- Players use a one-story block as a Scoring marker and place it on the "0" of the Scoring track on the game board.
- The oldest player places the Start Player marker (the black block) in front of them and starts the game.
- Shuffle the Building cards and deal 4 cards to each player. Make a facedown pile with the remaining cards next to the board.
Important notes: Each player must play on a different side of the Game board. For two or three player games, please see play variants below.
Playing Manhattan
Manhattan is played in 4 rounds. Each round consists of 6 turns. Players perform the following actions in this order:
- At the beginning of a round, each player, after examining their cards, selects the Building blocks they will use during that round.
- In turns, in a clockwise direction, each player plays a card, places a Building block on the board, and draws another card.
- At the end of a round, when all Building blocks have been played, each player's points are counted and the Scoring markers are moved along the Scoring track to reflect the score.
1. Selecting the Building Blocks
Starting with the First Player and continuing clockwise, each player selects from their lot six Building blocks to be used during the round and places them on their own Player board. Note: Players may not change their selection of Building blocks during the round.
2A. Building Skyscrapers
Starting with the First Player and continuing clockwise, on their turn, each player plays a card from their hand and places it face-up next to their Player board. The card must be placed straight and cannot be rotated or placed on another side of the Game board.
On each Building card, a section of the grid is marked in red. This indicates on which sector of a city the player is allowed to build. The player picks one of their Building blocks from their Player board and places it on a construction site that corresponds to the marked section of their card.
Players must place their Building block on the construction site indicated by their card. The Building block can be placed in any of the six cities on the Game board.
Note: The same Building card will refer to different sectors of each city depending on which side of the Game board it is played.
After a player has placed their Building block, they draw another Building card from the face down pile. Once the Building card deck is empty, collect the played cards from all players, shuffle them, and place them face down to create a new playing deck.
2B. How to Place the Building Blocks
A player may place a Building block on top of their own skyscraper to strengthen their position.
A player may place a Building block on top of an opponent's skyscraper provided that, at the end of their turn, the player has at least as many stories (not blocks!) of their own color as the player who currently owns the top floor of the skyscraper.
Remember: Building blocks range from 1 to 4 stories.
Note: Players may only play one Building block per turn.
3. Scoring
When all players have placed all six of their Building blocks, the round ends and players tally their points according to the rules below. Each player then moves their Scoring marker on the Scoring track.
A. Tallest Building — 3 points
The player who owns the tallest building on the Game board scores 3 points. If two or more buildings are tied for first place, no player scores 3 points.
B. Most Buildings Owned in a City — 2 points per city
In each city, the player who owns the most skyscrapers wins 2 points. In a case of a tie, no player scores points in that city.
C. Individual Buildings Owned — 1 point each
Players gain 1 point for every building they own on the board, even if these buildings already gave them points according to the two other scoring methods.
Scoring example (end of a round)
A. Orange player gets 3 points for the highest building (E).
B. Yellow player gets 2 points for owning the most buildings in city (A). Purple player gets 4 points for the most buildings owned in cities (B) and (C). Blue player gets 2 points for the majority of buildings in city (D). No players get points in cities (E) and (F) since players are tied.
C. Purple player gets 9 points for owning 9 buildings; Blue player gets 6 points; Yellow player gets 5 points; Orange player gets only 1 point.
Game Ends
The game ends after the 4th round, when all Building blocks have been played. The player who has the most points wins!
If there is a tie, the player with the highest building between the tied players wins. If there is still a tie, the player who owns the most buildings wins.
2 Player Game Rules
Each player chooses 2 colors of Building blocks for the game and selects 8 Building blocks, 4 of each color, at the beginning of each round. On their turn, players can use either of the two colors they own. Scoring follows the same rules as the four-player game. The game still lasts 6 rounds. At the end of the game, players add the scores of their two colors to determine the winner.
3 Player Game Rules
The game lasts 6 rounds instead of four. Every round, each player plays 4 Building blocks instead of 6. This allows each player to be the last player in a round twice during the game.
Once the scoring has been completed and the Scoring markers are advanced accordingly, the First Player Marker block is passed clockwise to the next player and a new round starts. Note: Players keep the Construction cards they have in hand at the end of the round to start the next one.
