A játék célja (Goal of the Game)
Players try to collect as many points as possible by laying down rows and identical positive cards, while trying to get rid of the purple negative cards in time, which they are sometimes forced to lay down in front of themselves. The action cards offer excellent opportunities for tactics in the advanced variant.
The player who collects the most points by the end wins the game.
A játék tartozékai (Components)
120 cards:
- 20 × "1"
- 15 × "2"
- 9 × "3"
- 5 × "4"
- 30 × purple negative card
- 4 × Pinkó card
- 3 × Midnight card (Éjfél kártya)
- 34 × action card (for the advanced game)
A játék előkészítése (Setup)
If playing the starter variant, return the action cards to the box. Set aside the 3 Midnight cards. Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player. Split the remaining cards into 3 roughly equal-sized piles, shuffle 1 Midnight card face down into each pile, and then stack the piles on top of each other to form a single draw pile. Do not shuffle this draw pile again during the game.
Translator's note: the Hungarian sheet places the starter-variant condition on the first sentence only; the remaining setup steps are printed in the same paragraph and are transcribed as printed.
A játék menete (Gameplay)
Players take turns in clockwise order, starting with the youngest player.
On their turn, the active player may choose one of the following 3 actions (passing is not allowed):
- Draw a card
- Lay down a combination
- Discard a card
Laphúzás (Draw a card)
Draw one card from the draw pile. A player may hold at most 8 cards, so this action may only be chosen if the player holds fewer than 8 cards.
If a Midnight card is drawn at any time during the game, it must be carried out immediately as an event (see Éjfél kártya below).
Laplerakás (Lay down a combination)
Lay down from your hand, in front of yourself, one combination from the following options. These cards remain in front of you until the end of the game:
- Group (Csoport): two or more completely identical positive (+) cards.
- Row (Sor): a row of at least 3 positive cards.
- A single +4 card: one card with value +4 on its own.
Pinkó (joker card): A joker that can replace any of the +1, +2 or +3 cards when laying down a group or a row, but the +4 only in a row. It cannot be laid down alone or as a pair next to a +4. Only one Pinkó may appear in a single laying down. At the end of the game, the value of the card it replaces counts toward the total score.
Lapdobás (Discard)
Discard any card from your hand, placing it face up on the common discard pile.
Extra akció (Extra action)
Players may perform the following at any time, even outside their own turn:
- Discard matching cards: discard one or more cards from their hands if the picture on them matches the picture on the card on top of the discard pile.
- Add to a group: add another identical card to a group they already have laid down. A row cannot be extended in this way.
Éjfél kártya (Midnight card)
When a player draws a Midnight card, they must immediately place it on the discard pile. Then every player shows the cards they hold, and every negative (purple) card must be laid down in front of its owner. These remain there until the end of the game and reduce the player's total score.
Tip: set the used Midnight card aside, so that it does not get mixed in with the other cards before the next game.
A játék vége (End of the game)
Players take turns in order until the draw pile runs out. When a player draws the last card, the final round begins. The game is ended by the player who previously drew the last card. Then every player shows the cards they hold, must lay down every purple card in front of themselves (as with a Midnight card), and discards the remaining cards.
A játék végi értékelés (Final scoring)
Each player adds up the positive and negative values of the cards laid down in front of them. Pinkó is worth the value of the card it replaces, so take care not to mix up the cards!
The player who has collected the most points wins. In case of a tie, the player who laid down more cards wins.
Scoring example as printed:
- 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4 points
- 3 + Pinkó (+3) = 6 points
- 2 + 3 + 4 = 9 points
- −1 − 3 = −4 points
- Total: 4 + 6 + 9 − 4 = 15 points
Haladó szabály (Advanced Rules)
On each turn, the actions a player may choose are the same as in the basic rules, with the following additions.
Lapdobás (Discard) — advanced options
When discarding, the player may choose one of the following options:
- Discard one card from your hand.
- Discard several identical cards.
- Discard a complete or incomplete negative row, in which one card may be replaced by any positive card or action card.
Discarded cards are placed face up on top of the discard pile. If a player has discarded at least 3 cards, they may immediately draw one card from the draw pile.
Akciólap kijátszása (Playing an action card)
A player plays an action card from their hand, places it on top of the discard pile, and carries out the action on it.
The 8-card hand limit must always be observed; no one may receive more cards. How many cards each player holds is always public information.
Akciólapok leírása (Action card descriptions)
Shield (Pajzs): Protects against opponents' actions, but is not played on your own turn. When you are chosen as the target of an action, or when an action affects everyone, you may discard the Shield from your hand, so that the action has no effect on you. A Shield cannot be used against the effect of a Midnight card. Note: it is not mandatory to use it, but it must be played before the action is carried out; it is too late to play it afterwards (for example, when a good card is already about to be taken from you).
Village (Falu): When played, place it in front of yourself and lay one of your cards face down on it. This card does not count toward the 8-card limit. During your turn you may use this card exactly as if it were in your hand, but other players' actions and the Midnight card have no effect on it. When the card on the Village is played or discarded, a new card may immediately be placed there, or the card on it may be exchanged for another card from your hand. At the end of the game, the card on the Village must be taken back into your hand.
Crystal Ball (Varázsgömb): When played, you may look at another player's cards, and then immediately play one more action card. While doing so, you may not lay down a positive card or discard a negative card.
Draw cards (Húzz lapot): When played, draw cards one at a time, up to as many as the card indicates, or until you reach the 8-card hand limit. If a Midnight card is drawn meanwhile, it must be played immediately, and then drawing continues.
Make a player discard (Dobass el lapot): Choose another player. Randomly draw from their hand up to as many cards as the card indicates, and discard them onto the discard pile.
Take 2 cards (Húzz el 2 lapot): Choose another player. You may randomly draw up to 2 cards from their hand, and take them into your hand.
Pass 2 cards (Adj át 2 lapot): Choose up to 2 cards from your hand and give them to another player. If this would give that player more than 8 cards, no more cards may be given to them.
Lay down purple cards (Lila lapok lerakatása): A chosen player must show their cards, and must lay down every negative (purple) card in front of themselves.
Actions affecting all opponents (Minden ellenfélre vonatkozó akciólapok): Affects every player who does not defend against it with a Shield.
Az új lapok bemutatása (The 5th Edition's New Cards)
Translated from the publisher's separate sheet "Az új lapok bemutatása" (KékJáték, 5th edition, supplementary cards). Its introduction reads: the 5th edition of Magyar népmesék - A kártyajáték includes 10 unique special cards, of which previously only one could be obtained by those who were alert enough. These cards are not part of the standard game, so their abilities are presented separately.
Chipped Mug (Csorba bögre): This card always has a value of zero, but can be used as a Pinkó joker. It can therefore complete any otherwise legal pair, group or row. At the end of the game it is very useful for laying down positive cards still held in hand for points.
Holed Satchel (Lyukas tarisznya): This card has a dual nature, as it can be positive and negative at once. If laid down as a +1 in a pair, group or row, it is worth +1 at the end of the game. If it remains in your hand at the end of the game, and must be shown due to a Midnight card, or is made to be laid down by another player's action card, it is counted as −1. Its value therefore depends on playing it at the right time.
Black Sheep (Fekete bárány): Has the same properties as the Holed Satchel, but its value is +/−2.
Rusty Key (Rozsdás kulcs): Has the same properties as the Black Sheep and the Holed Satchel, with a value of +/−3.
Palace Revolving on Duck's Legs (Kacsalábon forgó palota): The most valuable card in the deck, worth +5, and there is only one. It has a very important restriction: it can only be laid down as part of a row, meaning after at least one +3 and one +4 card (one of which may be replaced by Pinkó), though it may also be placed in a complete row: +1, +2, +3, +4 and +5. If you manage to make this complete row without using Pinkó, its total is not 15 points but, for its special nature, is rewarded with +5 points, for a total of 20 points.
Lantern (Lámpás): If you have it, the effect of the Midnight card does not apply: you do not need to show your other cards to the other players, and you do not need to lay down your purple cards if you hold it. At the end of the game this effect no longer applies, and at that point you must lay down your purple cards.
Magic Mirror (Varázstükör): A reaction card, like the Shield. If someone plays an action card against you, the Mirror reflects its effect back onto the player who played it. For example, if they wanted to take 2 cards from you, you take 2 cards from them instead. The effect of the Magic Mirror can be neutralised with the Shield.
Take back a card (Visszavehetsz egy lapot a lent lévők közül): With this card you may take back any card in front of you, whether positive or negative. The 8-card hand limit must still be observed, but the card taken back can be used in any way later.
Hussar (Huszár): Its job is to thrash the bad creatures. So if, in exchange for an action, you place it on one of your −1 or −2 cards in front of you, that card is changed to +1 or +2 respectively, with the same magnitude.
Lazy Girl (Rest lány): This card appeared in earlier editions too, but now has a new function. If we must show a Midnight card, a Crystal Ball, or lay down purple cards due to an action card, we miss one turn. Otherwise the card has a value of −2, but it only has to be laid in front of us at the end of the game; before then only the skipping effect applies. You can get rid of it if someone draws it or it is passed to another player, but it is only permanently removed if it is placed on a Village and left there.
Translator's note: the closing flavour sentence of the Lazy Girl entry is omitted as flavour text.
Translator's note: the publisher's footer tagline ("A minőségi játékélmény") and logo are branding and are omitted.
