Components

  • 10 wooden pieces: 6 sushis (2 Ura-Makis, 2 Gunkan-Makis, 2 Hoso-Makis), 2 bottles of soy sauce, 2 wasabi bowls
  • 2 sushi mats
  • 2 blindfolds
  • 40 challenge cards

Goal of the Game

In two teams, stack your sushis as fast as possible the way the challenge card shows. Depending on the card, you must wear a blindfold or use your fingers as chopsticks. Both teams stack at the same time. The first team to complete the challenge gets the card. The first team to have 6 cards wins.

Setup

  • Form two teams and sit opposite each other at the table (with four players, 2 players each; with six, 3 players each).
  • Each team takes a set of the 5 different wooden pieces, a sushi mat and a blindfold.
  • Shuffle the challenge cards and place them as a face-down challenge pile in the middle of the table.

Challenge Types

The picture and color on the back of a challenge card show you how the challenge must be solved:

  • Blindfold (red): Each team chooses one player who puts on the blindfold and must stack the wooden pieces for this challenge. Their team must describe the challenge on the front of the card to them.
    • Super Showdown: If it gets too easy for you, you can also play so that the player with the blindfold may only use one hand.
  • Chopsticks (yellow): Two players of each team must stack the wooden pieces together, but may only use one finger each. In teams of two, both team members may look at the card. In teams of three, the third player describes the challenge on the front of the card.

Before the game, decide on one of these two variants:

  • Normal chopsticks: You may only use your index fingers to stack the wooden pieces.
  • Mini chopsticks: You may only use your little fingers to stack the wooden pieces.

Note: The two players who describe the challenge may not touch the wooden pieces. They also may not show the card to the stacking players.

Playing the Game

  • Before each round, make sure everyone knows which challenge type the next card calls for. For a red challenge, put on the blindfold!
  • Then reveal the top card of the challenge pile; it applies to both teams. When playing with six, only the describing players may see the card.
  • When all players are ready, give a starting signal. Now start stacking!
  • Important: Pay attention to every detail! Is the stack standing on the sushi mat? Is the soy sauce upside down?
  • If your stack falls over, start again from the beginning, until one team has solved the challenge.

The team that solves the challenge first shouts "Maki Stack!" out loud and gets the challenge card.

End of the Game

The first team to have 6 cards wins.

For Maki Masters

Regardless of the card back, you always play as follows:

  • Teams of two: Both players stack with one finger each. One of them stacks blind, while the other describes the challenge at the same time.
  • Teams of three: Two players stack with one finger each. One of the two stacks blind. The third player describes the challenge.
