Complications Challenge
The Complications Challenge increases the difficulty of the game, adding extra obstacles to the Heroes' progress. It can be used when facing any Villain and is ideally suited to be mixed with the Commander Solo Mode.
Setup
Shuffle all the Complication cards. Then, draw 1, 2, 3, or 4 cards, without looking at them. The number of cards used depends on the extra difficulty desired (the more cards, the harder the game). Insert the cards, facedown, in specific positions inside the shuffled Master Plan deck.
- The 1st Complication card after the 1st Master Plan card
- The 2nd Complication card after the 3rd Master Plan card
- The 3rd Complication card after the 5th Master Plan card
- The 4th Complication card after the 7th Master Plan card
Special Rules
As soon as a Complication card is at the top of the Master Plan deck, take it and place it faceup near the board. The card is not drawn by the Villain. It is revealed the moment it becomes visible on top of the deck.
The Effect written on the Complication card is immediately applied (even before resolving the Master Plan card that was on top of it) and remains active as long as the card is faceup near the board.
A faceup Complication card is discarded as soon as its listed Discard When condition is met.
There is no limit to the number of Complication cards that can be faceup and active at any time. It's possible for all Complication cards to be faceup at the same time if none of them get discarded.
Complication cards are not considered Master Plan cards. So, while in the deck, they cannot be revealed, looked at, removed, or rearranged by Heroes. If a game effect instructs the players to reshuffle the Master Plan deck, first remove the Complication cards before shuffling the Master Plan cards, then put back the Complication cards in the same position they were before shuffling.
Optional Rule for Veterans
Veteran players may want an even bigger challenge. This extremely dangerous rule is for those fearless players.
During setup, after reading the Villain information on their dashboard and Threat cards, players may choose to remove from the Complications deck any card whose effect would have little to no impact on the Villain's gameplay and performance. Then, shuffle the remaining Complication cards and proceed with the game setup as usual.
Compatibility
The Complications Challenge cannot be used in Team vs Team or Player vs Player mode.
Complications should only be used in Super Villain mode if the Hero players are considerably more experienced than the Villain player.
Locations
Harvester of Sorrow
Players may use the Harvester of Sorrow Location to increase the game difficulty. If the Harvester of Sorrow is in play, during setup, keep the 3 Charge tokens within reach of the players.
At the end of each Villain turn, place 1 Charge token on the Harvester of Sorrow Location (these tokens don't fill Thug and Civilian slots). As soon as the Location has 3 Charge tokens on it, discard them all, returning them to the common pool. Then, draw a Master Plan card and add it facedown in the Storyline.
If there are any Charge tokens in the Harvester of Sorrow, Heroes may use the Location's End of Turn effect to discard 1 Charge token from it.
Nova Corps Headquarters
If the Nova Corps Headquarters Location is in play, during setup, keep the 6 Nova Corps tokens within reach of the players.
Heroes may use the Nova Corps Headquarters End of Turn effect to place a Nova Corps token in any Location that does not already have one. If an Overflow or any effect that discards Civilians should happen in a Location with a Nova Corps token (whichever comes first), the effect must be ignored, and the Nova Corps token is discarded.
A Location can't have more than 1 Nova Corps token on it at any time.
