. On a 5+, he performs 1 additional action. Roll again after each additional action.
Gap: the text on the other four Infinity Stone cards is printed on the cards themselves and is not legible at usable resolution on the rulebook's components page, so it is not transcribed here. In the source image the left edge of the Zeitstein text is partly covered by the overlapping card; the wording above is the visible text, and the Spanish edition's wording matches it.
