Special Setup

A game with the Team cards follows all the standard rules, with the following modifications:

  • Choose one of the Team decks. Keep its Team Members card aside and shuffle the other cards into a facedown deck within reach of all players.
  • Make sure all the Heroes being used belong to the chosen Team by checking the list on its Team Members card. If players can't find a Team that has all the Heroes they want to use, they can always use the United Heroes Team, which includes everyone!
  • To preserve the game balance, Heroes should remove 1 [green and yellow card icon] [red and yellow card icon] card from their decks.
  • Draw the top 2 cards of the Team deck and place them faceup next to it. This is the Team Display.

Special Rules

  • Turns are resolved in the usual sequence, with players alternating taking Hero turns.

  • Each turn, the Hero may either:

    • Play a regular Hero turn by drawing 1 card from their Hero deck, playing 1 card from their hand, and then performing Actions and using Special Effects as usual.

    OR

    • Play a Team turn by playing a Team card. Choose 1 of the cards shown in the Team Display and play it in the Storyline. The Team card is used as if it were one of that Hero's regular cards. The Hero then performs Actions and uses Special Effects as usual. At the end of the turn, if there are still cards in the Team deck, draw the top card from the deck and place it faceup in the Team Display, so that there are 2 cards there.

Rules Clarifications

  • Negative Cards: Each Team deck includes 1 card with a mandatory negative effect (shown in a black text box) that is active as long as that card is in the Team Display. The only way to get rid of this ongoing negative effect is for a Hero to take a Team turn and select that card, playing it facedown in the Storyline. The Hero can still perform the remainder of their turn, using any Actions on the previous Hero card in the Storyline as usual. Players can choose to remove this card during Setup to decrease the game difficulty.
  • The Heroes do not lose the game if there are no Team cards left.
  • If an effect forces a Hero to play their next Hero card randomly, they cannot take a Team turn. They must play a regular Hero turn and play a random card from their hand.
  • Cards in the Team Display are not considered to be part of the Storyline, thus can't be turned facedown, swapped, or manipulated in any way other than playing them.
  • Once played, Team cards are not considered to belong to any Hero, so they are ignored by effects that, for instance, force a Hero to turn their earliest or latest card in the Storyline facedown, or that affect cards belonging to another Hero (such as Rogue's Absorption). However, they are still considered Hero cards, so Villain effects that affect Hero cards in the Storyline can affect Team cards. For example, they would be turned facedown by effects that don't specify the ownership of a Hero card, such as "turn the latest Hero card in the Storyline facedown". Resolve any ambiguities in favor of the Villain.
  • Team cards in the Storyline can't be swapped with Hero cards in players' hands with effects that allow swapping.
  • Some Team cards have 2 symbols at the bottom, either of which can be chosen when played in the Storyline. The Hero that plays such a card in the Storyline can choose only 1 of the 2 symbols to use during their turn. Then, the following Hero has the same choice, using either the same symbol or the other one. These cards are considered to have only 1 symbol at the bottom for game effects. However, if 1 symbol is canceled (for example, by a Crisis token), the following Hero may still use the other symbol. In case the symbols at the bottom of the Hero cards are relevant for a game effect, for these cards the Hero chooses which of the 2 symbols should be considered.

Example Cards

The booklet shows three example cards: the first page shows a Team deck's card back and the Team Display of the Avengers, and page 3 shows a Secret Avengers card. The card faces in the booklet are small, so their wording below is read from the page image and may differ in minor words from the printed cards.

Avengers, Assemble! (Avengers Team card) Choose 1 Hero. Each other Hero may move 1 Location towards them. Then in that Hero's Location, perform as many [attack icon] or [move icon] as the number of Heroes here.

Government Ties (Avengers Team card, black text box: Negative Card) As long as this card is in the Team Display, Heroes cannot perform the same Action more than once in their turn. When played in the Storyline, turn this card facedown.

Weapons Down or... (Secret Avengers Team card, Team Captain America) If there are no [icon] in your Location: [green move symbol] OR [yellow symbol].

Compatibility

When using Team decks with special modes, follow these rules:

Team vs Team Mode:

  • Each Team must use their own Team deck (though each Team can independently choose whether they want to use a Team deck or not).
  • When a Special Effect on a Team card refers to "Heroes/other Heroes", it only refers to Heroes belonging to that Team.

Player vs Player Modes:

  • Each Team must use their own Team deck (though each Team can independently choose whether they want to use a Team deck or not).

Super Villain Mode:

  • The Heroes do not get the usual starting Action tokens during Setup.

Commander Solo Mode:

  • Team decks cannot be used with this mode.
